THE Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) successfully thwarted a suicide attempt by a 36-year local man who is reportedly unharmed and currently receiving medical attention.
The Wednesday afternoon incident comes following a shocking string of suicide cases in February that claimed the lives of three, including a young local girl and two foreigners.
During a press conference held late Wednesday evening at the Central Police Station in the capital, DSP Handrie bin Amin, Assistant Commanding Officer of Tutong Police District cum Criminal Investigation Officer of the Tutong Police District shared that in the latest incident, the Tutong Police Station received a call at about 1.20pm and responded to reports of the man, a permanent resident, who was attempting to take his life with a knife at Kampong Keramut in the Tutong District.
At the scene, personnel from the Tutong Police Station, led by Chief Inspector Shamsul Nahar bin Idris, Commanding Officer of Tutong Police Station, calmed the man down and snatched the knife from him.
The man, who did not sustain any injuries, was rushed to the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital in the capital for medical attention.
Police investigations revealed that the man was laden with family problems, which led him to commit the act.
The police reminded the public that suicide attempts are considered a crime in the country and said the case is being investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22 and the offence carries imprisonment and fine.
In light of the string of suicide cases in the country recently, the police advised the public to immediately report and seek help from authorities if they sense any unusual behaviour among family members or people around them, such as prolonged silence or agitation.
The public should also report such incidents to the police immediately to seek help.
