THE Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) held a dialogue session with prosecutors from law enforcement agencies and statutory bodies at the Golden Jubilee Hall of the Law and Courts Building yesterday.
The session was held specifically for officers of law enforcement agencies and statutory bodies who do prosecutions on behalf of the public prosecutor with the following objectives: To reiterate the importance of their roles in the criminal justice system; enhance the existing working relationship between the Criminal Justice Division and other law enforcement agencies and statutory bodies; and provide a platform for prosecutors from law enforcement agencies and statutory bodies to exchange views, concerns, challenges and best practices in order for them to efficiently discharge their duties as prosecutors appointed by the public prosecutor.
The dialogue was attended by representatives from the Department of Immigration and National Registration, Narcotics Control Bureau, Royal Customs and Excise Department, Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), Department of Labour, and the Employees Trust Fund (TAP).
The Attorney General, Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati binti Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd Salleh, emphasised that while prosecutors face various challenges such as the handling and presentation of evidence and handling of witnesses, they must always strive to uphold the integrity of being a prosecutor and to provide the highest quality legal services for His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Government.
The Attorney General expressed her appreciation for the ongoing efforts of all prosecuting officers in upholding justice in the criminal justice system in Brunei Darussalam through unwavering commitment, dedication, honesty, integrity and professionalism.
Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati also reiterated that these qualities fall in line with His Majesty’s titah during the 24th Civil Service Day in which he stated that “good public servants are those who serve honestly and sincerely”.
As part of the dialogue, senior deputy public prosecutors of the AGC and senior magistrates from the Subordinate Courts also shared their views and opinions on best practices for the efficient and effective conducting of prosecutions.
The dialogue – the first of its kind in the country – was organised as part of the Criminal Justice Division’s ongoing efforts to increase the standards of efficiency and effectiveness of prosecutions in Brunei Darussalam as well as to further strengthen the cooperation among deputy public prosecutors in the AGC and their law enforcement counterparts, in fulfilment of the AGC’s vision of being the highest-quality legal service provider for His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and His Majesty’s Government.
