TWO Bruneians recently completed a five-day trek across the Patagonia trail between Chile and Argentina, as part of a move to commemorate the 34th National Day of Brunei Darussalam.
Avid trekkers Pengiran Nor Ikhsan binti Pengiran Jaya Indera Pengiran Haji Mokhtar Puteh and Pengiran Khashiem bin Pengiran Hassan were part of a 14-member group that included nationals from the United States, China, Hong Kong and Germany.
The group began their expedition on March 12, braving strong winter winds from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and travelling across locations that included the W Classis Trail in Chile, Base de las Torres, Los Cuernos, Valle del Frances, Refugio Paire Grande and Refugio Grey. The group crossed the Patagonia trail in Argentina to visit the Perito Moreno glacier and enjoyed the view of Mount Fitz Roy from the scenic Mirador de Condor.
“The Patagonia trek isn’t for the weak-hearted. Trekkers need to have a strong physical and mental aptitude to attempt the feat, especially in the winter where winds can climb up to 110 km/h and there are no viable shelters in the open area,” Pengiran Nor Ikhsan binti Pengiran Jaya Indera Pengiran Haji Mokhtar Puteh said.
“To prepare ourselves, we embarked on numerous physical activities and trekked Mount Kinabalu to accustom ourselves with the climb,” he added.
Meanwhile, Pengiran Khashiem shared that they hope to conduct other similar treks down the road, including expeditions to the Inca Trail in Peru and the Mount Blanc in France.
