One hundred cyclists recently participated in a ‘Night Safety Ride’ at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium to raise greater awareness on safety for cyclists.
On hand to sound off the event was Senior Superintendent Haji Mohammad Hassan bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Ahmad, the Acting Director of the Traffic Control and Investigation Department (JSKLL), cum Acting Director of Finance and Administration of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF).
Chief Inspector Md Ismail bin Abdullah led the participants during the two-and-a-half-hour ride from the national stadium to Jerudong Park and the Waterfront, which was organised by the RBPF Sports Council.
Speaking to the Bulletin, Chief Inspector Md Ismail said, “The aim is to promote cycling safety, especially at night. With cycling gaining popularity among the locals, we have come to realise that some cyclists are not equipped with proper safety gear, such as reflective vests and reflectors at the front and rear of their bicycles.”
Chief Inspector Md Ismail, who is also the deputy manager of the RBPF cycling team, had a message for motorists, “We hope they practice more vigilance and awareness for other people using the same road for riding and running.”
He expressed hope the Night Safety Ride would go on to become an annual event in an ongoing effort to promote cyclists safety.
At the same event, a police officer from the Traffic Control and Investigation Department delivered a safety briefing to all the participating cyclists.
