BRUNEIANS are the fifth largest contributors to the number of foreign tourist arrivals to Malaysia for the past five years. In 2017, 1.66 million tourists from Brunei travelled to Malaysia, the highest figure since Tourism Malaysia opened its office in Brunei Darussalam in 2003.

In 2016, 1.4 million visitors from Brunei travelled to Malaysia while in 2015, 1.13 million from the Sultanate visited the country.

The figures were shared by the Director of Tourism Malaysia (TM) in Brunei, Haji Ibrahim Seddiqi bin Talib, in his welcoming remarks during the launch of the Malaysia Special Package in conjunction with the Malaysia National Sales Campaign.

“Shopping in Malaysia has always been the number one choice for Bruneian tourists. Tourism Malaysia is grateful for the continuous support extended by our local agents throughout these years and we look forward to welcoming Bruneian shoppers to Malaysia,” he said.

“Tourism Malaysia in Brunei has initiated a joint collaboration with five travel agents in the country to develop the Malaysia Special Package. The initiative is to support the Malaysia National Sales Campaign 2018 which includes the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival from May 15 to July 31, and Malaysia Year End Sale from November 1 to December 31.”

The Malaysia National Sales Campaign holiday packages were launched by the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam, Datuk Ghulam Jelani bin Khanizaman, along with the Director of Tourism Malaysia in Brunei and representatives from travel agents including Anthony Tours and Travel Agency Sdn Bhd, Century Travel Centre Sdn Bhd, Freme Travel Services Sdn Bhd, Pan Bright Travel Service and At-Taqwa Travel Tours Sdn Bhd.

Present at the launch were Alias Suut, Area Manager, Sarawak and Brunei, Malaysia Airlines Berhad; Lim Guat Wen, Country Manager, Brunei, Royal Brunei Airlines; and Cindy Choi, Station Manager of AirAsia.

Malaysia’s shopping branding is centred on the ‘Experiential Shopping’ concept that promotes Malaysia as a fun shopping destination, complemented by entertainment and recreation activities, gastronomic adventures, luxury treatment and visits to popular spots.

It is made possible by the support of over 500 integrated shopping malls and retail outlets in the country whose numbers are increasing every year.

New retail and lifestyles hubs coming up in the country include the KL Gateway Mall in Kuala Lumpur and Genting premium outlets in Genting Highland, which will further stimulate Malaysia’s shopping scene.
