Royalty graces swimming meet

HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Deputy Sultan and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman yesterday attended the first day of the 26th Brunei Age Group Swimming Championships at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex Swimming Pool.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, who swam under the banner of ISB Hammerheads, sets a new personal best in the 100m freestyle after clocking a time of 1:24.73, lowering his old mark of 1:26.67 in the process.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muneerah Madhul Bolkiah binti Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah continued her fine form in the national scene after bagging first place in the 50m breaststroke with an unbeatable time of 1:12.59.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim also competed in the 100m breaststroke where he recorded a time of 56s.

Also present was Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda Muhammad Aiman ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.

Organised by the Brunei Amateur Swimming Association (BASA), the event attracted 1,339 individuals and 33 relay teams competing in 17 swimming events and three relay events respectively.

Six local teams and seven overseas teams are competing in the event with the local teams represented by Brunei Speed Swimming Club, Dolphin Swimming Club, ISB Hammerheads, Jerudong Swimming Club, Panaga Stingrays and Royal Brunei Recreational Club.

The overseas teams comprised Aqua Flippers Philippines, Gymkhana Club Miri, Miri Amateur Swimming Association, Kelab Rekreasi Petroleum, Miri, Power Aquatic Swimming Club, Kuching, The British School in Colombo, Sri Lanka and Victoria Swimming Club, Labuan.

The meet serves as a qualifying platform for BASA to select swimmers for the upcoming 42nd Southeast Asia Age Group (SEAAG) Championships in the Philippines from July 6-8 and the 10th ASEAN School Games in Malaysia from July 19-27.

BASA is expecting new national and age group records during the three days of competition.
