THE Tutong District New Converts Association (PESATU) is set to reach a new milestone with the construction of its own multi-purpose hall, following the signing of an agreement for assistance with the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) yesterday at the PESATU building in Kampong Lubok Pulau.

The agreement, which will see PESATU receiving financial assistance to build the hall from MUIB, was witnessed by Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and a member of MUIB, as a representative of Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs and Vice President of MUIB.

PESATU was established on December 5, 1982 and has been under the wing of the Islamic Da’wah Centre since the centre’s establishment in 1985.

It was created as a body or agency to assist in the development of new converts on matters of this world and the thereafter, and to function as an intermediary to work closely with the Islamic Da’wah Centre.

Its mission is to improve the lives of new converts with regard to their practice and knowledge of the Islamic faith, as well as to strengthen relations among Muslims and to help develop or improve the socio-economic well-being of its members.

Other objectives include creating solidarity between Muslim converts nationwide, assisting and encouraging new converts to learn or deepen their knowledge of Islamic teachings, and strengthening faith among new converts.

At present, PESATU has one building in Kampong Lubok Pulau, Tutong, which was first used in 1996.

Among the activities were guidance classes, Al-Quran reading classes, Sunnat Tarawikh prayers and Tedarus ceremonies, as well as Khatam Al-Quran ceremonies organised during the holy month of Ramadhan and other occasions.

To cater to the increasing number of Muslim converts in the country – particularly in the Tutong District – PESATU has applied for the construction of additional buildings to run its religious activities.

The association’s agreement with MUIB will partly finance the construction of its new multipurpose hall.

The signing ceremony yesterday began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah. This was followed by speeches by the Acting Director of the Islamic Da’wah Centre, Haji Abdul Rajid bin Haji Mohd Salleh and President of PESATU Haji Hasbie Azrol bin Abdullah Liat.

The agreement was signed by Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Akop, Acting Secretary of MUIB and PESATU President in the presence of Haji Adnan bin Haji Adam, the Acting Tutong District Officer, and Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar, Acting Ra’es of KUPU SB.

Also present at the event were Legislative Council members YB Haji Umarali bin Esung, YB Haji Abdul Wahab bin Apong, and YB Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit.
