THE Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) organised the National Seminar on Awareness Building on Digital Copyright and Related Rights: ‘Tapping on the New Techs and Apps: Opportunities and Challenges’ at the Golden Jubilee Hall of the Law and Courts Building yesterday.
According to a press release by the Attorney General’s Chambers, the seminar aimed to increase awareness on the recent development and enforcement of digital copyright and related rights in Brunei Darussalam, and the challenges faced by local creators in protecting their copyrighted works, with regards to online publishing and social media.
The seminar included presentations of experiences from local creators, enforcement in Brunei Darussalam, the meaning and effect of moral rights and developments in copyright and related rights.
The Seminar also heard from a World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) representative on recent developments in international protection of copyright and related rights.
The press release noted that the Assistant Solicitor General, Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Md Taib in her welcoming address acknowledged Brunei Darussalam’s recent membership to the WIPO Copyright Treaty and WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty in 2017 – also commonly known as the Internet Treaties.
She said that the increase in the use of social media by the public, particularly entrepreneurs, aspiring artists, agencies and journalists has given rise to the need to extend the promotion and protection of the copyright and related rights in this digital era.
This new development in the dissemination of works via the Internet or any other form of digital media raises new questions concerning copyright and related rights, especially issues related to the enforcement of those rights.
The seminar concluded with a roundtable discussion on the practical experience of digital copyright and related rights by copyright owners in Brunei Darussalam.
