A TOTAL of 102 Imams yesterday were appointed to lead the Sunnat Tarawikh prayer in 62 mosques, suraus and religious halls in Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Belait districts.
The Imams, who were appointed during a ceremony at the Multipurpose Hall, Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, Kiarong, comprise students, lecturers as well as former students of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB) and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).
Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Haji Mohd Serudin bin Haji Timbang presented the letters of appointment.
Acting Director of Mosque Affairs Pengiran Haji Haslin bin Pengiran Haji Ali said the annual appointment of Imams to lead Sunnat Tarawikh prayers has been conducted since 2006.
“The Imams will lead the prayer on the first night of Ramadhan,” he said. “The allocation of Imam aims to serve as medium of exposure for them to lead and enhance their confidence.
“This will provide a platform to enhance their memorising skills. It seeks to attract more congregants to the mosque during Ramadhan to perform Sunnat Tarawikh prayer,” he added.
Head of Guidance and Training Section of the Mosque Affairs Department Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Mohd Noor and a teacher from ITQSHHB Ustaz Ubaidillah bin Haji Abdul Mughni briefed the Imams before their appointment on the Kaifiyat (methods) of Sunnat Tarawikh prayer.
Twelve ITQSHHB lecturers, assigned to supervise the appointed Imams, also received letters of appointment.
