THE Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) launched the Gerai Ramadhan 2018, in a ceremony held at the parking lot on Jalan Bendahara in the capital yesterday.
The ceremony also coincided with the launching of the ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ initiative.
Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary at the MoHA Shamsul Bahrin bin Haji Mohd Hussain launched the facility in his capacity as the guest of honour.
In his welcoming remarks, Chairman of the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board Haji Ali bin Matyassin said 53 plots have been provided to set up stalls, of which 49 are for take-away and four are for barbecue sections.
“The stalls are a platform for youth in the country to venture into the field of business and earn an income during the month of Ramadhan,” he noted.
Starting this year, stalls at Gerai Ramadhan will carry out the ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ initiative during the weekend in support of the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation’s (JASTRe) campaign, he added.
“Vendors and members of the public are urged to support the campaign and inculcate the culture of recycling. We will also provide a booth selling recycled bags to encourage the public to support the campaign. To implement the government’s initiative holistically, support of non-governmental organisations, volunteer groups, private companies as well as youth in the country are needed.
“Responsibility in keeping our country clean must be shouldered by all. If any individual or company is found dumping trash at public places, fines will be imposed,” he said.
“From January to May 2018, the BSB Municipal Department has issued 110 compounds to 73 individuals and 37 companies under Chapter 30, Section 12 of the Minor Offences Act. The total compound issued amounted to BND16,800,” Haji Ali said. After the launching, the guest of honour distributed recycled bags to members of the public and toured the Gerai Ramadhan stalls.
