AS PART of Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd’s (BSP) commitment in educating the public on Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), the ‘Generate Graduate Network’ has established School HSSE clubs in Kuala Belait.

Starting with two schools, Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School (SMPJN) and Sayyidina Ali Secondary School (SMSA), the clubs aim to serve as a platform for students and teachers to have a voice and a sense of responsibility towards their school and their colleagues, said Safwan Idris, the School HSSE Team Lead.

“When I was studying in the SMSA, I did not know what else I can do for my school besides studying and performing, so we at BSP proposed this Generate Graduate Network project as a way for students and teachers to contribute more to the school,” added Safwan, who is also a graduate materials and corrosion engineer in the young professionals’ network.

He further explained that with the establishment of the clubs, the students will be given the tools to focus on the practice of identifying risks, intervening in unsafe conditions and discussing mitigations to ensure a safe environment.

“This will make the school a safer place and the students and teachers will become more aware of hazards which may be present in the school’s vicinity.”

The BTEC Level 1 and BTEC Level 2 Diploma students who attended the inauguration in SMSA were briefed on HSSE and were given exercises on how to spot hazards.

Safwan explained to the Bulletin that it is the students’ and the teachers’ responsibility to identify the risks and their committee will document each risk entry based on the proactive intervention exercise (PIE) tool which follows ‘What could go wrong?’, ‘What could cause it to go wrong?’ and ‘What can be done to control it?’.

“We record the entry based on open discussion surrounding questions that come with the PIE tool,” added Safwan.

After completing their first in-class session, the students and teachers along with members of the HSSE Club Committee moved forward to an outdoor session of the activity where they identified some risks that were discussed upon return to the classroom.

One of the teams found water puddles in the vicinity of the school caused by rain, and the issue was raised in the discussion as a problem that may cause injury to passers-by.

The students who found the puddle suggested that it be cleaned to avoid any unwanted incidents.

When asked how the School HSSE Committee will follow up on their progress the graduate engineer informed that each school will receive three progress checks throughout the year.

“An award ceremony will also be held to reward the schools that have achieved the best overall HSSE performance,” he added, explaining that this will also be useful for the students’ future career as it will not be something new for them if they are employed in the oil and gas industry.

Also present to officiate the inauguration of the club was Salawati Kassim, Head of Technical and Process Safety at BSP.

A similar event was also held to establish the HSSE Club at SMPJN.
