DRESSMAKERS are experiencing mixed fortunes this year as they work hard to finish orders for Baju Cara Melayu and Baju Kurung before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Some shops have reached their targets for orders but others have received fewer orders than last year.

One of the employees at a tailor shop in Kampong Delima, Berakas said they received orders for more than 700 pieces last year but only about 200 this year.

The dressmaker at a shop next door said they received orders for 1,000 pieces three months before the fasting month last year.

“This year, we have only received orders for about 800 pieces but we are still thankful as we expect more orders from our regular customers,” he said.

However, it’s business as usual for other dressmakers.

“We are seeing a lot of stylish Baju Kurungs this year and the use of a lot of materials such as batik and lace,” said a dressmaker from Kamar Aswanzy that has reached their order target.

Hajah Hidayati, Manager of Hayaa Musfirah boutique in Kampong Kiarong said the shop has seen good business this year since it first opened less than a year ago.

She said the boutique has stopped accepting orders for HarI Raya attire.

She said that chiffon accompanied by lace are the popular fabrics used for making the festive clothes.

“Orders started coming in the first quarter of Ramadhan and we still have customers coming in to make orders. We hope to get more tailors so we can accept more orders next year,” she said.
