THE Bandar Seri Begawan Indian Association (BSBIA) held a cultural gathering last night at Wafa Hotel and Apartment as part of celebrations marking the 72nd Independence Day of India.
Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Nagma Mohamed Mallick was the guest of honour.
The national anthem of Brunei Darussalam and India were played prior to the event.
The event began with welcoming speeches from 2017 Indian Independence Day Celebrations Committee Chairman NM Mubarak and a felicitation by BSBIA President Ravichandran.
This was followed by the guest of honour delivering a speech in which she talked in length on the contributions of Mahatma Ghandi, calling him the great son of the soil (India).
The evening was attended by over 400 members of the Indian community of Bandar Seri Begawan and their families.
Among the highlights during the event was the presentation of awards to high achieving students within the Indian community.
Cultural, classical and folk dances and songs further enlivened the event.
