Water sports add colour to National Youth Day event

CROWDS flocked to the Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas in the capital yesterday to watch the Youth Water Sports 2018 competition – part of activities held to mark the country’s 13th National Youth Day celebration.

The event, held to strengthen the ties among youth and encourage them to get involved in sports and healthy activities, was attended by the guest of honour Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, who later presented prizes to the competition winners.

Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) together with GHK Motors Sdn Bhd as strategic partner, the competition saw 11 teams competing in a number of water sports categories: kayak, tug-of-war boat race, fibreglass boat race, and labi-labi boat race.

The kayak race was divided into four categories: Men’s 500m T1 Single, Women’s 500m T1 Single, Men’s 500m T2 Double, and Women’s 500m T2 Double.

The fibreglass boat race was divided into four categories: Women’s 500m six Rowers, Men’s 500m 10 Rowers, Men’s 500m 15 Rowers, and Men’s 500m Relay for 20 Rowers (10×2).

Meanwhile in the tug-of-war boat race, the categories were Men’s team of three, Women’s team of three and Women’s team of 10, while for the labi-labi boat race, two categories were contested in: Single and Double.
