HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Inspector General of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), yesterday attended the opening ceremony of the 38th ASEAN National Police (ASEANAPOL) Conference, at the International Convention Centre.
Also gracing the opening ceremony was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Deputy Inspector General of the RBPF.
In his speech, the Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Mohd Jammy bin Haji Muhd Shah Al-Islam reaffirmed the ASEANAPOL members’ commitment towards promoting stability in the region by supporting the initiatives of the ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint, and addressing areas of crime which include terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking and cybercrime.
He said that the theme of the 38th ASEANAPOL Conference – ‘Coherence as One, Facing Challenges’ – was inspired by His Majesty’s ASEAN Day message: “ASEAN will continue to enhance cooperation with its regional and international partners, to ensure peace, security and prosperity in Southeast Asia and the wider region”.
The RBPF Commissioner also stated, “The implementation of our Joint Communique on common crime areas and issues shared by all 10 of us – the ASEANAPOL Communicational and Co-ordination Protocol for Crisis Management (ACCPCM) that was signed in 2016, and the electronic – ASEANAPOL Database System 2.0, known as e-ADS, which was launched last year in Singapore – are existing mechanisms in place that enhance our regional cooperation through the sharing of information, capacity and capability-building; and the employment of various avenues that have been agreed upon in our Joint Communique.
“In the international context, the importance and relevancy of ASEANAPOL today can be seen from the growing numbers of dialogue partners and observers; and the increasing interest from other regional and international organisations from both government and non-government sectors.
“This proves that although ASEANAPOL is primarily a regional partnership, it also plays a major part in the global fight against crime.”
