THE Sungai Liang Fire Station is urging the public not to use the Lumut-Telisai Highway, following a fiery incident yesterday at the Lumut end, involving a saloon car.
In an interview with the Bulletin, the Commander of the Sungai Liang Fire Station, Muhammad Ali bin Hassan, confirmed that they received an emergency call at 12.16am yesterday, about a car which had burst in flames, and immediately deployed two fire engines led by DSO Erang anak Japang to the scene.
The driver of the vehicle and the passenger, both local men aged 51 and 20, escaped the incident unhurt, and the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes.
The vehicle was said to be travelling from Telisai and was attempting to exit the highway to Lumut, when it collided with the metal barricades which had been put in place to separate the uncompleted Lumut-Telisai Highway and the Seria-Lumut Bypass.
A preliminary investigation into the incident revealed that the fire was caused by the high-impact collision between the metal barricade and some flammable materials.
Muhammad Ali said that all road users should obey the displayed road signs, for the sake of their own safety
“The [car driver] should not have used the highway, since it is not safe enough for public use, and that’s why it is barricaded,” he said, adding that there was also the likelihood that the car’s engine battery could have been the source of the fire.
Also present at the scene to control the flow of traffic, was the Mukim Liang Neighbourhood Watch, which was on patrol with the Sungai Liang Police Station, after making their rounds at Jalan Pantai Sungai Liang, Kampong Sungai Bakong, Kampong Sungai Taring, RPN Kampong Lumut and the vicinity of the Liang-Badas Bypass.
