THE Islamic Da’wah Centre (PDI) recently conducted a rice-planting session on a plot of land belonging to Muhammad Abas bin Abdullah Aping, a member of the Muslim convert community in Kampong Bukit, Tutong District.
The session involved around 50 people comprising officers and staff members from the PDI branch in Tutong District, as well as the Muslim converts of Kampong Bukit.
Director of the Islamic Da’wah Centre Haji Abdul Rajid bin Haji Mohd Salleh told the Weekend Bulletin that the project is particularly aimed at boosting the farming capabilities and socio-economic standing of the Muslim convert community in rural Tutong.
Penghulu of Mukim Ukong Haji Umar bin Abdul Aziz, meanwhile, said that rice cultivation is a worthwhile enterprise, in accordance with the titah of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam during the opening of the 14th Legislative Council Meeting. “It is time for our country to be self-sufficient in its food needs, especially in the areas related to staple foods,” His Majesty had said in the titah.
“In general, farming is a praiseworthy and honourable activity; and a good opportunity for the local Muslim converts in rural areas to turn their vast plots of land into rice cultivation projects,” said Haji Umar.
