HEAD of the Religious School Division at the Islamic Studies Department of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Ustazah Hajah Sinega binti Haji Swadi yesterday launched a special learning room for special needs students of Pengiran Anak Puteri Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah Religious School in Kampong Kupang, Tutong.
In an interview, a teacher shared that there are five special needs students enrolled from Primary 1 to 5. The students are diagnosed with Down syndrome, autism and speech delay.
“It can be challenging at time as it takes more efforts to introduce important figures of Islam such as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to the special needs students. Sometimes we need to make use of the English Language in explanation and there will be time they forget what they have learnt previously. For students with autism, the key to learning is repetition and routine,” he said.
According to Acting Head Teacher of Special Religious Education Unit in Tutong Faizal bin Ramli, the learning room is an initiative of the Special Religious Education Unit in providing a learning environment that is conducive for special needs students, where they will be able to enjoy the learning environment that is more comprehensive and takes various physical elements into consideration such as lighting, safety, noise, arrangement of furniture as well as other tools.
