A DELEGATION comprising 11 Legislative Council (LegCo) members made a working visit to the Mail Processing Centre (MPC) Berakas, Department of Postal Services yesterday in preparation for their get-together session with the Ministry of Communications next month.

The visit was for the members to familiarise themselves with the operations carried out at the MPC and services offered to the public by the Department of Postal Services, as well as steps taken to improve these services.

Upon arrival, the delegation was given a safety briefing and welcomed by Acting Postmaster General Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim before proceeding to the Express Mail Service (EMS) package processing section, where they were given an operations briefing by postal officer Md Ali bin Haji Momin.

They then went on to view the mail sorting section, receiving bay and X-ray RCED section. The group was briefed on the types of mails processed, such as letters, registered items, small parcels, packages, and commercial mails, as well as the EMS and EMS Speedpost.

They were also briefed on the agencies involved in organising and processing mails, such as the Royal Customs and Excise Department, the section responsible for deciding which postal items can be delivered directly (green label) and which ones need to go through inspections by the country’s enforcement agencies, such as controlled and taxable items (red label).

The LegCo delegation was also briefed on the BruTRACK – an application system for the tracking of postal items introduced in January this year.

The visitors were then taken to the Print and Post Operation section, a private-public partnership (PPP) project between the Department of Postal Services and a local company.

The section was introduced with the goal of raising the mail volume particularly letters and corporate company bills.

The delegation next stopped by the Government Mail Collection Centre, responsible for the exchange of letters between ministries and government departments, before visiting the Customer Services Care (CSC) centre.

This customer service counter came about as a result of the department’s desire to provide more customer-friendly services; where customers are able to make inquiries or complaints via communication channels.

The visitors were introduced to the department’s QPintar QueUp System, a recently introduced pilot project aimed at improving customer service quality throughout the nation’s postal services.

They went on to view a mini philatelic exhibition, which showcases equipment that have been used by the postal services, postal uniforms from the yesteryears to the present day, the history of Brunei stamps as well as a stamp collection, including first-day covers and mini sheets issued by the department.
