AHMAD Izzat Ahsanuddin bin Sofian secured Brunei Darussalam’s third taekwondo bronze in the 18th Sukma Games in the featherweight over 63kg and not exceeding 68kg male category at the Stadium Perpaduan, Petra Jaya in Kuching yesterday.
The Brunei Darussalam exponent beat Pulau Pinang’s Yong Siong How in the first round before defeating Tue You Jing of Johor in the quarterfinals to guarantee bronze.
Ahmad Izzat Ahsanuddin narrowly missed out on a place in the gold medal match after losing 13-15 to Chai Chun Hui of Sarawak in the semi-finals.
Taekwondo team manager Pengiran Abdul Raub Pengiran Haji Ghani hailed the immediate success of the Bruneian athlete in his first participation in Sukma.
“It was a fine achievement for our participant (Ahmad Izzat) considering that he was a new and young athlete in his first participation in Sukma”, Pengiran Abdul Raub said.
“He possess huge potential to win medals in future events”, the manager concluded.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Riduan bin Abdullah of Brunei Darussalam missed out on bronze after losing the second reperchage event to Dharman A/L Radha Krishnan of Selangor in the under 75kg male kumite event.
Mohammad Riduan had earlier renewed hopes of winning a medal after disposing Manimaran A/L Mahesan of Malacca having started the competition in defeat against Vicknesh A/L Rukku Mangtan of Negeri Sembilan.
