UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday welcomed a total of 1,044 students for the new academic session.
The breakdown of the fresh intake comprised of 616 undergraduates, 231 UniBridge students, 178 in the Masters programme and 19 PhD students.
In a special address for the UBD Freshers Week of the August 2016 intake, Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, the Vice-Chancellor of UBD, said, “We have nearly 6,000 people here in UBD, both foreign and local.
“Our students, lecturers, staff and professors… represent different dimensions of life, different perspectives and different ideas. Everybody brings a unique set of experiences and knowledge and, more importantly, everybody is learning from each other. And you, too, are now part of this massive learning process.”
UBD, she added, “is Brunei’s oldest and biggest university. We are also one of Asia’s fastest improving universities and we are getting better, faster – and you, the students of UBD, are an important part of our efforts to be the best in Asia”.
Aside from highlighting the university’s GenNext programme, the vice-chancellor also challenged the new students to be imaginative, original and inquisitive, urging them to try out new ideas and realise their true potential.
The Freshers Week is a biennial event organised by UBD’s Students Affairs Section in cooperation with the Student Representative Council.
It provides a platform for new students to meet with faculty members, programme leaders and coordinators to explore the diverse opportunities and programmes that the university has to offer.
Throughout the week, the new students will undergo information sessions, as well as briefings on how to use the UBD online learning management system, which allows them to send and receive documents for their respective courses.
In addition, campus and library tours will be conducted, to give the students an idea of the facilities available to enrich their educational experiences while at UBD.
