PEHIN Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, the Minister of Religious Affairs, yesterday called on the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) to provide a more conducive learning environment for its students.

The minister was speaking at the launching ceremony of the 10th Ta’aruf Week at KUPU SB, during which a total of 228 new students were welcomed to the university.

The minister also urged the leaders and academic personnel of KUPU SB to be a source of inspiration for the students, and motivate them towards becoming successful graduates.

“I am confident that the leadership and academic personnel of KUPU SB will ensure all the essential qualities which define it as a higher educational institution at university level,” he said.

He went on to add these qualities should be reflected in the academic programmes being offered at the university.

The minister also urged KUPU SB to motivate the fresh student intake to pursue religious studies, up to the Doctorate level.

“The current and future lifestyle, with over reliance on technology, calls for more scholars in the religious field, with expert knowledge and maturity,” he said.

“It is crucial for us to advance the educational standards at religious and Arabic schools up to university level, so that our country’s religion will continue to provide meaningful guidance.”

Ustaz Haji Mohd Syahiran bin Haji Mohd Sofian, the Student’s Dean, described Ta’aruf Week in his welcoming remarks as a means of exposure for the new students, to the academic life and culture at the university. Ta’aruf Week, which concludes on July 30, aims to instil time management skills, as well as sense of responsibility, among the new intake.

Also present at yesterday’s launching ceremony were Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs; and Haji Harun bin Haji Junid and Roslan bin Haji Taja’ah, the Deputy Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
