THE Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Products and Technological Advancement (CIPTA) Award 2017 Competition roadshow was yesterday held at the Multipurpose Hall of Bumiputra Complex Hall in Bangar, Temburong.
The roadshow aimed to raise public awareness of the ongoing CIPTA 2017 competition in the district and stimulate interest among students and the grassroots level to participate in the competition.
The roadshow was attended by 50 people, including YB Awang Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Ahad, a Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Belingos; Mohd Amir Hairil bin Haji Mahmud, Acting Temburong District Officer; mukim penghulus and village heads from the district; school teachers and students, as well as public members.
In her presentation, Dr Hajah Norzainah binti Haji Siau and Haji Sharul Tazrajiman bin Haji Tajuddin from the CIPTA 2017 Technical Committee, discussed the categories of the competition, rules and regulations, prizes and awards, important dates, the judging process, and examples of projects submitted in previous CIPTA competitions.
There was also an open forum at the end of the presentations, where attendees asked questions and obtained clarifications. Mini exhibitions comprising past CIPTA projects were also showcased at the roadshow.
CIPTA 2017 is the seventh instalment of the biennial competition organised by Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), in partnership with Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd, as the main sponsor.
The Crown Prince CIPTA Award Competition has the following objectives: to inspire youths and the public to develop creative products, processes or technology for national and Asean aspirations; to encourage inventions and innovation among participants; to recognise and award creative talents in the country; to encourage research and development in Brunei; to promote industrial and manufacturing processes, technological products development, commercialisation and entrepreneurship in Brunei; to motivate and instil the culture of science, engineering and technology among youths and the public; and to foster collaborative linkages within Brunei and the Asean region.
The competition is open to all schools, technical and tertiary academic institutions, government and private organisations and the general public. There are three main competitions: Category 1, 2 and 3 for local participants; the Smart Junior Competition; and the Asean Category.
For the local division, the three categories mentioned include Category 1: Creating New Product, Process or Technology; Category 2: Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology; and Category 3: Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors.
For Category 1 and 2, cash prizes of $6,000 will be awarded to the first place winner, $4,000 for second place, $2,000 prize for third place and $500 for two consolation winners.
Meanwhile, Category 3 participants will have the opportunity to win cash prizes worth $3,000 for the first place, $2,000 for second place, $1,000 for third place and $250 for two consolation prize winners.
Participants of the Smart Junior competition will have the opportunity to win cash prizes worth $1,000 for the first place winner, $800 for second place, $500 for third place and $200 for two consolation prize winners.
The Asean division carries the New Invention and Innovation Category whereby the Best Invention and Innovator will walk away with $6,000 and a trophy, while the Young Inventor Category winner as the Best Young Inventor will receive $3,000.
The winner of the Asean New Invention & Innovation Category will be eligible to compete with winners from Categories 1 and 2 in the local competition for the Crown Prince Special Award to win the grand prize of $8,000 and the CIPTA Trophy.
Each entry will be judged based on their novelty and creativity; deployment of end product; social, economic and sustainable design considerations; and the project report and presentation.
Assessment of submitted projects will be conducted in two stages starting with the preliminary assessment. Only qualified entries will be allowed to proceed to the final assessment.
The deadline for participating in CIPTA 2017 is on October 31.
