FORMER Najip FC head coach Johari Haji Bungsu passed away suddenly yesterday.
Johari famously guided the DST Super League club to the FA Cup final after stunning league champions Indera SC in the semi-finals in December 2014.
However, Johari’s work has been dedicated throughout reviving Brunei’s football even during torrid times when the country was serving a FIFA ban as he helped form the establishment of the Under-16 National Football League.
In previous months, he has helped organise futsal tournaments such as the Hyundai Euro Futsal Championships which attracted top futsal teams.
The purpose of organising the Under-16 league despite its challenges was to expose players playing in a highly competitive environment in the absence of international football.
Johari had also called for teams to appoint seasoned coaches with credentials following the success of the Under-16 league.
Johari’s recent role as the head coach of Brunei Sports School Soccer Academy (BSSSA) underlined his commitment of guiding the lower age group levels from the Under 9s to the Under 14s in search of newfound talent.
He has also supervised the lower age groups in staging a deep run in local tournaments during his reign as BSSSA head coach.
Johari also worked for Royal Televisyen Brunei mainly in a punditry and commentary role especially during DPMM FC matches.
