MINISTER of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong launched the Karnival Gerai Wawasan Mukim Liang 2019 in the Belait District yesterday.
The event, which concludes today, is organised by the Mukim Consultative Council (MPM) of Mukim Liang and the Village Consultative Council (MPK) of Kampong Sungai Liang, Kampong Lumut I, Kampong Lumut II, and Kampong RPN Lumut in collaboration with the Belait District Office.
The carnival aims to promote the Gerai Wawasan Mukim Liang as a centre of activity for business owners and residents. It also sought to promote products and services from several local SMEs.
The minister’s Belait stopover followed his visit to the Pasarneka and Tamu Tutong Complex to check on stallholders’ welfare earlier this week.
Legislative Council (LegCo) member and Penghulu of Mukim Liang Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin, Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Salminan bin Haji Burut; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Abdul Walid bin Haji Matassan, Acting Belait District Officer Ridzuan bin Haji Ahmad, and several heads of village under Mukim Liang were also present.
“I am grateful for the presence of the Minister of Home Affairs for officiating the carnival and supporting the efforts to develop the Gerai Wawasan as a centre of activity,” said Acting Village Head of Kampong RPN Lumut Pengiran Ahmad bin Pengiran Mahmud.
He said the residents of Mukim Liang have a responsibility to maintain the cleanliness and safety of the area.
“Several initiatives are being planned such as cleaning campaigns and other activities to ensure that the Gerai Wawasan is kept in the best condition,” he added.
He hoped the carnival will become an annual activity for the MPM Liang, as part of a continuous strategy to encourage participation from not only business owners from the surrounding area, but also residents of Mukim Liang.
The event was enlivened with gulingtangan and silat demonstrations by the Youth Bureau and the Culture Bureau of MPM Liang as well as a cultural performance by the Puak Dusun, Iban and Chinese communities.
The minister participated in a photo-op with performers. He received a gift of gratitude by the carnival’s committee members.
The minister toured several booths at the carnival to view products and services.
