BRUNEIAN climbers who left for Kathmandu for an expedition at Mount Everest region reached Gorak Shep and arrived at the Everest Base Camp on Saturday.

The eight climbers, who started their expedition on February 16, posed with the national flag in conjunction with Brunei Darussalam’s 35th National Day celebration at the Mount Everest region at an elevation of 5,364 metres.

They continued their journey to Kala Patthar (5,550m) yesterday and will start their descent to Pongboche (3,930m), Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and Lukla (2,840m) before returning to Kathmandu.

The group will return on March 2.

Expedition leader Haji Othman bin Haji Kamaluddin said the hardest challenge was the cold weather.

“Throughout our eight days here, ambient temperature has always been between -17 degrees to -2 degrees Celsius. In Kathmandu, the temperature is seven degrees Celcius,” Haji Othman told the Bulletin.
