Students leave for Science Olympiad in Penang

FOUR secondary school students left the country yesterday morning to participate in the 1st Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Science Olympiad (SEASO) 2019 taking place in Penang, Malaysia from today until Friday.

The students are Radin Hannah Bazilah binti Radin Safiee and Elmeeza Bazillah binti Abdullah Muhammad Yasrinal from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS), and Mohammad Amin bin Haji Mohammad Jazmi and Nur Syirin binti Sukarneva from Sayyidina Othman Secondary School.

The delegation is headed by Hajah Normimah binti Haji Abu Bakar from the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education and supervising teacher Hajah Noormah Hayati binti Haji Mohd Noor from Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School.

In the Student category, the students have to go through four levels that comprises paper and pencil test as well as hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) challenge.

Each level will test the students’ understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In the Teacher category, there will be two levels.

Level 1 involves recording, editing and creating a video/static presentation based on the students’ activity in Levels 2 and 4.

Level 2 will be answering up to 60 questions in up to 60 minutes using an answer sheet.

Hajah Normimah in an interview said, “This is the first time that we will participate in the SEAMEO SEASO and we will do our best to bring back good results for the country.”

Bidding good luck to the Brunei delegation at the Brunei International Airport was Acting Director of Schools of the Ministry of Education Dr Hajah Zurina binti Haji Harun.

The SEAMEO SEASO 2019 is a unique platform of inspiration and scientific knowledge simulation of future scientists and science academicians all over Southeast Asia and beyond.

SEASO is also a venue for sharing and dissemination of information on all fields of science studies, namely physical science, life science, social science, formal science and applied science.

SEASO aimed to stimulate scientific thinking and knowledge exploration among students in secondary school levels by applying knowledge into real life technological problem-solving skills to address multiple issues including sustainable development.

The programme plays a strong role in encouraging and involving young learners in pursuing science knowledge as well as to increase the awareness of young learners about the relationship between various science fields in daily lives.

SEASO also aims to foster camaraderie and networking among the young learners during the event.
