MINISTER of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad Hisham bin Haji Jaafar said that the change to the conventional white nurse’s uniform was based on three months of research that incorporated aspects of safety and comfort, while at the same time promoting a professional image among nursing staff.
Speaking at the launch of the new standardised uniforms yesterday, he said, “These new uniforms will be supplied in phases to nurses in hospitals and clinics in all four districts. Every nurse and midwife will receive three sets of uniforms, together with headscarves for the females.”
The new uniforms are assigned in varying colours according to the nurses’ designated roles, so that they can be easily identified by patients and clients.
Meanwhile, the minister noted the increasing challenges to the nursing profession, saying, “Among the challenges often encountered by nurses are high expectations from their heads of sections, doctors and patients, as well the patients’ families.
“Therefore, all nurses need to enrich the quality of their treatment and patient care, particularly with good communication skills.”
In noting the occupational hazards faced by nurses, including exposure to injuries and blood-borne pathogens, he said, “I truly appreciate the contributions and sacrifices made by all nurses, and I would encourage them to continue advancing their skills and excellence.”
