Talk sheds light on Halal products procedures

UNIVERSITI Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) through the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre held the final series of a knowledge sharing event titled ‘Halalan Thayyiban Talk Series 3’ at the university’s Jubilee Hall last Thursday.

According to a press release, 100 students, lecturers and staff from the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre attended the session.

The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Rais of the Religious Unit of the Halalan Thayyiban Student Society Mohammad Hadisaifullah bin Abdul Rahim.

Guest speaker, Senior Religious Officer at the Halal Food Control Division (BKMH) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Ahmad Haziq bin Haji Abdul Hamid, shared background information on the BKMH and its responsibilities in monitoring the import and production of halal food and products in Brunei in collaboration with the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB), the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office.

He explained the procedure for importing Halal meat into Brunei as well as the application of Halal certificates for every local slaughterhouse.

He emphasised the role of observer officers chaired by the Syariah affairs director to ensure that the slaughter process at abattoirs abroad follow the specified conditions to ensure the quality, cleanliness and Halal status of the meat.

It was shared that the stunning process is not recommended except for four-legged animals such as cows, with the condition that the animal’s bones are not cracked because this can categorise it as being haram to eat.

He also explained that if applicants fail to apply for a Halal certification or if the Halal logo is misused, it will be subject to action, notes the press release.

A question-and-answer session was also held.

It is hoped that the sharing session will enable students to contribute to the development of the Halal industry and raise awareness among consumers about the importance of Halal products.
