A MINOR fire broke out yesterday on the fourth floor of Kota Mutiara Department Store in Bandar Seri Begawan, suspected to be caused by a lit cigarette butt thrown from the floor above.
According to a security officer, the fire was first noticed by motorists passing though the area, who alerted the building’s security personnel.
The security officers with the assistance of a Bangladeshi worker extinguished the fire using a dry powder fire extinguisher.
The total damage from the fire is estimated at BND50.
In light of the incident, the Fire and Rescue Department issued a reminder that it is against the law to smoke in public spaces.
The department also cautioned the public on the dangers of overloaded electrical circuits and advised them to get their home electrical installations and wiring regularly checked and maintained by electrical companies accredited by the Department of Electrical Services.
