Prince Haji Sufri attends Bayt Qatar reception in Rio

HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, the President of Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) attended the opening reception of Bayt Qatar in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last week.

Officially launched by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) including Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, the President of Qatar Olympic Committee, Bayt Qatar is an Olympic hospitality house that showcases Qatar’s culture, heritage and passion for sport throughout the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

According to the Qatar Tribune, speaking during the opening reception, Sheikh Joaan said, “The Olympic Games provide an occasion like no other to bridge sport, culture, education and diversity in a true celebration of Olympism.

“Qatar is a nation passionate about sport. We believe in the power of sport to unite cultures, backgrounds and beliefs – and encourage mutual understanding, friendship and respect. This is exactly what we aim to spread through Bayt Qatar.

Nawal El Moutawakel, Vice-President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) was also present at the reception with other invited officials.

During the trip to the Rio Olympic Games, His Royal Highness took time to take a closer look at the training venues of Brunei’s athletes.

His Royal Highness visited the athletic training venue where Bruneian athletes Mohd Fakhri bin Ismail and Maizurah binti Abdul Rahim are training. Mohd Fakhri will be competing in the men’s 100m event and Maizurah will be sprinting in the women’s 200m.

The President of BDNOC also took a closer look at the badminton training venue where national badminton player Jaspar Yu is training.

On Thursday evening, His Royal Highness attended the IOC dinner hosted by Thomas Bach, the President of IOC. His Royal Highness is set to return to Brunei Darussalam from Brazil today.
