WIRNA bin Haji Mohd Yassin seized control of the Brunei Petanque League 2016 in the current standings after notching victory in the month of August at the Petanque Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex recently.
The player accumulated a maximum of 16 points after ousting Mazlan bin Haji Yahya 13-5 in the final to take the lead from July’s winner Hamidun bin Haji Abdul Hamid who lost ground in the overall point race.
Wirna’s back-to-back finals appearance in consecutive months coupled with consistent displays helped him collect 31 points putting to rest his resounding final loss to Hamidun in July.
The victory also earned him a coveted yellow jersey and a commemorative plaque.
Mazlan remains in firm contention in the overall championship title after entering the final and his efforts helped him climb to second spot in the standings with the seasoned thrower accumulating 29 total points after two rounds.
Hamidun fell outside the top five this month which significantly affected his position as he dropped to third with a total of 26 points and trails the championship leader by five points.
Azmi Eddy bin Mohd Harris improved his position compared to last month from fifth to fourth to put him fourth in the overall race with 25 points.
Masli bin Haji Mohd Said completed the top five with 24 points in the race for the overall championship title.
A total of 28 players divided into eight groups took part in the competition in the preliminary rounds with the best 16 throwers advancing to the second round and the top eight progressing to the third round.
The top four players will enter the semi-finals to determine the top four slots.
Presenting the prizes to the winners was Haji Rosmin bin Haji Mohd Hassan, Secretary General of the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation.
