The Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Change (BNCCC) launched the nation’s first climate change policy, the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP) on July 25.
The BNCCP aims to pave the country’s low carbon and climate-resilient pathways for a sustainable nation. An Operational Document Task Force (ODTF) has been set up to produce a detailed Operational Document to operationalise the BNCCP, a press release stated.
A series of workshops representing ODTF for 10 BNCCP strategies are planned over the next six weeks.
The first ODTF workshop on BNCCP Strategy 3 on Electric Vehicles was conducted at the Amar Pahlawan Hall, Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) on Wednesday and yesterday.
The workshop was co-organised by the MTIC and the Ministry of Energy (ME) as co-lead agencies, supported by the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications, Cybersecurity, Strategy and Corporate) at the MTIC Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim opened the workshop.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Energy and Power) at the ME Pengiran Haji Jamra Weira bin Pengiran Haji Petra and Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Transport, Research and Development) at the MTIC Pengiran Haji Mohd Zain bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Razak were also present.
Thirty-three participants from stakeholders such as government agencies, private sectors, research institutions and associations attended the workshop to formulate the Operational Document to increase the total share of Electric Vehicles to 60 per cent of total annual vehicles sales by 2035.
The workshop was co-facilitated by both the co-lead agencies and external co-facilitator from the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd.
The ODTF was established to formulate a strategically coordinated, comprehensive and coherent roadmap, that includes a detailed long-term action plan, key enablers, timeline, detailed KPIs, as well as monitoring and reporting mechanisms to achieve effective implementation of the 10 BNCCP strategies which are Industrial Emissions, Forest Cover, Electric Vehicles, Renewable Energy, Power Management, Carbon Pricing, Waste Management, Climate Resilience and Adaptation, Carbon Inventory, and Awareness
and Education.
The next series of ODTF workshops for the other strategies will continue from August 31 until September 23.
The first draft of the BNCCP Operation Document is expected to be finalised by the end of October, to be reported to the Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Change.
