The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) through the Community Development Department (JAPEM) held the launch for the Sewing Class Community Programme for the residents of the Temporary Settlement Centre at the Pusat Bahagia in Kampong Pulaie yesterday.
Guest of honour Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin launched the programme.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Community) of the MCYS Saidah binti Haji Wahid, and officers from JAPEM and workshop participants were also present.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Kampong Bengkurong Mosque Affairs Officer Mohammad Zahid Zakhwan bin Mohd Said followed by a welcoming remark by Assistant Director of JAPEM Dayangku Siti Saihalina binti Pengiran Haji Md Daud.
Participants will undergo three months training and business course before they become group entrepreneurs, she explained. MCYS will provide a place for training and the necessities needed without charges and will also look for a business site which will be suitable for them to conduct tailoring.
She added, this is following the success of previous participants who managed to operate a tailoring business and generated income.
Sixteen participants enrolled in the class which is the fourth programme being held to help single mothers and recipients of the monthly welfare assistance to improve their livelihood.
The programme aims to empower single mothers and those with low incomes to hone their skills in the field of sewing and entrepreneurship. It is also hoped that participants can be financially independent and become successful entrepreneurs.
