BRUNEI Darussalam has the third highest social media penetration in the world with 370,000 users, or 86 per cent of the total population, according to the new Digital in 2017 Global Overview report from We Are Social and Hootsuite released this week.

Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) topped the chart with 99 per cent social media use, said the report which also highlighted that more than half of the world’s population now use the Internet.

The latest data shows that eight countries around the world now have social media penetration levels in excess of 80 per cent, although it is possible that the penetration figures for both Qatar and the UAE are skewed by short-term fluctuations in migrant populations (for example, expatriates working in Qatar to help prepare the country for the FIFA World Cup in 2020).

Brunei Darussalam also fared very high in terms of penetration of mobile social media with 76 per cent using it, and is the sixth highest globally after Qatar, the UAE, South Korea, Aruba and Maldives.

In total, 10 countries have mobile social media penetration rates in excess of 70 per cent, but 43 countries have penetration rates of less than 10 per cent, the majority of which are in Africa.

This year’s report also highlighted that more than half the world now use a smartphone: almost two-thirds of the world’s population now has a mobile phone; more than half of the world’s web traffic now comes from mobile phones; more than half of all mobile connections around the world are now broadband; and that more than one in five of the world’s population shopped online in the past 30 days.

The digital world experienced spectacular growth in 2016, with the pace of change accelerating across almost all key indicators versus 2015, the report noted.

According to 2017 statistics, there are 3.77 billion global Internet users in 2017, equalling 50 per cent penetration; 2.80 billion global social media users, equalling 37 per cent penetration; 4.92 billion global mobile users, equalling 66 per cent penetration; 2.56 billion global mobile social media users, equalling 34 per cent penetration; and 1.61 billion global e-commerce users, equalling 22 per cent penetration.

The report also stated that Facebook accounted for the lion’s share of total social media user growth last year, increasing its global footprint by 363 million monthly active accounts in 2016, and delivering year-on-year growth of 24 per cent. More than one billion people now use Facebook every day.

WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram – all reported strong growth over the year too, and while there is likely to be considerable user duplication across their platforms, Facebook Inc’s combined audiences now total more than 4.37 billion. Brunei has the highest social media penetration in Asean, more than double the global average, global digital media consultancy We Are Social’s Singapore office said in its report in October last year.

According to the report, Brunei Darussalam had 270,000 active social media users in the fourth quarter of 2015, representing 69 per cent of the population. The vast majority of these users – some 250,000 people – predominantly used mobile devices to access social media, representing an overall mobile social penetration rate of 64 per cent.

A SALE bazaar titled ‘Bah, Singgah’ (loosely translated as ‘have a stop’ or ‘have a detour’) was opened to the public on January 27 and will end on January 30. The bazaar is located at the Pusat Insani in Seria.

The bazaar is host to 60 vendors selling goods ranging from food to boutique items, with most of the booths originating from the Belait District. Haji Haris bin Othman, Belait District Officer was present on the first day of the bazaar to officiate the event.

Faza Suraj, Event Manager of Plaza Sutera Biru, in an interview said, “The aim of this event is to support local businesses and to help them promote their businesses to the public. Turnout for this bazaar is higher than we expected and we expect to see more in the days to come.”

Tengku Taufiq Tunku Mahmud, Group Executive Manager of Plaza Sutera Biru, added, “This sale bazaar, ‘Bah, Singgah’ will be a monthly event, with each month starting from next month (February) to carry a theme associated with that month’s bazaar.”

Belait District Officer Haji Haris in an interview said, “I am happy to see such a huge turnout from both the vendors and the people who came and I hope to see more shops focusing on their more popular assets in order to maximise their profits.”

In an interview, one of the owners of start-up food vendor called Burger Street, Mohd Mustaakim Mizzat bin Haji Gibli, 20, said, “We started Burger Street in 2016, as a way to make use of our time wasted doing nothing. We started learning how to make burgers and the sauces through YouTube and experimenting using different recipes. Through that we refined our burger to what they are today.

“This bazaar is a great way to increase our exposure to the public and as well as an opportunity to increase profit,” he added.

Guest of honour Haji Haris was welcomed by Pengiran Md Noor Joffren bin Pengiran Omar, Managing Partner of Plaza Sutera Biru and both were involved in the ribbon-cutting ceremony to officiate the launching of the bazaar. The guest of honour then visited the many vendors at the bazaar.

While this bazaar will end on January 30, more bazaar events are planned for the coming months with the next one being planned for February 28 with the theme ‘All About the Ladies’.

Children must be exposed to Al-Quran from early age

A TALK on Quranic Parenting delivered by Dr Widad binti Haji Abdul Aziz, a lecturer from the Faculty of Syariah and Law of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) was held recently at the i-Centre in Anggerek Desa. It was organised by the Quran Project Brunei in collaboration with Al-Huffaz Management.

Dr Widad said children must be exposed to the Al-Quran from an early age although some parents object such an approach as they argue that children should not be forced to do so at such an early age and chose to let them watch their favourite television programme instead. Parents should bear in mind that not all cartoon series are good for children.

She insisted that Al-Quran can be applied at an early age. It is not about strength or effort but Allah the Almighty has bestowed small children with the ability to memorise few verses from the Al-Quran.

“We also want children to know Al-Quran, who gave the Al-Quran, who presented the Al-Quran, its contents and so on. The Al-Quran should remain in their hearts,” she added.

She also added that social ills are occurring nowadays and will continue to happen if the community is not taking Al-Quran seriously. Moral decadence among youths is rampant because religious education is not embraced at an early age.

“We see social problems, promiscuity between men and women where the parents are not able to give advice in fear of flicking the hearts of their children. They let the social illness spread. Parents actually have a stake in contributing to the upliftment of their children,” she said.

Malays urged to grow MSMEs into SMEs

GLOBAL economic uncertainty, stiff competition and the urgent need to elevate micro, small and medium sized entrepreneurs (MSMEs) are some of the major challenges faced by Malay businesses in the country.

Speaking on the sidelines of the annual general meeting (AGM) for the Federation of Brunei-Malay Entrepreneurs (PPPMB) yesterday at the Design and Technology Building in Kampong Anggerek Desa, its President Dr Haji Abdul Latif bin Haji Chuchu told the Sunday Bulletin that these MSMEs should not confine themselves to being at the micro level forever or to being stuck selling at food stalls, but to upgrade their status by moving towards becoming small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“With the establishment of DARe (Darussalam Enterprise), where my portfolio is in SME development, there are vast opportunities available to tackle problems like the fate of food stall vendors in Gadong. Now we see tremendous development – such as with the construction of a new building in the area,” he said.

At the AGM, Dr Haji Abdul Latif pointed out that food stall businesses (MSMEs) at Gadong are monopolised by Malays. However, this is not the case in SME businesses, which are mainly monopolised by other ethnicities.

“We encourage more youths to engage in business. We have sent over 20 to China for training, while 31 young entrepreneurs have been sent to Japan to undergo courses. Business and economy should be the first choice and should be dominated by Malays,” he said.

He noted that PPPMB has organised courses such as in business and accounting, as businesses today are unlike they were 30 years ago, with accounting knowledge being crucial.

“In March, we are going to conduct a Food Processing and Marketing course and we hope participants will make use of this valuable course to export their products overseas or to sell them locally,” he said.

The federation is also a member of OISKA (based in Japan) and in the long run, PPPMB is planning to manage light industries in Beribi and carry out industrial activities on a 22-hectare site in Kuala Lurah, where an Italian company is mulling stationing a helicopter and light aircraft industry.

Dr Haji Abdul Latif highlighted the need for unity among members so as to further develop the federation.

“We hope it progresses for the sake of the Malay entrepreneurs. There should be no backstabbing among members and discussion should be held in a positive manner, without baseless accusations or finger-pointing,” he said.

Back in 1998, the federation had 25 registered members. Today, that figure stands close to 400, with strong involvement from youths who have become successors of businesses. Veteran businesspeople are rare nowadays with more of them becoming consumers.

Meanwhile, PPPMB Chairman Haji Mohammad bin Mokti said business should be the first choice. Over the past seven years, the federation has moved ahead as an organisation despite the highs and lows faced by members.

THE Chinese community in the country yesterday welcomed the Lunar Year of the Rooster with pomp and gaiety.

As beating of drums and clash of cymbals resonated throughout the Capital, hundreds of members of the Chinese community converged at the Teng Yun Temple to mark the beginning of the Chinese New Year.

The biggest event of the Chinese calendar, it is customary for Chinese communities all over the world to start off their Lunar New Year’s first day with offerings and prayers at a temple, and the community in Brunei Darussalam is no exception.

Adding glitter to the celebrations was the lion dance. Amid cheers in a vibrant atmosphere, the Lion Dance Troupe from Chung Hwa Middle School entered the temple’s courtyard to kick off the celebrations, performing to a crowd who had gathered as early as 7am to witness the colourful and lively performance.

The troupe later made their way into the temple, where worshippers could be seen entering and exiting to pay respects to their ancestors and make offerings as part of traditional prayers for prosperity, health and peace.

Also present at the celebration yesterday was the newly-appointed High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Brunei Darussalam Air Vice-Marshal Mahmud Hussain and spouse, who arrived in the country just two months ago.

Half of the roads in the capital were temporary closed down to give way to the performances that were held inside the temple premises and outside.

The celebration attracted several visiting tourists who took the opportunity to take photographs of the lion and dragon dance performances.

Also at the event were local shutterbugs from the Brunei Darussalam Photographic Society.

The Royal Brunei Police Force was stationed in the area to control the crowd and ease traffic.

The ceremony was also attended by the executive committee members of the temple who handed over red packets to lion dance performers for good luck. A large gathering of parents along with their kids were on the scene in high spirits to witness the celebration.

Chinese New Year celebrations showcase the nation’s multi-racial community, with people regardless of race conveying good wishes to their Chinese friends.

SINCE its December 2010 debut, the Nissan Leaf has become one of the best-selling electric vehicles (EV) in the world – with over 43,000 drivers around the globe choosing the vehicle for its zero-emission of carbon dioxide during driving.

As part of the Nissan A2Z Tour 2016 in Japan, media representatives were given the opportunity to test drive the Nissan Leaf, with the aim of experiencing its technology and performance.

The Nissan Leaf engine is quiet when starting and while driving, yet it still offers strong acceleration. The vehicle is easy to handle – even at sharp corners, and an interesting feature is the slowdown rate when you take your foot off the pedal – it significantly slows down at a better rate than normal vehicles.

Whether driving at 40km/h or 100km/h, the drive feels smooth.

Highlighting the basic EV structure of the Nissan Leaf, it has a high voltage unit that includes an electric motor, inverter and DC/DC converter that has been integrated, resulting in a 30 per cent volume reduction and 10 per cent mass reduction.

The current model is about 80kg lighter than the previous model as it uses a combination of integrated functions and lighter parts.

In terms of looks, the exterior is sportier, equipped with trendy LED headlights with its auto-levelling blue reflection LED lights and front fog lights. The interior is chic and elegant, with a straightforward gearshift.

As an EV, the Leaf was developed in accordance with the company’s commitment of using recycled materials as much as possible to minimise environmental impact. It has a long-life charging mode where the battery is charged to 80 per cent to extend its battery life and is also available in any charging mode.

According to the information in the media guidebook, there are at present approximately 400 sales outlets in Japan equipped with quick chargers. To offer even greater convenience and accessibility to Leaf owners, Nissan plans to expand the availability of quick chargers to 700 sales outlets in Japan.

Once the expansion is completed, one-third of dealers will be able to offer quick charging services.

MANY historians in the Muslim world believe that the foundations of the world’s civilisation stemmed from their Islamic roots, and the stories of courageous leaders still motivate current generations to continue their forefathers’ legacy.

Among the illustrious Muslim leaders was Sultan Nur al-Din Al-Zanki of Syria, who conquered the principality of Antioch (today is part of Turkey and Syria), which was populated by Armenians and Greek Orthodox Christians under the rule of Joscelin II of Edessa (present day Turkey).

Nur Al-Din was also a political figure, who formed an alliance with Iraq to strengthen and fortify his nation. (Islam is still the primary religion of Syria with Muslims making up 90 per cent of the population)

Similarly, Sultan Salahuddin Al-Ayubi of Egypt and his success in defeating the Christian crusaders made him a legendary figure throughout the Muslim world. After defeating the Zengids in battle, Salahuddin was proclaimed as the sultan of Egypt and Syria, but his most notable success was the Battle of Hatting when he conquered Palestine and claimed Jerusalem from the Christian crusaders.

Unlike other sultans, he bequeathed most of his wealth to his subjects. His generosity and courage made him a prominent figure for both Arab and Turkish Muslims.

Brunei is a small country, by comparison, and its history not as well-known to the rest of the Muslim world. But the Malay Archipelago has also had its fair share of prominent Muslim leaders. In the book, ‘Sultan Saleh Di Nusantara’, Hasanuddin Yusof recorded the histories of 24 Brunei sultans, of whom several contributed towards the spread and growth of Islam, while the rest devoted their energy to resisting the aggressive intervention of Western powers attempting to spread Christianity.

Sultan Sharif Ali was renowned for his devotion to Islam, as was Sultan Hassan who ordered the compilation of Brunei’s ‘Hukum Kanun’ (Islamic laws).

Their work was continued by Sultan Bolkiah, Sultan Abdul Kahar and Sultan Saiful Rijal, who were among those whose propagated Islam across Brunei and prevented it from dissipation during the Spanish invasion of 1578.

Their efforts and contributions gave strength to the Muslim community on the island of Borneo, particularly in Brunei Darussalam, which is preserved to this day.

These rulers’ legacy will be rewarded, as promised by Allah the Almighty in Surah An-Nahl, verse 97: “Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer – We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do”

Alhamdulillah, records of modern Brunei history show that Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, were dedicated to Islam as a way of life, and responsible for its propagation. Given Their Majesties’ religious education, it is hardly surprising that they always sought the views and advice of Muslim clerics in all matters relating to the management and administration of state affairs.

Their devotion to Islam was a sign of their respect and reverence for the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

According to the Constitution of Brunei Darussalam 2004 Section 3 (2) the Sovereign is the Head Official Religion of Brunei Darussalam. Established authority holds rule over Brunei Darussalam according to Chapter 4 Cerian (1) and (2).

Laws and regulations on the preservation and protection of Islam were outlined during the reign of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, which continue to this day. Among the policies carried out during Al-Marhum’s reign was the building of mosques, including the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque in 1958, one the most beautiful places of worship in Asia; establishing the Religious Affairs Department; creating the post of Mufti; establishing Arab and religious schools; and strengthening the position of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jama’ah in Brunei Darussalam.

Their Majesties’ contributions toward religion, culture and country were based on the understanding that authority is a challenging responsibility. The higher the rank, the more respon-sibilities that go along with it.

Allah the Almighty urges Muslims to obey authority, in view of the great responsibility to ensure the security of the state’s welfare and society. Based on the teachings of Islam and Brunei customs, we should obey our rulers and appreciate their commitments. As Allah the Almighty says in Surah An-Nisa’, verse 59: “O ye who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and to those entrusted with authority (those in power) from among you. And if you dispute (dispute) in a case, then you must return to the (Book of) Allah (the Quran) and (Sunnah) Messenger – if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better (for you), and more seemly in the end.”

As adherents of Sunnah Wal Jama’ah, we must be loyal to the Sultan, as long as it does not contradict the teachings of Islam. As citizens and residents, we should be grateful to Allah the Almighty for our sovereign, who is also known as the ‘Caring Monarch’.

His Majesty has carried out the mandate and responsibilities as an ‘Ulil-Amri’ (those with authority), and continues government policies as outlined by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, while emphasising the importance of religion in societal and state matters for nearly 50 years.

Throughout His Majesty’s reign, the welfare and wellbeing of the people have always been an overriding concern.

His Majesty never tires of encouraging his subjects to live in peace, and not to disregard religion, society and state.

While improving the levels of society and economy, as well as preserving the peace and security of the country, His Majesty has also raised the people’s awareness of Islam.

This includes setting up higher Islamic education institution, launching the Mushaf Brunei, establishing the Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, providing Islamic education for Muslim citizens and constructing more mosques and religious schools, while providing assistance and the provision of infrastructure to increase the people’s devotion to Allah the Almighty.

The monarch’s role as contemporary leader is a highly challenging one, and this was most apparent when His Majesty stated that the implementation of the Syariah Penal Code “would liberate us all, including those in authority, from being questioned by Allah the Almighty on the Day of Judgment.”

The close ties between the monarch and the people, that have existed for thousands of years, should be preserved and maintained from dissent and defamation, so that Islam continues to grow at a fast rate and that the dignity of Muslims are protected within a secure state.

As the citizens and residents of this country, we should obey Allah the Almighty and His Messenger, aside from obeying the sovereign. In addition, we should be grateful to Allah the Almighty so that His grace and favours on us will be multiplied. Amin.

It is the will of Allah the Almighty that Islam, as a source of happiness and well-being in this world and the hereafter, will be the religion of future generations to come while preserving the sovereignty of Brunei Darussalam in an increasingly technological era, as a Malay Islamic Monarchy based on the principles of Sunnah Wal Jama’ah.

The presence of worshippers in glorifying the mosque could enliven the practice by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and instil a sense of equality among Muslim Ummah in performing prayers and carrying out pious acts, the speaker said.

“Glorifying mosques nationwide is a platform for us to multiply our good deeds and to receive blessings from Allah the Almighty for ourselves, our family and the nation,” he added.

Members of the public can kick-start their daily routine and gain blessings by participating in mass Subuh prayer and to reap the benefits and rewards through performing ‘Wirid’ after every prayer and enrol in religious activities.
