THE 7th Brunei Wedding Festival 2017 (BWF2017), run by Songket Wedding, officially opened yesterday at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

More than 50 wedding exhibitors, including many newcomers, are taking part and aiming to top those held in previous years.

The event’s guest of honour was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Hajah Siti Radhiah binti Pengiran Maharaja Lela Sahibul Kahar Pengiran Anak Haji Mohd Yusof.

In her welcoming speech, the BWF2017’s event manager Liz Alli highlighted the festival’s yearly objective to aid the development of the local wedding industry.

“We truly believe that creating a singular platform for wedding-related businesses will help improve the quality of this industry by increasing awareness of such businesses to the public at large, and also by creating a friendly arena in which these businesses can compete in delivering the best service to consumers,” she said.

They include the ‘Mengubah Sirih Junjung’ competition and ‘Menambat Dastar’ contest organised by HYS Tindulang with the support of JHLL.

There will also be a grand lucky draw whereby contestants stand a chance to win a set of bride-and-groom-wear worth $10,000 sponsored by one of the Malaysian vendors and renowned fashion designer – Wanpa.

In addition, there is the Best Booth Decoration competition for vendors, similar to previous years, to bring out the creativity among exhibitors.

UNIVERSITI Teknologi Brunei (UTB) through its UTB School of Business is introducing a new initiative, which will require all of its Business undergraduates to set up a registered company by their third year of study.

This initiative is in response to the titah of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of UTB, at the UTB Convocation Ceremony 2016, in which His Majesty urged UTB to continue introducing other relevant programmes that can boost the country’s economic development.

This includes efforts to review and revise its curriculum in the field of entrepreneurship.

In an interview, Dr Haji Saleem bin Haji Nazmudeen, the Dean of UTB School of Business, said that the initiative is to prepare the future graduates with an entrepreneurial mindset.

The dean also mentioned that the modern economic growth is based on the rapid growth of new small and medium enterprises (SMEs). However, entrepreneurial opportunities cannot be developed and created by a single agency alone.

Therefore, UTB will be working very closely with DARe (Darussalam Enterprise), the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) and other relevant government and private agencies to ensure students are guided and supported in their business ventures.

An entrepreneurship incubator has also been established by the school to further support this initiative.

The core activities of the entrepreneurship initiative include licensing (capitalisation of knowledge) and the creation of new ventures (new firms, start-ups and spin-offs) thus potentially creating new jobs and other utilisation efforts. The business ventures will provide UTB graduates with the necessary skills and empowerment to face the competitive economy. Students will be equipped with entrepreneurial experience, which can help develop, and strengthen their skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving.

The entrepreneurship initiative is also hoped to support Brunei Darussalam’s talent growth as well as contribute to the economic development of the country.

In the long run, the school aspires to become a knowledge hub for entrepreneurs, investors and other stakeholders by building an Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation Centre at the university. Amongst others, the school also aims to achieve near 100 per cent employability rate for the graduates through this new entrepreneurship initiative.

During the interview, Dr Haji Saleem also shared that all the Business programmes offered by UTB School of Business highly emphasise on outcome-based learning, shifting away from the traditional teaching/learning model and are blended with information systems and technology, which would make UTB graduates more competitive, and market-ready once they graduate, as according to the dean, in today’s world the success of any business depends on innovation and today’s innovation is driven by Information Technology.

THE Energy and Industry Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EIDPMO) announced yesterday that JobCentre Brunei (JCB) officially began its operations on January 11, 2017 and is open to all local jobseekers and companies.

In a press release, EIDPMO explained that JCB strives to be a “one-stop career centre”, where local jobseekers may utilise available services to help improve their employability and marketability in the job market and where private companies may use its facilities for their local recruitment process.

The enhancement of JCB is one of the actions put forward by the Manpower Planning Council (MPC) to address the issues of job matching for local jobseekers and to provide assistance for companies in their talent search.

JCB is a platform for the job-matching process, whereby local jobseekers may consult job requirements and descriptions of vacancies in the private sector which commensurate with their qualifications.

To utilise the available services and facilities, local jobseekers will need to register online at www.jobcentrebrunei.gov.bn.

Other services include the availability of counselling sessions to help jobseekers determine the appropriate career direction, and improve their employability and marketability in the local job market.

Upskilling programmes on offer include ‘CV Writing and Interview Tips’, ‘Digital Literacy’ and various motivational talks from outstanding individuals.

Local jobseekers may also consult JCB for relevant apprenticeship opportunities. Aside from its programmes and services, JCB also provides jobseekers the opportunity to undergo online training, especially for those who do not have the convenience of having computers at home.

JCB also provides interviewing rooms, meeting rooms and auditorium facilities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) to utilise in the process of recruitment-related activities, development of local jobseekers and staff engagement.

In addition to providing services to jobseekers, JCB also functions as a monitoring agency for the mandatory registration of companies, job vacancies in the private sector and local jobseekers, which is hoped to improve local recruitment in the private sector.

Prior to any applications for ‘Foreign Worker Permit’ (LPA) being made, all jobs in the private sector are to be advertised in the JCB system first. This is to provide employment opportunities to registered local jobseekers in the JCB system.

Starting February 1, 2017, JCB has begun its new operating hours for counter service. The new operating hours are as follows: Monday to Saturday, 8am to 11.45am and 2pm to 4pm, except Friday, 8am to 11.30am and 2pm to 4pm.

FOUR-TIME DST National Veteran Football League President Cup winners XN FT avoided a tricky tie against eternal rivals Al Idrus FT after the duo were separated in different groups during a Veteran Football Association (VFA) managers’ meeting and team draw at the NFABD House yesterday.

Huge interest was centred on the two veteran elites but they got their names on the opposite ends of the draw as XN FT were drawn in an easier group in Group ‘C’ while Al Idrus have a tricky Group ‘B’ to contend with.

The two veteran titans also avoid a mouth-watering confrontation in the first round of the newly renamed VFA Cup as Al Idrus and XN FT will both face newcomers Hikayat FC and Panaga 2000, respectively.

This year, VFA has made the league more interesting after splitting the teams in President 1 and President 2 with 20 teams making the former and 22 teams the latter.

With four teams pulling out this year, President 2 will introduce new teams including Panaga 2000, ASMDB FT, Hikayat FC and AH United FC.

Meanwhile, former President Cup winners PSJD are a household name to emerge in President 2 who will be desperate to erase memories of last season with a confident start.

Team managers also listened in a briefing of the revised Laws of the Game which among others stated that play continues if the ball hits a match official unless the ball went out of play.

The President Cup reigning champions will be gunning for a record-breaking fifth title while Al Idrus will again be touted as their nearest challengers to both the President and VFA Cup crowns.

THE students of International School Brunei (ISB) celebrated Chinese culture with plenty of noise and enthusiasm yesterday as they held a Chinese New Year (CNY) assembly across the whole school.

With the entire school dressed in red, the assemblies began with the students settling into the school theatre eager with anticipation awaiting the emcees from the student councils to begin the performances.

Joining the fun were His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel and Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah, the son and daughter of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam; Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muneerah Madhul Bolkiah binti Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.

Also present was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak ‘Abdul Haseeb bin Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim, the son of Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah.

The emcees enlightened the students on the significance of the traditional Lunar New Year celebrations for the Chinese community, which is well represented both in Brunei, and in terms of the ISB student body.

The emcees then handed the stage over to the Mandarin Language department, who had performances prepared involving the primary and secondary year groups.

The first two performances of the morning were a piano duet by Claire and Belle from Year 9, and Tanit from Year 12 playing the butterfly harp. Subsequently, there was a singing performance of Xi Ci Ha Ha Guo Xin Nian, followed by Xin Nian Hao song, and a Hip Hop performance to Cai Cai Cai.

Throughout the assemblies there were also various dances performed, including a KungFu dance, Flower dance, Fan Dance and a Chicken dance.

The participants in the performances – second language Mandarin students representing a range of nationalities including Chinese, Korean, British, Australia – started with a song.

The main event was, of course, the Lion Dance performed by the secondary Mandarin students, and it was greeted by a chorus of oohs, aahs, screams and laughter as the Lions went about entertaining the crowd.

To close the assembly, performers were applauded and the organisers – Yang Pen and Cikgu Ayu Mee along with their team – were thanked for their roles in the event.

It was an excellent opportunity to celebrate multicultural respect and tolerance, an idea ISB stands firmly behind. The children benefitted by gaining a great understanding of a community tradition that is celebrated not only in Brunei and China, but throughout the world.

TRADERS and visitors at the refurbished Pasar Pelbagai Barangan in Gadong received an unscheduled visit by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam last night.

His Majesty, who arrived at about 8.30pm, spent a full hour mingling with vendors and visitors who were awestruck at the monarch’s surprise visit.

The high-roofing of the night market provided ample cover to deter the light rainfall last night.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by a crowd of people who were thronging the busy market hunting for their favourite local delicacies.

The ruler walked through the spacious alleyways, passing by the vendors who expressed gratitude to His Majesty for reviving the night market in Gadong.

This justifies His Majesty’s image as “the people’s monarch” for being on the ground together with his people and listening to any grievances expressed, said Muizzuddin, co-founder of Street Waffles (SWE).

“We could not believe that we had the chance to meet His Majesty in person and have a face-to-face conversation,” he added.

He was one of the 16 young entrepreneurs who were granted with the Micro-Credit Scheme, an initiative by DARE (Darussalam Enterprise).

Muizzuddin also received a unique gift as a memento when His Majesty signed on his menu cover. The menu is now proudly placed at his stall where he described it as a “royal blessing”.

Meanwhile, Estonian tourists, Riina Vello and Agne Tsääro, happened to be at the right place and the right time when they got the rare opportunity to take photos with the monarch.

“It is our first time in Brunei and it is very clean here and the people are very polite and helpful. We visited the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the capital as well as Kampong Ayer today. Our encounter with His Majesty just made our trip to Brunei more worthwhile,” they said.

They added that they will be visiting Ulu Temburong the next day before they continue their tour to Kuching, Sarawak and the rest of Borneo.

The project shows His Majesty’s concern for the vendors at the popular night market and the monarch’s commitment to resolving the problems faced by the hard-working men and women who have been keeping the market appealing to visitors near and far.

The new Pasar Pelbagai Barangan Gadong has taken into account the needs of vendors and visitors with ample parking space, high-roof ceilings, smoke ventilation system, spacious alleyways, prayer hall and other amenities including fire preventions, routine maintenance and hygiene control.

The Pasar Pelbagai Barangan was officially launched on Thursday by Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The refurbishment of the market was done under the Julangan Titah Project, an initiative of the Office of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

BRUNEI Darussalam’s efforts to diversify its economy by creating new business opportunities and attracting foreign direct investments continue to show positive results.

Supporting the Sultanate’s ambitious growth goals, Turkish food manufacturing company Marsa Yag Sanayi Ve Ticaret Anonim Sirketi based in Istanbul is set to open up a margarine manufacturing facility in Brunei Darussalam as part of its regional expansion plans.

The company named Western Foods and Packaging Sdn Bhd (WFP) will begin production in April 2017, the Ministry of Finance said yesterday.

The establishment of Western Foods and Packaging (WFP) in Brunei is expected to leverage the Turkish company’s expertise in producing margarine, oil and fats for the export market.

A joint-venture between the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Strategic Development Capital Fund of the Ministry of Finance and Marsa Yag Sanayi Ve Ticaret Anonim Sirketi, the project will spur the country’s economic growth in sectors outside oil and gas and create more job opportunities for Bruneians.

Marsa was established in Turkey in 1922.

While the company’s products were initially produced for local consumption, it began exporting in 1969.

The company currently exports products to 60 countries across the world and has a total turnover of over $100 million.

The company’s annual production capacity includes 200,000 tonnes of margarine and 100,000 tonnes of liquid oil mainly from its plant in Adana, the largest in Turkey. The company also produces shortening, sunflower oil, olive oil, ghee, pasta, flour, powder soup, desserts and semolina. Marsa aims to strengthen its global market status through its advanced production technology, world-standard quality and new products.

WFP’s manufacturing facility is built on a 1.9 hectare site in Serasa Industrial Area and set to begin production in April 2017 with a starting production capacity of 200 tonnes per day of margarine.

The main raw material for the production of margarine is palm oil and the finished products will be exported to the Asian region. WFP is currently in the process of getting Halal certification for its plant and its products to cater to Muslim consumers as well as to help promoting Brunei Darussalam’s Halal logo internationally.

WFP is also looking into downstream opportunities for its products which can be used as ingredients to make biscuits, chocolates, pastries and ice cream. Its by-products can be used as chicken feed and to make soap and detergent.

The company, which currently employs 17 people comprising 13 locals and four expatriates, is expected to create 100 jobs for locals when it goes into full production this year.

SCR Xpress Citis Square has introduced a value-for-money meal featuring a breakfast combo of two soft boiled eggs, two pieces of chicken sausages, two slices of toasted bread with butter and a large glass of Teh C or Teh Tarik.

Manager Florence Nava noted that their value for money breakfast combo also has the option of enjoying the breakfast in their lobby (fully air conditioned) lazing amidst scores of palm trees and a sun umbrella with breakfast served between 8am to 10.30am on all days except Friday.

She added that SCR Xpress has always been a family restaurant that has prided itself in serving quality food at the most reasonable and affordable prices and after observing that a balanced breakfast, as available in the market, was a bit too pricey and the cheaper ones didn’t have much food value, they decided to come up with a value-for-money-deal for its discerning customers.

MoH committed in providing cancer care

AROUND  600 people in Brunei were diagnosed with cancer last year. This was stated by Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, the Minister of Health, while delivering a speech at the World Cancer Day event held yesterday at The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC).

“Last year, 600 people in Brunei were told that they have cancer. One in four of us will develop it at some point in our lifetime. This disease is Brunei’s biggest killer. Many of us personally, and among our friends and families, know what it is like to experience the effects of cancer in our lives,” said the minister.

“In many ways, being diagnosed with cancer can be an overwhelming experience. Immediately all of your mental and physical resources are needed. You have to go through intensive treatments and most people experience anxiety and fear of whether or not the treatments will work and what the future will look like.”

Today on the occasion of World Cancer Day, I want to add my support and encouragement to all those affected by this disease. The officers and staff here at The Brunei Cancer Centre and the Ministry of Health (MoH) reaffirm our strong commitment to ensure that you receive the appropriate medical care and attention needed on your journey with cancer. We all hope and pray for your speedy recovery.”

The minister highlighted, however, that it is not enough to merely ensure that treatment options are available for those with cancer.

“Indeed, the theme for this year’s World Cancer Day, ‘We Can. I Can.’ demands that we go further in two key aspects of controlling this disease,” he said. “First, in prevention, and second in early detection. These two go hand-in-hand and forms the bedrock of our national strategy to reduce cancer deaths in Brunei Darussalam.”

He noted that almost half of all cancers are due to the four leading behavioural and dietary risks: Smoking, being overweight, not eating enough fruits and vegetables, and not enough physical activity.

“What does this mean? It means that we have the power to take action that reduces the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities. We can do this by practising health promoting behaviours and encouraging others to do the same. I have mentioned the concept of ‘Health is Everyone’s Business’ before, and I make no apologies for raising this important issue again.”

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the minister encouraged each and every person to make a pledge to do one or two or ideally, all of these healthy behaviours.

“Do not waste this opportunity. Start today,” he said.

The second aspect in controlling the cancer epidemic is through early detection, he said. “Diagnosing cancer isn’t always easy – not all cancers show early signs and symptoms and other warning signs appear quite late when the cancer is advanced.

“However, for a number of cancers, increasing awareness of signs and symptoms and the importance of timely treatment has been shown to improve survival. This is because finding cancer early almost always makes it easier to treat or even cure.

“For some cancers, there is robust evidence to support cancer screening,” he said. “Not everyone, however, necessarily benefits from screening but you can focus on the opportunities to intervene prior to the onset of certain cancers.”

The minister said that as the national healthcare provider, the MoH continues to improve medical services for patients, especially in ensuring that any suspected cancers are referred to the appropriate specialty in order to be diagnosed early, and start the necessary treatment in a timely manner.

This is especially well-aligned with the three strategic priorities of the MoH, which are, inculcating the concept of ‘Health is Everyone’s Business’, preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases, and delivering excellent services through alignment and consolidation.

“Alhamdulillah, the wisdom and far-sighted vision of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, has seen great strides in the country with the establishment of a number of Centres of Excellence, which include TBCC, the Heart Centre, and the Neuroscience, Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre.”

He affirmed that the MoH will continue its close collaboration with TBCC to ensure the highest standard of care is provided for cancer patients, through timely referral of patients and sharing of expertise in terms of cancer epidemiology, prevention and management.

Concluding his speech, the minister reflected on those in the community who are living with cancer. “It is a sad fact that for many people, cancer is still stigmatised as a death sentence. All of us have a responsibility to dispel the myths about cancer. It does not mark the end of who you are as an individual. It marks the beginning of difficult battles, but a battle that Insya Allah can be won.

“Those of us who know someone diagnosed with cancer should remember that it can be incredibly isolating for both patients and their families. Be supportive – if it is someone you’re close to, ask what you can do to help.

“At the end of the day, this is what World Cancer Day is about,” he added. “It’s not about research on the disease process, illness or treatment modalities – important though those may be. It’s about people – supporting those living with cancer, and preventing others from acquiring it. Let’s always remember this, and do what we can to help ourselves and those dear to us.”

LegCo member holds dialogue with students at Brunei Hall in London

THE Youth Dialogue between YB Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari, the youngest member of the new Legislative Council (LegCo), and students currently studying in the United Kingdom took place recently at Brunei Hall in London.

The event was attended by 17 students from both postgraduate and undergraduate levels, with officers from the Brunei Student’s Unit as observers.

The dialogue was also broadcast live through the Brunei Postgraduate Society’s Facebook page, with viewers interacting in real time.

YB Khairunnisa explained that as a LegCo member she would like to take the opportunity to gather a list of concerns from the students as well as recommendations that can be highlighted to other stakeholders including the ministries.

According to a press release issued by the Brunei Student Union in the UK and Ireland, the event started with a simple ice-breaking session.

YB Khairunnisa asked each participant to write their three top concerns on three separate post-it notes to be placed randomly at the centre.

Participants were then asked to stand up and see the post-its, and try to categorise them according to similar themes.

In the end, a number of themes emerged and become discussion points across the room.

They included the development of manufacturing versus service sector, the creative industry, renewable energy, tourism, professional mobility in the region, job availability and education.

From the discussions, various issues were raised and noted, along with participants’ recommendations for improvements.

One such recommendation was to improve the graduate training programme to bridge life as a student with life at work.

Iznan Tarip, a PhD candidiate from Lancaster University, highlighted how graduate training programmes and industrial placements are very competitive in the UK.

It is a good platform for students to gain relevant work experience, to top up existing skill sets and open up further opportunities for them in the future.

These programmes would also be attractive to fresh graduates looking to add more value to themselves and become more marketable.

Employers in both the private and public sectors would also benefit in terms of having more energetic manpower with fresh ideas.

They would also be able to identify potential employees in the future, which could then ease the recruitment process.

However, in Brunei, these programmes are still underdeveloped and underappreciated.

For example, governments do allow for short attachments, but these can be rigid because they only accept people taking specific courses, such as engineering and accounting.

This does not reflect the current reality, whereby nowadays, you can find engineering graduates taking jobs in finance and investment, for instance.

Opening up applications would, therefore, be more beneficial and allow for more explorations.

THE Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC) observed World Cancer Day yesterday with an event that featured a forum and exhibition.

This year’s World Cancer Day carries the theme ‘We Can. I Can.’ and the event at TBCC was attended by Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, Minister of Health, as the guest of honour who officiated the launch of proceedings.

Also present was Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Directors for TBCC as well as the Brunei Neuroscience, Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre.

Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hisham bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors for TBCC and the Brunei Neuroscience, Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre, was also in attendance.

A forum entitled ‘Forum Perdana’, which took place after the event’s launching, dealt with cancer awareness.

The session featured a panel comprising Dr Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Md Kassim, Head of the Health Promotion Centre; Dr Raden Mas Jeffri bin Raden Mas Ismail, Medical Oncology at TBCC; Dr Jamsari Khalid, Radiation Oncology at TBCC; Ustaz Haji Iskandar bin Haji Buntar, Senior Religious Teacher at TBCC, and Hajah Aminah binti Haji Mumin, Chairperson of the Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group.

Panellists of the ‘Forum Perdana’ session.

The exhibition booths, meanwhile, provided some information on cancer prevention and treatments, with various items on display, as well as health checks and light entertainment provided.

Welcoming remarks were delivered yesterday by Professor Dr Kenneth Kok Yuh Ye, the Executive Director of TBCC.

“World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to spread and raise the profile of cancer in people’s minds and in the world’s media,” he said.

“The Brunei Cancer Centre is using this occasion to bring the public, business establishments, government departments and non-profit organisations together on World Cancer Day to help the general public learn more about the different types of cancer, how to watch for it, and the treatments and preventative measures available.”

He noted that cancer is a leading cause of death around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 14 million new cancer cases are diagnosed each year, and 8.2 million people die each year from cancer worldwide. The number of new cancer cases worldwide is also rising and estimated to reach 22 million within the next two decades, he noted. “It is therefore essential to address the world’s growing cancer burden and to work on effective control measures,” he added. “World Cancer Day is a global observance that helps to raise people’s awareness of cancer and how to prevent, detect and treat it.”

He further shared that in Brunei Darussalam, the number of new cancer cases diagnosed each year is also on the rise, with breast cancer and colorectal cancer being the most common in the country for the past 15 years.

“There were 384 new cancer cases referred to and treated at The Brunei Cancer Centre in 2016, increased from 330 the year before. In 2016, we also saw an increase in the number of attendees at TBCC’s Outpatient Clinic to 10,079, an increase from 8,282 in 2015,” he said.

He went on to mention that the cancer survival rates worldwide have improved over the past few decades, thanks to research and better understanding of cancer genetics, improved surgical techniques, advancements in radiotherapy treatment, refinement in chemotherapy and newer treatment modalities, such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

He added, however, that although enormous progress is being made against cancer, much work remains.

In concluding his remarks, the executive director thanked the Health Promotion Centre at the Ministry of Health (MoH), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), the Brunei Neuroscience, Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre, Breast Cancer Support Group and Jerudong Park Medical Centre for being TBCC’s partners in the World Cancer Day 2017 event.

He also expressed his gratitude to the private companies and government departments for their generosity and support.

The Minister of Health toured the exhibition booths after the event’s launch.

In an interview with the Sunday Bulletin, he shared, “I think it is important we make sure that, particularly on World Cancer Day, we highlight cancer and, even if you are fortunate enough not to suffer from cancer, as I said before, one out of four people will be a cancer sufferer – that means there will be someone that you know.”

“So the message is to make sure we do our part to ensure that we not only support cancer patients, but also prevent cancer from occurring because like any other non-communicable diseases, it is preventable… by leading healthy lifestyles and early detections.”

“Lately, one of my biggest concerns as someone from the Ministry of Health is that we are still seeing increasingly late presentation of cancer cases,” he added.

“We are also seeing this amongst people who are highly educated and have access to care. This basically indicates to me that people are either not very aware, or that they are still very conscious and embarrassed or worried to find something bad.

“Cancer is a devastating diagnosis, but at the end of the day there is always something that can be done for it. So if you come early, your chances of cure or survival is much, much higher… Even if someone has advanced disease and the likelihood of a cure is not so good, there are many other treatments and modalities that can be given to ensure that we can prolong their life and ensure they have the highest quality of life. So it is something not to be given up on.”

HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC), presented Olympic pins to three Bruneians who participated in the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil last year.

His Royal Highness was greeted upon arrival by Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah by Pehin Khatib Dato Paduka Haji Emran bin Haji Kunchang followed by the presentation of Olympic pins to athletes Mohd Fakhri bin Ismail and Maizurah binti Abdul Rahim and badminton player Jaspar Yu Woon Chai.

The ceremony concluded with group photo session with the President of BDNOC.

In the previous London Olympic Games 2012, the pins were presented to the athletes in London during the games itself.

This time at the Rio Olympic Games 2016, the participant pins were delivered to BDNOC by the International Olympic Council (IOC) and IOC requested for a simple presentation ceremony to be organised by the BDNOC.

Olympians are thanked for participating in the games and congratulated on their achievements. Competing at the Olympic Games is a unique experience. As Olympians, they are a role model with the capacity to unite and influence people from around the world, the BDNOC said in a statement which was read out during the ceremony.

“Keep that Olympic spirit alive and uphold the Olympic values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship. Every country recognises Olympic participant pins, and athletes are reminded to proudly wear this pin everywhere they go,” the statement added.

In an interview with the Sunday Bulletin, 100-metre sprinter Mohd Fakhri said he felt honoured to receive the pin from His Royal Highness.

“Right now, I am focusing my attention on the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to be held in Malaysia this year, the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 as well as the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. I am satisfied with my performance at the Olympic Games in Rio last year as I managed to go to the next round. It is a good experience to compete with the top athletes around the world,” Mohd Fakhri added.

Meanwhile, 200-metre runner Maizurah said she plans to change her event from 200-metre sprint which she participated in Rio to heptathlon which comprises seven events including jumping, throwing and hurdles.

“I hope to compete in the Philippines Open in April this year before the SEA Games. With the next Olympics in three years’ time, I pray to be able to compete and put up more efforts.

“I am not satisfied with my performance in Rio. But I did my best. My strength was actually in long distance run and I only had nine months to prepare for the 200-metre run prior to the Rio Olympics,” she said.

Badminton player Jaspar Yu Woon Chai said, “It is very nice to get this special pin, but we should not take it for granted but continue to work harder.

“At this moment, I am taking one step at a time and there are a few targets along the year. Now I am working on my skills including for the upcoming SEA Games. But it is still early to say whether I will be going to the SEA Games as we are in the process of selection. At this moment, I am also concentrating on the Commonwealth Games in 2018. After 2018, If I feel good, I will look forward to the Olympic Games in Tokyo which is still too far away.

“I am okay with the recent Olympic Games in Rio but I could have done better. If I am given another chance, I will definitely do better,” he said.

Also in attendance at the pin handing over ceremony were Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS); Haji Mohd Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the MCYS; members of the BDNOC, the athlete selection and assessment committee and the National Sports Association as well as parents and families of the athletes.
