DART Logistics Sdn Bhd has recorded close to 7,000 downloads of the Dart app after one month of operation, with almost 100 completed rides and over 300 individuals expressing interest in becoming Dart car drivers.

The figures, released by Dart dounder and Chief Executive Officer Zul ‘Amali bin Dato Paduka Haji Idris, shows how the market is responding positively to the transportation network industry.

“We have received great response from the public, especially from those curious about our services. We have surpassed our monthly target of 5,000 downloads and are hoping that it will grow within the next few months when we introduce new services and promotions,” he said.

“What we are proposing is recognised as innovation and moving forward from the conventional way of ride-booking services, which is via call or messaging. Our smartphone platform serves to fill the gaps of transportation needs – for both corporate and personal needs,” he said.

Not limited to only booking for taxi services, Dart has cast its sight on providing additional services such as Dart Car, courier services and ticketing in the near future.

“Dart is going to widen its scope of services. We are not limited to taxi-booking services. We aim to solve transportation need issues,” Zul’Amali added.Dart Brunei

Dart’s new services will mean the recruitment of drivers in the coming weeks.

“We are providing ease and convenience to the Brunei public, allowing them to move around in a safe, affordable way. Our aim is to be Brunei’s safest and trusted transportation option. The public can travel in confidence with a trusted driver and secure payment gateway that enables them to do an initial one-time payment entry for a seamless experience,” he added.

With the hopes of reducing unemployment, the Dart Car service will be provided with partnered private drivers. Potential drivers will need to be screened before going through the co-developed Land Transport Department (JPD) – Dart Driver Training programme to become a licensed Dart driver.

THE Asean Youth Summit (AYS) 2017 was recently held in the Philippines, under the concept of ‘Strength in Diversity, Building One Asean Community’.

The summit gave youth participants the opportunity to understand decision-making processes and diplomatic procedures involved in actual Asean meetings.

The four-day event included simulations of ministerial meeting and Asean Community Councils, panel discussions and conferences that were aimed at giving the future leaders and decision-makers a chance to understand the role of Asean, while discussing key ideas and issues ranging from political-security and socio-cultural affairs in relation to real world problems.

Nur Faizah binti Ja’afar and Nur Diyana Nasriah binti Suhaili, both majoring in Business Administration at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), shared their experiences of participating in the Asean Youth Summit.

“Despite the many differences, including language barrier and social differences, we managed to work together as a cohesive group,” said Nur Faizah.

“It was an intensive session, where we assumed roles as the representatives of various Asean member countries and deliberated on possible applicable solutions to existing social, economical and political issues in the Asean region,” she added.

“It was an interesting moment for both of us,” Nur Diyana Nasriah said, adding, “For the first time, we were given such a huge responsibility of assuming the role of a representative to an Asean member country completely different from ours; and to work together with other first-time participants towards finding viable solutions for all Asean member countries.”

“AYS taught us that despite our numerous differences, we have the same collective Asean identity in the same Asean Community,” she added.

Nine youth leaders took part in the summit, organised by the De Le Salle University, in conjunction with Asean’s 50th anniversary.

Participants discussed a wide range of topics, including the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapons-Free Zone, the Asean Free Trade Area, transnational crime, tourism, science and technology, education and disaster management.

TWO Bruneian participants in the Memorisation and Understanding of Al-Quran Competition for MABIMS member countries 1438 Hijrah made their country proud when they were announced as the winners of their respective categories, during the National Level Nuzul Al-Quran celebration ceremony last Sunday, at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

In an interview with the champion of the Juzuk 10 Memorisation and Understanding of Juzuk 8 category (20 years and below), Ainaa Zahirah binti Haji Abdul Manap, the fourth of seven children, said that she was honoured to represent Brunei in the competition.

“I would like to thank Allah the Almighty for my success; my parents for their endless support; my Al-Quran teacher, Ustazah Wardah, who has been teaching me for these past five years; and my other teachers, friends and family members for their prayers,” she said.

“At first I was unsure whether I should take part in the competition, since representing my own country is such a huge responsibility. In the end, my parents convinced me to join, so that I would be more confident about reciting before an audience.”

Ainaa Zahirah said she prepared for the competition by improving on her recitation skills together with her teachers. She would go over her recitation several times throughout the day, while memorising the understanding of Juzuk 8.

Ainaa Zahirah was also the first-place winner in Category C of the Al-Quran Memorisation Competition in 2013.

The Diploma in ‘Aliyah Qiraat student from Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah advises aspiring contestants to constantly recite from the holy book.

“The next step in my plans is to improve on my recitation skills until 30 Juzuks, as well as participating on a higher level in the competition, if Allah the Almighty wills it,” she said.

Meanwhile, the other participant, Muhammad Hazri bin Haji Mohammad Hamzani, took first place in the Juzuk 30 Memorisation and Understanding of Juzuk 22 (30 years and below) category.

Also a Diploma in ‘Aliyah Qiraat student at Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Muhammad Hazri said that he prepared for the competition by reciting diligently with his teachers, while praying for success.

“At first I was very nervous to be reciting before a large number of people, but praised be Allah the Almighty, I was able to overcome this obstacle,” he said.

“I feel most relieved and delighted for my success in this competition, which was unexpected.”

For to those eager to take part in similar competitions, Muhammad Hazri advises them to go over their recitation on a regular basis, to improve their memorisation of the Quran.

The MABIMS Member Nations’ Al-Quran Memorisation Competition 1438 Hijrah was held on June 9-10 at the ICC, which saw participation from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Bruneians lose money as forex firm gets pounded

BRUNEIANS continue to lose money in forex trading schemes even after repeated warnings from authorities against associating with such speculative operations.

Depositors from the Sultanate are among customers of a money game operator which is currently in dire straits as a result of heavy losses in foreign exchange trading, Malaysian media reported yesterday.

Other depositors come from countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Australia and Hong Kong.

The Penang-based company, the fourth such game operator in the state to come under the spotlight recently, took a bad hit after the pound dived following the shocking British election results on Friday.

“Two of our top fund managers suffered about 95 per cent losses this week to the tune of several hundred million Malaysian ringgits. This is a huge blow to the company,” said a supporter of the company.

Although his upline had told him to wait for further announcements from the company, he was not convinced the mess could be sorted out that easily.

“Things sure don’t look good. I have about RM50,000 in the scheme since two years ago,” he said.

The company, which was started in 2012, has the largest base in Malaysia at 55 per cent, followed by China at 19 per cent.

The minimum investment is $100 (RM420) with the promise of a passive monthly return of between 10 per cent and 30 per cent.

Members can earn a five per cent referral commission on funds invested by their recruits and opt for pips rebate or profit sharing.

A 51-year-old businesswoman from Tanjong Bungah said she invested about RM220,000 in the scheme last year.

“I started with RM50,000 last January and topped up the amount gradually,” she said.

Early this year, the company announced on its website that it was in partnership with English Premier League club, West Bromwich Albion FC, she said.

“It has been around for five years and was doing so well before this.

“Many people, including a lot of my friends, will get burnt if the company goes bust,” she said.

This is a potential fourth setback in money game schemes for her after JJPTR, Richway Global Venture and CYL collapsed one by one.

“The companies collapsed in just less than two months. It’s like a chain reaction,” she said.

A self-employed victim said he is keeping his fingers crossed that everything would be fine. He first invested $1,000 (RM4,200) in January, and earned $300 (RM1,260) by March. It was then that he topped up another $1,000.

“The scheme looks convincing. We can even set our limit of investment losses by percentage. For example, if your investment is RM4,200 and you set 30 per cent as the limit, then the most you stand to lose is only RM1,260. And the fund managers did really well, until recently when the losses came up to about 90 per cent. I just hope we do not have to bear the losses. Just pay us the balance based on the limit of losses that we set,” he said.

Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) regularly reminds the public to be careful when participating in any financial schemes or transactions. In a recent statement, AMBD advised them not to be easily enticed by any investment advertisements and to conduct due diligence and check the legitimacy of such individuals/companies as well as the inherent risks associated before agreeing into any financial transactions.

If the company is based outside Brunei Darussalam, investors need to check with the overseas authorities about its credentials, urged the financial regulator.

Brunei paddlers swept aside in Singapore meet

BRUNEI table tennis paddlers got off to a bad start in the 23rd Southeast Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships 2017 after the junior boys’ team fell to an emphatic 3-0 3-0 3-0 defeat to Singapore in the opening day at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall in Singapore yesterday.

The trio Abdul Wafi Suhardi, Jason Koh and Awangku Md Sufi Fakrullah Abdullah bin Pengiran Md Sufian were convincingly dispatched by their Singaporean counterparts in the junior level tournament.

Singapore hurried towards the first set with Brunei’s Abdul Wafi Suhardi on the receiving end of an 11-1 11-8 11-2 humbling by the imperious Ethan.

However, Abdul Wafi showed fight in the second set and trimmed a 4-0 deficit to trail by within two points.

The Singaporean’s aggressive play armed with precise shot-making qualities proved a bridge too for the luckless Abdul Wafi in the final set in a repeat of the first.

Lucas Tan of Singapore put his team in the driving seat after making light work of Jason Koh winning in straight sets 11-1 11-2 11-7.

Kun Ting compounded Brunei’s misery after beating Awangku Md Sufi in straight sets 11-2 11-8 11-1.

Like Abdul Wafi, Awangku Md Sufi fared better in the penultimate set showing his attacking vigour and forcing his opponent into committing errors as the score reads 6-5 in favour of the Singaporean.

Awangku Md Sufi missed a chance to bring the score level to 7-7 when he struck his shot wide before missing the court during his opponent’s serve.

The Bruneian junior provided his shot of the set after his return kissed the tip of the court to net a well-earned point.

But Kun Ting responded with a smashing volley of his own before reaching match point with a miss from Awangku Md Sufi verifying the confirmation of the second set.

It was no match for Awangku Md Sufi in the final set as the unstoppable Singaporean powered to a 10-0 lead and the Bruneian’s solitary point merely delayed the inevitable.

Other results included losing 3-0 3-0 3-0 identically to both Indonesia and Thailand.

Brunei ended bottom of Group ‘A’ without a win and a game to their name with Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia occupying the top three.

Meanwhile, the junior girls’ team comprising Leong Yi, Fiona Hii and Hong Hui Qin fell to a similar score-line with the boys’ against the same opponents.

The junior girls team finished at the bottom of Group ‘A’ losing two matches without a game and a win to their name with the other loss coming against Indonesia.

The Brunei Cadet Boys did not have the same luck too as they went down to a 3-0 3-0 3-0 defeat to the Malaysia Cadet Boys.

Organised by the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) and sanctioned by the Southeast Asian Table Tennis Association (SEATTA), the tournament saw a return to Singapore which previously hosted in 2002.

The winners and runners-up of the team events will qualify for the 2017 Asian Junior Championships to be held in Ansan, South Korea from June 29 to July 4.

SOME 21 ladies from the Brunei Darussalam Amateur Softball and Baseball Association (BASBA) will compete in the 2017 Masters Fastpitch Softball Tournament at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand from July 20-23.

The team will be led by Zaitul Rasinah binti Haji Mohd Zaidi as the Team Manager, Mardinata bin Haji Suhaili as the Head Coach and Assistant Coach Pengiran Mohd Ashraf bin Pengiran Ahmad Damit.

In an interview with the Bulletin, Zaitul said the team has been preparing since early this year but started training intensively since April every Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

“We organised weekly friendly matches every week with other ladies teams especially on Sundays at the Softball Pitch at the Jerudong Sports Complex.

“This sport requires agility in body and foot movement, so stamina is one of the biggest factors for each athlete. We emphasised players to do more fitness activities and encouraged them to practice a healthy diet.

Commenting on their previous achievements, the team manager said, “We had the biggest achievement last year winning the bronze medal in the Masters Tournament in Jakarta. We will try our best to retain or get better results this year.

“We have new potential players this year, so by combining them with experienced players, I believe we can achieve more. I can see potential from game plays from the past few months and I am confident that our team can go against other Asean teams in Bangkok soon.

“Japan and Hong Kong will also be participating in this tournament and there are high chances they will be represented by their senior players.

“But I am confident that our Brunei Ladies Masters can perform their best, with their high spirits, sacrificing their time, money and sweat to make this a fruitful journey and make their country proud.”

Shaping a generation of movers and shakers

THE recently-held 24th LiveWIRE Leadership Camp saw the involvement of 43 participants comprising Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) students, graduates of various LiveWIRE programmes, and aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs.

The three-day exploration programme, aimed at inculcating leadership values within individuals, was held at Trandie Marina Resorts in the Temburong District.

Working from the concept of ‘transforming’ rather than ‘changing’ a person, the programme hoped to create a ‘Community of Practice’ approach, according to Pengiran Redzuan bin Pengiran Haji Abbas, LiveWIRE Brunei Programme Director and Lead Facilitator for the Leadership Camp programme.

He added the programme also aimed to eliminate the Bruneian mindset of “I couldn’t care less”.

“If Bruneian leaders are like that, then their followers will be fearful,” he said. (At the camp), we don’t try to change people since people (by nature) don’t want to change. So instead we attempt to transform them,” Pengiran Redzuan said, emphasising the concept of unity among the participants.

Participants were exposed to the natural elements and characteristics that make up a leader through theoretical and practical sessions spaced out during the ‘55 hours away from home’ programme, as referred to by LiveWIRE.

During the theoretical sessions, Pengiran Redzuan and LiveWIRE Senior Business Counsellor Mohd Fadhilullah Tudun bin Haji Hassan shared with the participants renowned psychological concepts from Joseph Luft, Harry Ingham’s Johari Window, and Abraham Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of Needs.’

Participants were also made to look back on situations from their pasts, and asked where they could apply such concepts into practice in the future.

Meanwhile, the practical session included a day-long jungle trek and obstacle course where participants were monitored by supervisors for how well they were able to lead and motivate others, as well as how they performed as team players.

Pengiran Redzuan said he chose Temburong for the leadership camp because he wanted to bring participants into a “different environment”, while giving them the chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the place.

Another LiveWIRE programme, the Business Plan Series (BPS) workshop, was held earlier the month, involving 28 participants from DARe (Darussalam Enterprise).

Mohd Fadhilullah, the programme facilitator, explained that the aim of the BPS workshop is to provide participants with the tools and techniques for writing a viable business plan.

Mohamad Fadhilullah said that though the BPS workshop participants typically comprise individuals who have participated in the LiveWIRE Business Plan Awards competition, the workshop is also open to the public.

He added that the knowledge gained from creating a business plan is not just useful for the competition, but can also be applied by participants when sharing their business ideas with investors or used to start their own businesses.

Mohamad Fadhilullah had previously participated in several business plan competitions including the LiveWIRE Business Plan Awards.

Meanwhile, this will also be the 7th consecutive year that LiveWIRE will be involved in the Ramadhan stalls – a month-long annual charity bazaar organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and partaken by LiveWIRE Brunei Business Network (LWBN) graduate entrepreneurs to gain valuable hands-on experience on the day-to-day running of a stall business.

Stalls set up next to the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium (located at K25 and K26) and along Jalan Bendahara in front of the Royal Regalia building (stalls number 64 to 69) will be selling an array of local delicacies, snacks, treats and tidbits.

MEMBERS of the Britain Brunei Business Forum (BBBF), along with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MoFAT) and local educational establishments attended a talk pertaining to Halal products and their production by Ghanim International Corporation which trades as ‘bruneihalalfoods’.

The talk held at The Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong saw Dr Nur Rahman, CEO of Ghanim International Corporation explaining the broader term of Halal, that does not only apply to food, but also to a broader range of products such as cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.

He explained that a thorough certification process ensures that cross-contamination is avoided. He also explained that Halal products can be produced anywhere, provided that the proper certification process has been carried out as required by the Brunei Islamic Religious Council and by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA).

He added that the process will include a minimum of two trained and certified Muslims controlling the production process and said that bruneihalalfoods thus has a huge potential and can open up new markets for its products as well as creating new jobs in the economy.

Dr Nur Rahman said that because bruneihalalfoods uses only natural ingredients in its products, they contain no harmful additives.

He shared that chicken goujons contain 100 per cent chicken meat and consequently have lower fat content. For those conscious about health and diet (especially those suffering from diabetes, hypertension or heart disease) bruneihalalfoods offers products such as sugar replacement (Provia) made from natural ingredients and low sodium salt (nutrisal). The lower sugar, salt and fat content of bruneihalalfoods products means reduced risk of medical problems.

Dr Nur Rahman said the company manufactures and sells to the United Kingdom and is about to export to Middle East markets from its Birmingham factory.

William Martin, Chairman of BBBF commented, “Dr Nur Rahman’s presentation provided a valuable and informed insight not only into Halal products, but their health benefits as well as the brand’s potential for supporting economies around the world.”

OFFICERS on board the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) ship, KDB Afiat on patrol during early Monday morning rescued five local fishermen who were adrift at sea.

The fishermen were stranded 10 nautical miles northeast from Champion Oilfield after their boat suffered an engine failure.

The RBN ship was on patrol when it received the report of the stranded boat at 1.32am.

KDB Afiat initiated a search and rescue mission and successfully located the fishermen at 2am. All five locals were in good health when they were rescued.

Their boat was towed back to Muara and the fishermen were handed over to the Marine Police of the Royal Brunei Police Force at 5.30am.

The rescue was the second successful operation by the RBN ship. On June 5, three local fishermen who were also adrift at sea were rescued by KDB Afiat, two nautical miles off the Tutong shore.

Blood heroes

BLOOD donors are heroes who have been hailed for giving the gift of life.

A total of 13,037 blood donors came forward across Brunei Darussalam last year, including 3,495 new registered donors.

Despite this number, the country faces the challenge of inadequate blood supply. More blood donors are invited to come forward and become regular donors to ensure that the blood banks’ supply is sufficient, safe and sustainable.

This was highlighted by the Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi in his message on the occasion of World Blood Donors Day which carries the theme ‘What Can You Do? Give Blood. Give Now. Give Often’.

Blood donation is one of the most vital social services to the humankind. A normal and healthy person can easily donate blood many times between 18 and 60 years, he said.

Through blood donation, we can help various needy people and save their precious lives. A single blood donation can save three lives. No matter how science and technology advances, to date, attempts made by scientists to develop artificial blood have not been successful, the minister added.

“Additionally, donating blood can help burn your calories and also prevent iron overloading in the blood. A reduction of the iron level in the body is linked to low cancer risk. Regular blood donation can reduce your risk of getting non-communicable diseases such as heart ailments and cancer,” the message noted.

Touching on the theme for this year’s World Blood Donors Day, the minister said it focusses on blood donation in emergencies.

“In a crisis or an emergency situation, the natural human response is ‘What can I do? How can I help?’ Blood loss resulting from traumatic injuries can lead to deaths. We would not want to wait until disaster strikes to donate blood. Being prepared is the way to go, so that those in need will have an increased chance of survival.”

The minister’s message further noted that the Ministry of Health (MoH) aims to support and strengthen health services’ capacity for preparedness and response to emergencies, including the ability to ensure adequate supply to fulfil the demand for blood and blood products for blood transfusion on patients requiring emergency medical care.

“The Blood Donation Centre and blood banks in hospitals in all districts provide blood donation services in a comfortable and pleasant environment through a safe blood management system. We also continuously work with our partners in other government agencies, educational institutions, uniformed forces, the private sector and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to coordinate blood donation campaigns in the country.

“The global objective of today’s World Blood Donor Day is very much relevant and well-aligned to the MoH’s strategic priorities – which are to drive the ‘Health is everyone’s business’ agenda, enhance the quality of service delivery and prevent and control non-communicable diseases,” the minister said.

“Every blood donor is a hero to all who receive the blood. Alhamdulillah, their blood donation is an incredible gift of life. The blood you give is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments.

“In appreciation to the regular blood donations, the MoH would like to congratulate, honour and thank the efforts of the voluntary unpaid blood donors including our generation of young heroes who have courageously started to donate blood at the age of 17. Your donation is a life-saving donation,” the minister concluded.

BURGER King Brunei, under the management of Sinofood Express, yesterday held a presentation of gifts for the students of the Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei, at the SMARTER Early Development Growth and Enabling (EDGE) Centre in Kampong Mata-Mata.

Lim Kai Wei, the Marketing Manager of Burger King Brunei, gave away 60 goodie bags of food and toys to the children of SMARTER Brunei.

Meanwhile, Deno Goh, the Operations Director of Burger King Brunei and the Burger King Brunei staff, presented a cheque for $2,000 to Malai Haji Abdullah bin Malai Haji Othman, the CEO and President of SMARTER Brunei.

In his speech, Malai Haji Abdullah thanked Burger King Brunei and expressed the hope for future collaborations between them. He also announced events, such as a car boot sale at the Brunei Tennis Club and a musical performance by the children of SMARTER Brunei in December.

Sinofood Express introduced a corporate social responsibility programme in 2015, with the installation of donation boxes at every outlet. The collected funds were handed over to three non-profit organisations – SMARTER Brunei, Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam and the Children’s Cancer Foundation (Yaska).

For every $1 donated by Burger King’s customers, Sinofood Express has taken the initiative to match the contributions with the collection fund. As a result, $6,000 was raised, with donations of $2,000 each going to the charity organisations.
