FOLLOWING five car accidents within a day across the country last Monday which also led to one fatality, the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) advised road users to adopt a more cautious and prudent attitude while driving.

Brunei is witnessing frequent road accidents of late due to the uncertain weather conditions with especially continual rains, Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, told the media yesterday, in his capacity as the Chairman of the NRSC.

The Bulletin reported yesterday that a local man was killed in a road accident in Kampong Kiudang in the Tutong District when the car he was driving crashed into a road divider before landing in the Sungai Simut in the village.

A passenger in the vehicle sustained injuries. Initial investigations by the Tutong Police Station found that the road was wet during the time of the accident.

Meanwhile, a local mother and her 10-year-old son were rushed to Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in the Belait District for treatment after the vehicle they were travelling veered off the road and landed in a drain along Jalan Anduki.

Haji Azhar added that for the safety of all road users, motorists are reminded to be more responsible while driving by adhering to traffic rules and to be always cautious especially when it is raining and while driving on waterlogged roads.

Motorists are also warned that they should pay attention while passing through risk areas such as U-turns, narrow streets and accident prone areas.

“In uncertain weather conditions, we need to make sure the vehicle is in good condition including ensuring the vehicle’s tyres are not bald and not modified. One should also recite prayers before commencing the journey,” the permanent secretary said.

The NRSC urged all motorists and passengers to always wear safety belts. They are also advised not to use mobile phones while on the road.

All these practices and advices should be followed not only while driving in this country, but also in neighbouring countries.

On the issue of images of car accidents making rounds in the social media on Monday, Haji Azhar urged netizens to respect the victims and their family members and avoid making assumptions on the accidents.

“Ethics must be upheld and we should not expose the victim. We have to show a responsible behaviour,” he said.

Haji Azhar also said car dealers also play a crucial role in teaching drivers on road safety. Customers should be made aware of the specifications of the cars they buy, especially those with high capacity and capability.

Also present at the event was Dr Haji Supry bin Haji Awang Ladi, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications.

Mega Leap: UBD ranked 105 in QS Asian Ranking

UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is now ranked 105 in Asia in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings, up from 123 last year. This makes UBD one of the fastest rising universities in Asia, moving from 171-180 in 2014, 118 in 2015, to its highest position to date at 105. With almost 12,000 universities in Asia, UBD is now among the top one per cent of universities in Asia.

UBD broke into the QS Asian University Rankings in 2014. Prior to that, UBD was an unranked university. Less rigorous ranking exercises placed UBD in the 2,500 to 3,500 range.

UBD performed particularly well in several of the key indicators of teaching, being top 20 in Asia in five categories – 20th in international students, 11th in international faculty and 11th in faculty-student ratio. UBD did particularly well in international exchange, ranked number one in Asia for both inbound and outbound students.

Regarded as one of the most influential and reliable university rankings in the world, QS compares leading universities based on six performance indicators and assesses their performance across four areas – research, teaching, employability and internationalisation.

As part of the ranking exercise, QS measures research productivity. Research activity in UBD has increased exponentially, with the number of papers being published growing annually. The number of papers published by UBD staff in top international journals went from just 57 papers in 2008 to as high as 324 in 2016. The impact of UBD’s research is also growing – from only 633 citations in 2008 to over 2,700 citations in 2016.

UBD provides a supportive and conducive environment for academics and students to enable and enhance the teaching and learning as well as research activities
The Centre for Advanced Materials and Energy Sciences (CAMES) provides a platform for researchers from various fields to come together to conceptualise ideas and find solutions to problems pertaining to energy and advanced materials, collaborating closely with government and private agencies as well as local industries. – PHOTOS: UBD
As researchers, both academics and students encounter novel solutions that can have massive impact globally. The 36 PhD graduates this year is a testament to growing interest in research among Bruneians and the trust from international students in UBD’s infrastructure, facilities, expertise and support as they pursue an even deeper understanding of their fields

For the first time, UBD is ranked as a “high” research intensive university this year. In its research strategic plan, UBD in addition to basic research, focusses on areas that will have an economic and social impact for the country and on key research niches relevant to Brunei Darussalam, including Energy Studies, Biodiversity and the Environment, Agro-technology, Islamic Studies, including Islamic Governance and Asian Studies.

Research is a significant contributor to Brunei’s economic progress and shared welfare as emphasised by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Chancellor of UBD, in the monarch’s titah at the university’s 29th Convocation Ceremony in 2017. In the titah, His Majesty wished to see UBD produce more research and advised universities must plan holistically to achieve their targets and involve themselves in strategic planning processes.

UBD’s growing list of collaborations with agencies, academic institutions and industries, both within Brunei Darussalam and abroad, has helped develop its teaching capabilities, publication output and research impact. Its partnerships with top peer universities in the world have paved the way for better staff and student exchanges. With its growing international reputation, UBD is fast realising its vision of becoming a “world class” university.

Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Abdul Aziz, the Vice-Chancellor of UBD said, “Alhamdulillah, we have done well in the QS rankings exercise, particularly on indicators of teaching and learning. This has always been the focus of the university, to prepare graduates who are ‘future ready’, who are relevant for the workplace, and who will contribute to the economic development of the country.”

She added, “UBD continuously seeks to produce highly employable graduates who will be innovative future leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset.”

UBD also promotes lifelong learning where graduates are encouraged to continue pursuing knowledge that can add value to their existing skill sets. The holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to education and personal development is integral in preparing them to bring Brunei Vision 2035 into fruition.

The year 2017 has been a very good year for UBD. In June, for the first time UBD broke into the QS World University Rankings, coming in at 349th, placing the Brunei’s prestigious university among the top 1.3 per cent of universities worldwide. Also in July, for the first time in its history, UBD made the QS Top 50 under 50 rankings, ranked 37th in the world for universities founded less than 50 years ago.

Established only 32 years ago as Brunei Darussalam’s first national university, UBD is relatively young but is rapidly gaining an international reputation in higher education circles.

Stay creative in producing employable graduates, says Deputy Permanent Secretary

IT IS critical for universities as well as vocational and technical education institutions to ensure that their graduates are competent, innovative and effective.

This was stated by Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education (MoE) at the opening ceremony of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) CoNECT Fair 2017 yesterday.

He congratulated UBD on its achievement in the 2018 QS Asia University Rankings, saying the rise in the rankings is testament to the university’s aspiration to continue to excel in teaching and learning, research and service to the community.

He said one of the indicators used in the rankings is that of ‘employee reputation’, which accounts for 20 per cent – a sizeable proportion to the regional rankings, second only to academic reputation. Data for this metric is obtained from a survey which asks employers to identify those institutions from which they source the most competent, innovative and effective graduates.

Dr Haji Azman highlighted that this criteria reflects the importance of employability and employment prospects for today’s university applicants and graduates.

“While it is important for universities and vocational and technical education institutions to ensure their initiatives are aligned towards reaching the target of our national KPI 1.6, which is the graduation rate, the MoE considers it critical for these institutions, including UBD, to ensure that their graduates are competent, innovative and effective,” he said.

Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, speaking at the opening ceremony of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) CoNECT Fair 2017 yesterday. – RAHWANI ZAHARI

“We need to ensure our education system stays relevant to the national goal of increasing the percentage of professionals and skilled workforce required to support the country’s economic growth as well as to reduce unemployment.

“Therefore, this may require them (universities and vocational and technical education institutions) to be more creative in designing their curriculum, offering high value programmes, always at the forefront of innovative teaching, learning and research, and adaptable to changes and challenges,” he continued. “At the end of the day, our desire is to produce graduates who are marketable, employable and job-ready.”

Dr Haji Azman stated that, “As a world-ranked institution, UBD has steadily provided and supported its students and alumni with several avenues to assist them in achieving certain skills pertaining to their respective programmes, more so in today’s context.”

This, he noted, is done through joint collaborations with numerous stakeholders and agencies encompassing curriculum development, Discovery Year placements, competitions as well as career talks and clinics organised by UBD’s CoNECT (Centre of Networking, Employment and Career Training).

He said the centre’s newly improved web portal grants students access to an array of relevant career-related material, provides advice on their chosen career, as well
as plan their career journey using the Career Passport feature at the click of a button.

Additionally, the centre organised the current career fair to offer its students a platform to increase their professional network in their career development journey and entrepreneurship.

“I applaud UBD for organising this fair, which aims to continue to connect students and job seekers with industry professionals from various sectors,” he said. “It is also a platform which I hope will encourage and strengthen collaborations between the university and its alumni, the public as well as the private agencies in addressing the unemployment issue or skills gap among graduates in this country.”

He said the fair allows the industry and employers to give their feedback to UBD and other higher education institutions in Brunei Darussalam of the qualities and skills needed in the current as well as future job market.

“I understand the focus of this year’s fair includes UBD’s commitment to promote lifelong learning through the provision of innovative approaches to pursue and apply beneficial knowledge for its graduates and public to remain relevant in the global market. This can be seen from the involvement of UBD’s relevant offices and centres, such as C3L (Centre for Lifelong Learning), in the fair’s exhibitions where I am sure visitors can learn more about these opportunities.

“I am also pleased to learn that there is an increase in the number of participants from government agencies, private sector and industry in this year’s fair,” he said. “On this note, I urge UBD to continue its active collaboration and cooperation with the relevant stakeholders.

“As this is a starting point for the career development of our young generation, it is important to prepare and empower them as a crucial human resource for the current and future development of the country,” he highlighted.

Addressing students and graduates, he said, “I encourage you all to take the most out of this fair by exploring all exhibits and investing a little bit more time interacting with the participating employers and recruiters as they could well be your employer if
not now, perhaps in the near future.

“Find out what current employment opportunities are available and gain an understanding and insight of the scope of these sectors,” he added.

“InsyaAllah, this will assist you in making more informed decisions in choosing your career pathways sutured to your interests and aspirations and at the same time contributing towards the realisation of Brunei Vision 2035.”

THE German Embassy in Brunei Darussalam hosted a dinner reception to mark the occasion of the Day of German Unity at Indera Kayangan Ballroom, The Empire Hotel & Country Club yesterday.

The guest of honour was Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Bahrin bin Abdullah, Minister of Development accompanied by his spouse Pengiran Datin Hajah Noorsiah binti Pengiran Hamdan.

Peter Hermann Wolff, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Brunei Darussalam in his welcoming remarks lauded the $1.8-million project between Brunei Fertilizer Industries and ThyssenKrupp, a German engineering company that recently sealed a deal to construct an urea fertiliser plant at Sungai Liang Industrial Park.

He believed it will spur more interest among other German companies to take a closer look at the opportunities Brunei has to offer.

“This industrial project adds a new and very important element to Germany’s bilateral economic relation with Brunei,” he said before acknowledging the guest of honour as one of the Bruneian co-signers for the important contract.

According to the ambassador, the project will start production in early 2020 and will make use of Bruneian offshore gas as well as providing work for hundreds of Bruneians.

The project will represent an “important step forward” in the economic diversification strategy of the Brunei Government.

He also commented on the “relatively small, yet well-established” presence of German companies in the Sultanate, most noticeable the German makers of premium cars.

The ambassador acknowledged that Lufthansa, a German company with possibly the longest presence in Brunei, has been servicing the planes of His Majesty the Sultan’s Flight and also providing pilots for 32 years. Wolff elaborated on other established German companies in Brunei involving in the field of medical technology, shipyard and cement.

He lauded the peace and stability achieved in Brunei, including the enormous strides the nation has made in its economic and social development.

He also congratulated the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.

The reception began with the national anthems of both countries, followed by the anthem for the European Union before the customary cake-cutting ceremony and a presentation of souvenirs to the minister and spouse.

Also present were members of the Diplomatic Corps, government officials, and the German community in Brunei.

The Day of German Unity is the national day of Germany, celebrated on October 3.

Lack of public awareness posing a big challenge to insurance industry

|     Azlan Othman     |

ONE of the major challenges faced by the insurance industry is the lack of awareness of the people about it, said Yusof bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Managing Director of Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD), at the opening of the Insurance and Takaful Day yesterday at The Mall in Gadong.

“This year’s theme of the day, ‘Know Your Insurance or Takaful’, conveys a very simple yet powerful message. It is undoubtedly a very important reminder, not just to customers and Takaful and insurance providers, but also to the society at large.

“For customers, it emphasises the need to promote their empowerment with information and knowledge regarding the ins and outs of their insurance policy or Takaful certificate so that it will satisfy them that they have obtained the most appropriate protection and level of coverage that suit their needs.

“It also means that they know beforehand what is expected of them and what they can expect from their insurance or Takaful provider should they need to make a claim,” said Awang Yusof said.

“A study on the Takaful and insurance industry, undertaken by AMBD at the end of 2016, has found that customers place great importance on the need to understand the product through interacting with intermediaries or direct sales channels before making a decision to purchase life insurance or family Takaful.

The guest of honour, Yusof bin Haji Abdul Rahman (seated 5R), Managing Director of AMBD and Haji Osman bin Haji Mohd Jair, Chairman of BITA (4R) in a group photo. – BAHIYAH BAKIR

“This, in turn, means that insurance and Takaful providers should provide the necessary tools to help empower their customers and inculcate trust in their services. This could include simplifying their sales processes, spending a few extra minutes with their customers to ensure the customer is well informed of the products and services on offer, following-up with customers and confirming that they understand their insurance policy or Takaful certificate well.”

Yusof also said for the society, the theme means empowering individuals and businesses with the understanding that insurance and Takaful play an integral part in their lives. Without motor insurance or Takaful, motorists would not be able to drive their cars on the road.

“This would also mean that public transportation and the logistics industry would not be able to work efficiently without insurance. Many professionals, such as doctors, lawyers or consultants, would not be able to carry out their jobs without worry if there is no professional indemnity insurance.

“We now see a growing trend in Brunei Darussalam of people using courier services and postal services to send and receive goods from abroad. Would these people and businesses be willing to send or receive goods from unseen parties without the comfort or protection of insurance or Takaful in case the goods get lost in transit, or against the seller’s or buyer’s fraud? These are just some of the examples of how Takaful and insurance can play a crucial role in our everyday lives without us knowing so.”

Yusof added that AMBD places high importance on consumer education and financial inclusion. “We support the ambition of the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to nurture a savings culture among Bruneians.

“The Total Debt Service Ratio (TDSR) measure is an example of this. AMBD has also been embarking on a series of awareness campaigns on financial services spanning banking, credit bureau, capital markets and insurance, with the intention to raise awareness.

“At the same time, it is of great importance that AMBD does not stand alone in the pursuit of enhancing consumers’ understanding of financial products and services. Instead, to be effective and to ensure a wider scope of coverage of financial education, there must not only be collaboration and cooperation among relevant agencies, but also commitment in achieving the vision of a financially literate generation.

Meanwhile, Haji Osman bin Haji Mohd Jair, Chairman of Brunei Insurance and Takaful Association (BITA), said that this is the 4th edition of the Insurance and Takaful Day observed in the country.

To enhance public awareness, BITA has introduced the Motor Claims Guideline Brochure which is available at the association’s booth. BITA also launched an awareness video to assist public in better understanding the procedures when they sign up with a general agent, he added.

This is a dynamic year as this year BITA sees the drafting of the Life Agents Handbook, the initiation of competition order from the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE). With the restructuring of the management committee this year, BITA has an additional vice-chairman for life insurance/family Takaful. This year, BITA also employed a full time BITA manager who would run the operations of the association.

The event aimed to promote awareness among the public to help them better understand their insurer as well as their rights, launch an awareness video on proper transaction through registered general agents and introduce the Motor Claims Guidelines (MCG) Brochure.

TENS of thousands of people are expected to throng the capital this Sunday in a get together ceremony to express their undivided loyalty and appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the monarch’s Accession to the Throne.

One of the main highlights of the event will be the opening and renaming of the multi-million-dollar Sungai Kedayan Eco-Corridor regeneration project, apart from cultural performances, decorated vehicles and bicycles procession and also traditional boating activities in the Brunei River.

The event is set to be a grand finale of the month-long celebrations and activities lined up in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty’s reign.

In a press conference held at the Brunei-Muara District Office in Old Airport yesterday to shed more light on the event that will start at 8.15am on October 22, Executive Members of the Jawatankuasa Sektoral Keraian Daerah-Daerah dan Mukim including Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) called on the public to come in droves to the capital to celebrate the momentous occasion of the Golden Jubilee with His Majesty and members of the royal family and to express their appreciation to the monarch’s wise leadership over the last five decades which has enabled rapid socio-economic developments in the country.

Abdul Mutalib said the Sunday morning’s programme will be a colourful manifestation of the Golden Jubilee Celebration, which among others will see a procession of over 30 decorated cars and bicycles carried out by different government and private agencies, vibrant cultural performances specially put up by thousands of students and members of different associations and also the opening and renaming of the Sungai Kedayan Eco-Corridor project, where the public can meet His Majesty and members of the royal family in a get-together session.

The Eco-Corridor, which will be the venue for the get-together event will house hundreds of tents to accommodate well-wishers and will also be equipped with all basic amenities for the convenience of the public. There are seven access points to the Eco-Corridor that the public can use to enter the venue during the ceremony.

Image provided by the sectoral committee shows the access points to the Sungai Kedayan Eco-Corridor

Meanwhile, to spruce up the day’s atmosphere and bring back nostalgic memories of activities of early settlers of the iconic Kampong Ayer, several water activities are also planned this Sunday at the Sungai Kedayan Eco-Corridor area, including kayak and 10-15 rower traditional boat races, a ‘Perahu Jumpong’ race, ‘Perahu Labi-labi’ and net fishing – which are all activities that can be traced back to the Kampong Ayer’s early beginnings centuries ago.

No road closures will be effected in the capital during the event, but members of the public are advised to come early and carpool to avoid heavy congestion. Over 2,200 car parking areas will be available at parking lots around the capital, and those parking areas under the management of the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board and private companies will be open free of charge.

Relevant enforcement authorities, including hundreds of personnel from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), will be present throughout the event to direct traffic to designated parking areas and maintain safety of the public. The public are also advised to obey traffic rules and regulations to avoid congestion.

Abdul Mutalib also appealed to the public to maintain cleanliness of the capital during the event and make use of designated bins provided in the areas and be mindful of their safety, especially children.

The regeneration of the Sungai Kedayan Eco-Corridor project was implemented under the 10th National Development Plan and commenced in January last year. The project runs along the Sungai Kedayan river mouth near the city’s famous landmark, the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque and Istana Darussalam to the Edinburgh Bridge.

The major construction works involved river dredging and land reclamation, the construction of a river wall featured with a conducive promenade and a crescent-featured pedestrian bridge connecting both sides of the Sungai Kedayan. The project site was previously a living suburb of eight villages in the Sungai Kedayan that have been resettled elsewhere in Kampong Ayer and on the main land.

Also speaking at the press conference yesterday were Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, Permanent Secretary (Technical and Professional) at the Ministry of Development; Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS); Haji Kamaludin bin Haji Bungsu, Permanent Secretary (Manpower and SHENA) at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO); and Haji Mohammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the MoHA.

Brunei suffer double-digit loss to Hong Kong

BRUNEI Darussalam’s national women hockey team crashed to their biggest defeat in recent history at the 3rd Women’s Asian Hockey Challenge following a 10-0 loss to Hong Kong at the Hockey Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex.

Hong Kong’s third successive victory and clean sheet ensured them a spot in Saturday’s final with Pakistan almost poised to join them even if the latter slip to defeat today.

Hong Kong, who looked overwhelming favourites to win the title, capitalised on a tiresome Brunei team who only played Pakistan the day before though in all honesty it was a lopsided affair.

Hong Kong’s Tiffany Chan was the top performer after scoring five goals but to be fair she made it looked easy as illustrated by how the final three goals were expertly taken.

Tiffany helped her side to a 2-0 lead with a double in the first quarter before Melissa Law Ka Mun and Ka Man Mok scored a goal each in the second quarter to make it 4-0.

Yuet Ngan extended her side lead even further before Melissa grabbed her second of the game.

Tiffany effortlessly glided to the shooting circle before lifting the ball into the goal before captain I Ka Lo rolled her shot wide.

Tiffany was allowed too much room to unleash a fierce low drive into the bottom corner with calls reverberating across the dugout to block her shot falling to deaf ears.

Hong Kong played the ball from the by-line before sending the ball into the centre as Tiffany showed delicate control before coolly lifting the ball into the net with a quality goal.

But the nightmare did not end there as Tiffany converted from a penalty corner in the 57th minute to condemn the tournament hosts into a double-digit defeat.

The Stingers had hoped to reduce the deficit compared to the 8-0 loss in the opening fixture and were confident of doing so when they ended the third quarter trailing by 6-0.

“Hong Kong are a very good side. We can’t take it away from them. Brunei were confident before the game especially with good results they managed against Pakistan yesterday,” said goalkeeping coach Harry Baker.

“It was always going to be difficult because it is Brunei’s turn to play two games in a row. It is possible that they’re still tired from yesterday’s game. I don’t think they fully recovered by looking at them but Hong Kong took advantage.

“Hong Kong were the confident side and they expanded on their game as well. It was always going to be difficult for Brunei,” said the goalkeeping coach.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong coach Arif Ali highlighted an improved performance from his charges compared to their first game against Brunei Darussalam.

“If you don’t look at the score-line but you watch the performance, it was a lot better than the first game we’ve played. So after a rest day, we expect to come back maybe a little bit slow but I told the girls we need to start quick today,” said Arif.

“That’s what we did. We started well and we scored the first goal inside one minute.

“We started quite well and then Brunei defended really well so I have to give them credit which stopped us in the middle for a while. We couldn’t score goals but then we picked the momentum and I’m sure they were tired because they played yesterday too,” he said.

Arif could be fielding his strongest possible selection despite sealing their progress into the final highlighting his aim to preserve the winning mentality his team had built throughout the competition.

“I’m not going to rest anybody. We need to keep that winning mentality going because it’s a team effort. We make sure we go out there with the 18 players again,” he said.

MORE than 180 people recently participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness Forum 2017 at the Lecture Theatre at Block R of the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait.

The forum, organised by the Health Promotion Centre (HPC) of the Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with the Panaga Health Centre and Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, aimed to raise awareness of breast cancer and its various prevention methods among the community – in particular, working women living in the Belait District, and to emphasise the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and highlight the significance of early detection of the disease.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Forum 2017, themed ‘You Care, We Care’, was also held to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an international event observed annually during October which aims to highlight various issues relating to breast cancer, such as the dangers and prevention of the disease.

Various breast cancer-related topics were covered in the forum. These included the various breast cancer prevention methods for the general population, in particular, breast self-examination (BSE); early detection and treatment through care of breast cancer, regular checkups and BSE; and supporting those with breast cancer, which includes palliative care of the disease.

The forum started with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, followed by welcoming remarks from the forum’s co-chairperson, Dr Hajah Norol-Ehsan binti Haji Abdul Hamid, a Medical Officer at the MoH.

Dr Hajah Norol-Ehsan expressed her gratitude to attendees at the forum, commenting that their presence demonstrated their support for raising awareness on breast cancer.

EFFORTS by the local Chinese community to translate ‘Melayu Islam Beraja: Suatu Pendekatan’ (Malay Islamic Monarchy: A Closer Understanding) book were lauded by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education, during the launching of a new Chinese edition yesterday, at the Chung Hwa Middle School in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The Chinese edition of the book was launched in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.

In his remarks, the minister said the book contains comprehensive and sufficient information on Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) values and principles, to allow for a better understanding on the subject among members of the Chinese community.

“Brunei Darussalam has established ties with China since the 7th Century,” said the minister. “It is also stated in history that the Chinese have long existed alongside members of the local community, as residents and citizens of Brunei Darussalam.”

As the citizens of His Majesty, he said, “The Chinese also receive and enjoy numerous facilities such as free education in government schools and government scholarships for further studies, whether locally or abroad. Meanwhile, several Chinese are holding main positions in the government and private sectors; and the Chinese community has also carved a niche for itself in the business sector.”
