MS ABDB win DST Super League

     Fadhil Yunus

MS ABDB have been crowned DST Super League champions for a third straight year after completing their season with a goalless draw against Indera SC at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium last night.

The army personnel were already guaranteed of the crown after Kota Ranger’s hopes of bringing the title race down to the wire were dashed after they drew to Tabuan Muda ‘A’ on February 3.

Kota Ranger will finish as runners-up regardless of the outcome of their final match against MS PDB while Indera SC, who needed a win to keep their hopes for second place alive, are confirmed third place.

Indera SC pair Haimie Anak Nyaring and Suhaimi Anak Sulau and MS ABDB forward Abd Azizi Ali Rahman, all linked with a possible switch to DPMM FC, made what looked to be their final appearances for their respective clubs.

MS ABDB’s Rosmin Kamis made his first start for his new club since leaving DPMM FC.

MS ABDB’s Adey Shariduan Haji Johari registered the first shot off target after heading the ball from a cross wide.

Azizi darted into the box but saw his tame shot comfortably saved by Haimie who could potentially be his future team-mate in red and black colours next season.

The army personnel enjoyed a bright start as Razimie Ramlli just failed to connect a good ball from Md Baharin Hamidon.

Razimie then hit the underside of the bar as the champions-elect cranked up the pressure.

Indera managed to deliver a good ball into the box as Asri Aspar sliced his effort wide.

The former league winners had been under the cosh for the first quarter of the match but they forced the goalkeeper to push the ball away for their first corner.

From the ensuing corner, Md Shafie bin Haji Effendy was the quickest to react but headed wide as MS ABDB retrieved the ball.

Asri went for accuracy as he struck his free-kick straight at the goalkeeper.

Indera went close to an opener after Asri cleverly played a pass to Hamizan Aziz bin Sulaiman but the latter lost his footing enabling the defence to clear the ball away.

Hamizan Aziz sprinted clear into the box but his tame shot was dealt with by MS ABDB goalkeeper Tarmizi Haji Mat Johari.

MS ABDB’s debutant Rosmin Kamis found an opening after skipping past his marker and it needed a block from the Indera defence.

Indera survived another scare as the ball was cleared away for a corner.

Md Shafie hit the side-netting after finding a header on the far post as a consequence of a good cross.

Indera were unfortunate not to have taken the lead after Hamizan Aziz struck against the post after bursting clear to the edge of the box after the restart.

MS ABDB nearly hit from a counter after Mazazizi Mazlan raced clear before whipping a ferocious cross across the face of goal but it was too strong for Razimie.

Abd Azizi nearly sent the perfect farewell gift by presenting his team the lead but the ball was slightly behind him as his header ended wide after meeting a Baharin Hamidon’s cross.

Rosmin showed his cool after resisting the challenge off a marker before unleashing his shot wide.

And at the other end Asri was denied by a combination of the goalkeeper strong reflexes and partially the post.

Nazirruddin bin Haji Ismail tested Tarmizi with a fierce low strike but the goalkeeper dived to his right to make the save.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin presented the prizes.

     Hakim Hayat

MORE emphasis on basic entrepreneurial skills should be given in the curriculum of special needs students to prepare them to be independent and ready to face real life. This will enable special needs students to be confident and be self-sufficient, the Deputy Minister of Education said.

Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh made these remarks during an event organised by the Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education (MoE) to mark the graduation of some 91 pre-vocational students at The Airport Mall in Berakas yesterday.

The deputy minister said with the current curriculum for special needs students in government secondary schools and through collaborations with the private sector and selected industries, students with special needs have been exposed to various skills to boost their marketability in the job market.

“Among the skills taught are vegetable harvesting through fertigation (fertilisation and irrigation) technology and also sales activities that have garnered a good response,” she said.

The deputy minister urged students to take advantage of the opportunities provided to them by becoming more creative and innovative in diversifying the acquired skills, to allow them to be more self-sustainable and confident.

She also told them to be optimistic when venturing into fields of their capabilities, especially in entrepreneurship.

As part of MoE’s efforts to enhance the teaching and learning quality for special needs students, the deputy minister also highlighted their continuous focus on professional development in pre-vocational education for its teachers, in ensuring that they have the latest skills to adapt to the current needs.

She said 52 teachers have completed a workshop on Braille Code Level II, apart from other professional development courses such as orientation and mobility, life-skills and teaching strategies for visually impaired students.

The deputy minister said 1,005 differently abled students with special needs are studying in inclusive learning environments in government secondary schools nationwide since 2017.

She said eight students with special needs are pursuing higher education in local higher education institutions nationwide and called on students with special needs to take heed of this.

Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah said she hopes it will inspire them to excel, despite the challenges.

Ninety-one students who recently completed the five-year Pre-Vocational Programme between 2013 and 2017 received certificates from the deputy minister who was the guest of honour.

She also presented prizes to the top three winners of a Braille Code Reading Competition held recently to mark World Braille Day 2018. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to two Home Room Teachers and five Special Education Needs Assistance (SENA) teachers who retired from service.

Seventeen companies were also praised and awarded with appreciation certificates for their support and partnership in providing work placements for students in the Pre-Vocational Programme.

Haji Ali Yusri bin Haji Abdul Ghafor, Acting Head of the Special Education Unit earlier in his speech said the Pre-Vocational Programme is a five-year secondary school programme designed to meet the needs of students with special needs who have limited skills in domains such as academic, social and communication, physical, sensory and independent living.

He added that the programme is an alternative pathway designed to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities who possess very modest cognitive and academic abilities.

The programme sets out to maximise the potential of students with special needs so that they are able to acquire various living skills and basic vocational skills, to empower them to become independent.

The five-year programme includes basic academic, visits on career exploration and preparation for Years 7, 8 and 9; Career placement and career awareness for Year 10 and Career specialisation placement and follow up in Year 11.

Facilitated by the Home Room Teachers (HRT), specialised classrooms within 28 secondary school settings are used for the Pre-Vocational Programme.

Students spend the majority of their time in the specialised classrooms but are also encouraged to join other students from mainstream classes during co-curricular activities, break times and assembly.

Yesterday’s event also saw an exhibition featuring a variety of works by students of the Pre-Vocational Programme from 22 secondary schools.

The exhibition included hand-crafted items, fresh produce grown in gardens and greenhouses and food products.

AL IDRUS FT booked their place in the President 1 final after beating RB Veterans 2-0 at the Royal Brunei Recreation Club in Berakas yesterday.

Azmanuddin Gillen opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before Haji Hassan Haji Damit provided a two-goal cushion in the 71st minute as Al Idrus cruised to a comfortable victory.

RB Veteran goalkeeper Kamarul Ariffin DP Haji A Rahman made a series of magnificent saves to keep the scores down.

The progression to the final ensured that Al Idrus are on course to lift a domestic double as they also have interest in the VFA Cup.

RB Veterans registered their first shot on target after Yunus Aimi curled a free-kick straight at Al Idrus FT shot-stopper Mohd Faisal Hashim in the opening minutes.

At the other end, Azmanuddin Gillen delivered one of his signature set-pieces but none of his team-mates were on hand to get the telling touch.

The former national team midfielder had a good chance to open the deadlock at the stroke of half-time but his header ended straight at the goalkeeper.

RB carved a rare chance after Haji Yusli Haji Md Yusof contrived to hit the side-netting with what was their closest opportunity to stun the designated hosts.

The tournament favourites opened the breakthrough which originated from winning the ball in the opposition’s half.

Hairodin Abdullah sent a teasing cross into the box and after the defence could not clear the ball away, Azmanuddin pounced with a cool finish.

RB Veterans nearly provided a swift reply after the setback as Haji Yusli Haji Md Yusof connected to a Haji Asdi Haji Duraini’s free-kick but it ended wide.

Al Idrus’s solid defence also contributed to keeping their dangerous opponents at bay as Roslan Haji Tahir made sure that Haji Asdi could not pass him.

Haji Hassan Haji Damit spurned the chance to double the lead after skewing his effort having been set through by Sharuni Haji Bungsu. Sharuni then fired his shot over the bar under pressure by a couple of bodies.

Haji Hassan returned to torment the RB defence and forced a strong save from Kamal Ariffin.

Sharuni cleverly teed off the ball for a team-mate whose effort sailed over the bar much to the relief of RB defence who were under threat.

The threat resumed as Ishak Haji Ibrahim glanced his header just off the near post after connecting from a decent Md Said Haji Sura’s cross.

RB looked to be in trouble after Sharuni rushed into the box and was about to pull the trigger when a fine intervention from defender Yunus Aimi ensured that they did not concede again.

The newly-introduced Haji Norazmie bin PDP A. Razak laid a fine ball for Ishak who directed the ball into the centre as the goalkeeper came up with another smart save to deny Haji Hassan. But there was no stopping the attacker who took his chance in the 71st minute.

Haji Norazmie was again at the heart of Al Idrus FT’s attacking play after combining with Ishak who after duping his marker with a feigned cross found Azmanuddin.

Azmanuddin’s compromising attempt was thwarted by Kamarul Ariffin who had been kept busy for most of the match.

RB had glimpses of handing a lifeline with Haji Yusli finding Haji Md Halimi Haji A Bakar but the latter skied his effort wide.

Al Idrus will face the winner of the I-Team and KB Warriors tie in the President 1 final.

MIB: Our soul, identity

Dr Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong, Senior Special Duties Officer, Secretariat Office, MIB Supreme Council

THE MALAY Islamic Monarchy (MIB) concept has been disseminated in government departments, ministries, the private sector and the entire community of Brunei Darussalam, its (MIB) practice demonstrating the nation’s obedience to the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

As stated in Surah An-Nisaa, Verse 59 in Al-Quran:

“Believers! Obey Allah the Almighty and obey the Messenger, and those from among you who are invested with authority; and then if you were to dispute among yourselves about anything, refer it to Allah the Almighty and the Messenger, if you indeed believe in Allah the Almighty and the Last Day; that is better and more commendable in the end.”

It is apparent the nation is to practise what is brought by their leader (ulil-amri), such as the practice of MIB. We do not overlook the rules and regulations of the State, especially those correlating with MIB. His Majesty continuously reminds the nation to appreciate the MIB values, and to date, over 50 titahs touching on MIB have been pronounced since the philosophy was officially declared 33 years ago.

The MIB concept is to be understood and the values practised throughout everyday life, be it at work or at home, to guide and protect the society from the ever-changing challenges faced as a result of globalisation. All levels of generations can be nurtured and educated with the MIB values and Bruneian culture to preserve its (MIB) existence.

The writer in a group photo with organising committee members of the ‘Society’s Role in Development of Students’ Success’ colloquium

These values should be imbued in the life of the people where it can turn into a tradition, thus the appreciation of MIB can be carried on by the nation’s youths. One of the goals of Brunei Vision 2035 is to develop effective human capital – one that can drive the growth and development of the nation, and for MIB to be used as a form of guidance for the country’s human capital when facing social and economic challenges.

According to the Chamber Dictionary, ‘capital’ is a form of asset used for investment. The meaning of ‘insan’ is a human described as a creature created by Allah the Almighty. Thus, ‘human capital’ is an investment to help construct and shape the country, to create a society that can secure the country’s future success.

To develop human capital, we need to provide them sufficient knowledge, nurture them as Bruneians, imbue them with MIB, ensure that they are high-spirited, possess an enormous soul and are obedient to the ruler, religion and country. They should also have strong physical, mental and spiritual strength, traits required to achieve the Brunei Vision 2035.

Our younger generation is highly motivated and from what we can see from the past decade, they are highly intelligent and tech-literate. This is demonstrated by the high number of startups and businesses founded by our youths in their early 20s. We can find these youth entrepreneurs in incubation centres, signing contracts with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as well as the government and private sector to develop mobile applications and online portals.

We can witness these youth utilising social media such as Facebook and Instagram to run their businesses, engage with the public and provide quality products ranging from food and drinks to office automation services.

It is a clear that Brunei Darussalam is heading towards the right direction. It is hoped that with government support, these youths can achieve major success and place the country on the world map. However, we need to be reminded that quick success can lead to cultural shock, excessive profits can lead to a rush of pride, inflated ego can lead to overspending, and lack of fund management can lead to budget deficiency.

This quick success-failure cycle is often witnessed and it is hoped that MIB can help stem this in terms of providing support and guidance towards running a successful business. MIB has helped preserve Brunei Darussalam and grow its prosperity; Insya Allah, it can do the same for our business-centric human capital.

To face today’s era of globalisation, we need to have a mentally strong generation infused with strong cultural values that will help them face all types of challenges. The young generation should have a positive personality model to ensure the continuity of traditions, as exhorted by His Majesty in his titah during the country’s 24th National Day celebrations on February 23, 2008:

“Ejen pembawa perubahan, seperti institusi keluarga, institusi pendidikan dan dakwah. Media dan lain-lain, perlu melihat perkara ini dengan keinsafan yang mendalam, supaya kita dapat sama-sama fokus bagaimana mengubat dan sekali gus melahirkan modal insan yang berkualiti.”

We want our human capital to be an important asset in the development of the nation. We recognise that the source of human capital begins with the young intellectuals who will lead us to the success of this country’s development plan. Human capital development should be holistic and encompasses the acquisition of knowledge and skills or intellectual capital, including entrepreneurial capabilities, scientific and technological knowledge, positive and progressive attitudes, values and ethics through education, social exposure, and lifelong learning exercises.

The pursuit of worldly things and desires alone will not bring advantages in terms of development of human capital because the purpose of human creation is clear as indicated in Surah Az-Zariyat, Verse 56 of Al-Quran:

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”

It is hoped the development is aligned with the MIB philosophy where Islam is a key pillar that guides us to success in this life and the hereafter. Based on Islam, human capital will produce trust, honesty, obedience and so forth. The formation of these values not only meets the needs of the organisation, but also for the people and the country based on Islamic teachings. In line with this, the Secretariat Office of the MIB Supreme Council (MTMIB) is always cooperating with all parties to spread the understanding of MIB values in the everyday life of society and the state of Brunei Darussalam.

In this regard, the Secretariat Office of the MTMIB appreciates the efforts of Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School (SMPDSM) and Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School (SMJA) for holding the ‘Community Role Colloquium in the Formation of Student Success’ event – themed ‘Generated Visionary Malay-Based Islamic Generation’ – earlier last year.

This programme hopes to create a sense of discipline and promote academic achievement among our students. It presents an opportunity to explore an informal type of learning and teaching process to further develop an attitude of responsibility, trust, integrity, honesty, obedience, commitment, diligence and respect for parents and teachers and foster a strong national spirit based on the values of MIB. Quality MIB values should be owned and practised by the youths of this country in our quest to produce the ‘ideal Bruneian’.

Such collaboration in running programmes for the benefit of the nation and its residents where they will be embedded with the pure values of MIB, so that they can contribute and play their part in achieving the Brunei Vision 2035, is welcomed by the Secretariat Office of the MTMIB.

The importance of knowing and practising MIB values was stressed by His Majesty in his titah on February 7, 2018:

It is imperative that the leaders of the country who make the decisions, and the younger generation – the heirs of our nation – understand and cultivate the values of MIB which will bring peace and harmony to life under the leadership of a beloved ruler.

JAPAN signalled its commitment to boost cooperation with long-time partner, Brunei Darussalam, in terms of its economic diversification efforts and other areas of potential collaboration, following a high-level meeting yesterday between officials from both countries.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, hosted a lunch at the Radisson Hotel for the visiting Japanese Foreign Minister, Taro Kono, where both sides shared views and discussed ways of bolstering mutual cooperation.

Also present at the meeting was the Minister of Defence II, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof.

During the meeting, Kono underscored Japan’s expectations for further technical cooperation, to assist with Brunei’s efforts in economic diversification.

Following the meeting, the Deputy Press Secretary at the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Toshihide Ando, gave a press conference, in which he said the agreement, which is still in negotiation stages, will involve cost-sharing technical cooperation.

Ando added that during the meeting, the Japanese Foreign Minister expressed hope for an early signing of the technical cooperation agreement.

At the cornerstone of Japan-Brunei bilateral relations is the extensive cooperation in the energy field, where Japan remains Brunei’s largest trading partner in the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the steady inflow of investments from Japanese companies in the energy sector.

“Japan would like to deepen the collaboration and strengthen extensive cooperation with Brunei, which now serves as Asean’s coordinating country for Japan, during the 45th anniversary of Asean-Japan Friendship and Cooperation this year,” said Kono during the meeting.

Both sides also agreed to expand defence exchange cooperation, as well as negotiations to resume direct flights between Japan and Brunei for the first time since 1998.

During the meeting, Kono also spoke about Japan’s ambitious new ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy’, where he emphasised the significance of Brunei and other Asean member countries for the promotion of the strategy, being geographically located to connect the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Erywan, in this regard, said his commitment for deeper understanding towards the direction of that strategy, and continued cooperation with Japan.

The Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy, launched by the Japanese government in late 2017, comes with three key objectives – to promote and establish the fundamental values of freedom, democracy, rule of law (freedom of navigation) and a market economy; to pursue economic prosperity through improved connectivity, among others; and to secure peace and stability.

As Brunei strives to diversify its economy, it is also hoped that it can leverage on the policy, which aims to connect two continents and two oceans to effectuate a free and open Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean, through improved connectivity between Asia and Africa.

Both sides also re-affirmed their commitment in promoting free trade in the region, by encouraging the now revived Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement to come into force earlier, while also promoting strong cooperation for a swift and high-quality Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) deal with signatory countries.

Both sides also discussed on issues pertaining to North Korea, where both foreign ministers agreed on applying maximum pressure on North Korea, including the enforcement of the United Nations’ Security Council resolutions.

Ando said despite what seems to be thawing of strained relations between South Korea and North Korea as witnessed in the past week, the threat of North Korea’s nuclear proliferation still remains, towards peace and security of the region and the international arena.

This is the first visit in five years by a Japanese Foreign Minister to Brunei, who throughout his one-day visit, also called at the Muara Commercial Port to meet with the crew of the visiting Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Overseas Training Cruise.

The JMSDF cruise ships JS Sawagiri, JS Yamagiri and JS Yamayuki will be docked at the port during a current goodwill visit until February 14, during which the crew will take part in sporting activities, a ship tour with Royal Brunei Navy officers and a beach clean-up at Muara.

THE Maxillofacial, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Centre (MFPRSC) has the potential to contribute to the nation’s economic growth as the centre was constructed with health tourism in mind, noted Minister of Finance II, Dato Seri Paduka Dr Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah in his capacity as Chairman of Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC).

The minister, speaking to the Bulletin on the sidelines of the centre’s opening ceremony yesterday which he officiated, added that with the centre’s top facilities and state-of-the-art labs and equipment – which are not seen in similar treatment centres in other Asean member countries – along with its qualified doctors, the MFPRSC can potentially market its services to foreign patients looking for reconstructive surgery treatment.

He expressed his pride in officially having MFPRSC and its world class facilities under the umbrella of the PJSC and joining the PJSC’s other patient services such as The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC) and the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre in Jerudong.

“We are looking forward to providing better services, better care for our patients like what we always do here at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital … I think we are able to work well with RIPAS Hospital in terms of transferring patients at RIPAS Hospital in urgent need of treatment to MFPRSC. The patient can be immediately dealt with and can come over any time (to MFPRSC) and even on-call services can be provided, even outside normal working hours,” the minister said.

He added that the opening of the MFPRSC is a big step forward in achieving Brunei Darussalam’s vision of realising a high quality of life, recognising the accomplishments of its highly skilled people, and bringing about a sustainable and diversified economy.

He added that one of the core goals of MFPRSC is to be entirely patient-oriented to ensure efficient delivery of care and services to its patients, as only by doing so can the centre achieve excellence and maintain the drive to be innovative.

“By being patient-oriented, I believe we will not only raise the quality of life in Brunei Darussalam, but also help diversify the services available in the country and create new job opportunities while enhancing the skills of our people well,” the minister said.

He said the centre will continue to provide valuable services to Brunei’s citizens and residents as well as patients from neighbouring countries for medical conditions such as birth deformities of the face and neck, cancer of the mouth and face, tumours of the jaws and orbits, and facial reconstructions following accidents or face deformities left by tumours and cancers.

“As Chairman of PJSC I am proud to say that this centre has the state-of-the-art technology required to treat complex tumours of the mouth and jawbones, and reconstruct them after the tumours have been removed,” said Dato Seri Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew.

Also present at the opening of the MFPRSC at its premises in the vicinity of RIPAS Hospital yesterday was the Deputy Chairman of PJSC and Minister of Health Dato Paduka Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Jaafar.

The opening ceremony began with the recitation of Doa by a religious officer at PJSC, Ustaz Haji Ishkandar bin Haji Buntar. Following this was welcoming remarks delivered by the Head of MFPRSC, Dr Mazrul Adimin bin Haji Awang Besar.

“The MFPRSC aims to and will continuously strive towards radically improving its quality of service and infrastructure for patients and staff both in the immediate future and in the years to come,” said Dr Mazrul, pointing out that the centre has worked tirelessly to achieve these improvements.

PJSC Executive Director, Dato Seri Laila Jasa Dr N Ravindranathan, gave a brief talk about the centre, its vision and mission, as well as its future.

Dato Seri Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew and other distinguished guests toured the centre, specifically focussing on the centre’s state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

Following the tour, Dato Seri Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew officially opened the centre by participating in a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony and signing a plaque.

Yesterday’s opening ceremony coincided with the kicking off of the MFPRSC’s free cancer screening clinic for the mouth, neck and skin of head and neck.

The newly opened centre is committed to delivering quality, patient-centred services and state-of-the-art healthcare in the field of maxillofacial, facial plastic, reconstructive surgery, and head and neck surgical oncology. It also offers outpatient care, surgical and laser treatments, as well as cranio-maxillofacial prosthetics and reconstructive implantology services, and houses a 3-D printing laboratory.

Apart from these services, the centre also offers training courses such as the Advanced Training in Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery Trauma, Advanced Diploma in Neuro/Plastic/Cranio-Maxillofacial/Microvascular Surgical Nursing, Diploma for Operation Theatre Assistants, Nursing Student Affiliation, and Training; Internship and Observation for Medical, Dental and Nursing Students.

Meanwhile, the surgical clinic offers a variety of services, notably laser treatment which includes C6 Medlite Laser for face rejuvenation, pigmentation, tattoo removal and hair removal, and VBeam Pulse Dyed Laser for scars, angiomas, AV malformation and port wine stains.
