HE FAILED to make it to the final of the 2016 Euro Guess the Semi-Finalists contest, but that did not deter Chan Koo Boon from trying his luck once again in the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Guess the Semi-Finalists Contest. This time, it turned out to be a success for the local doctor who picked the right key to win the grand prize, a Hyundai Verna.

“Prior to this, I did attempt the 2016 Euro Guess the Semi-Finalists contest. That time I got three out of four correct, so I thought I will give it another try this time to try my luck and now I have ended up with this big prize. I feel so happy, and this will be the third car for my family,” said an elated Chan.

Chan, who is attached to the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital since 2005 and is currently away on overseas training, said, “I am a supporter of the FIFA World Cup, and although I had no favourite team in mind, I hoped Brazil or France will win the tournament.

“World Cup this time around was quite unpredictable; many of the expected teams to win were knocked out in the early stages. Even this contest was a bit tricky and in the end I had to use some permutations to win it.”

Asked what his feeling was when he tried the second round of attempting to get the right key to the Verna, he noted that there was no special instinct and he was practically just cool about it. “If it’s mine then it’s to be mine, and upon hearing the engine of the Verna roar, I was shocked and happy at the same time.”

The contest, held from the first week of June until June 29, was organised by Brunei Press, the publishers of Borneo Bulletin and Media Permata, with support from main sponsor Hyundai – Setia Motors Sdn Bhd and co-sponsors Baiduri Bank and McDonald’s-Makan Ceria Sdn Bhd.

The draw and prize presentation took place yesterday at the Millennium Restaurant in Beribi.

The top 13 selected winners stood a chance to win the grand prize of a new Hyundai Verna SX16 worth about BND28,000 sponsored by Setia Motors, the local Hyundai dealer.

They were given a key each and the lucky person able to start the car would drive away the Verna – that was the challenge. The session saw two rounds of tryouts where in the first round the right key to the Verna was not put in the bowl of keys to add suspense to the draw.

Representing Brunei Press at the prize presentation ceremony were its General Manager Reggie See, Deputy General Manager Hazizah Osman and Senior Manager – Finance and Operations Suzie Houng.

Setia Motors was represented by its General Manager James Chin and Business Development Manager Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Mui’iz bin Pengiran Indera Setia Diraja Sahibul Karib Pengiran Anak Haji ldris while Head of Group Communications Dorothy Newn represented Baiduri Bank and Human Resource Executive of Makan Ceria Noor Hafilah binti Mohd Salleh represented McDonald’s.

In his welcoming remarks prior to the draw and prize presentation, Reggie See noted that it was for the first time FIFA World Cup was held in Eastern Europe, and the most expensive edition in the history of the tournament which cost an estimated USD14.2 billion.

“The football spectacle also for the first time saw the video assistant referee (VAR) system to assist the referee during the match, with many penalties awarded for handballs, rough play and goalmouth actions, making the matches exciting and their outcomes unpredictable,” he said.

The general manager further noted that being a popular event watched around the world, the FIFA World Cup 2018 was also closely followed by many football enthusiasts in Brunei and that is why the Guess the Semi-Finalists Contest attracted more than 20,000 entries from readers of Borneo Bulletin and Media Permata, though only about one per cent guessed correctly the four semi-finalists.

He expressed his appreciation to all the participants and also the management and representatives of Setia Motors, Baiduri Bank and Makan Ceria for making the contest a big success.

He highlighted that Setia Motors has also supported the Guess the Semi-Finalists contests organised by Brunei Press during the Euro 2004, FIFA 2006 World Cup, Euro 2012 and World Cup Brazil 2014.

Yesterday’s event also saw the presentation of prizes to winners of the second and third spots – Noormasnalina binti Haji Abu Bakar and Sabtu bin Kassim – who won Baiduri Savings account worth BND3,000 and BND2,000, respectively.

Three groups of consolation prize winners, meanwhile, walked away with McDonald’s vouchers and Hyundai merchandise.

In total, 63 prizes were given away for the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Guess the Semi-Finalists contest.

The winning entries were selected by representatives of Brunei Press, the organiser, Setia Motors (Hyundai), the contest partner, Baiduri Bank and Makan Ceria Sdn Bhd (McDonald’s), prize sponsors.

PROSECUTORS General of ASEAN member states and China yesterday signed a joint declaration reaffirming strong commitment in working closer to address cybercrime and cybersecurity related threats, as well as other transnational organised crimes at both national and regional levels, following the conclusion of the 11th China-ASEAN Prosecutors General Conference.

The two-day meeting, hosted by Brunei this year and held at the Rizqun International Hotel, saw over 60 prosecutorial professionals from ASEAN member states and China holding discussions focussing on the sharing of best practices to address the challenges emerging from cybercrimes.

In the joint declaration, the Prosecutors General of ASEAN member states and China agreed to formulate, improve and strengthen measures to fight transnational crime – especially cybercrime – through various measures, including working with respective domestic agencies to improve procedures for investigations, collection of electronic evidence and protection of children against online sexual violence, and to evaluate the effectiveness of such measures on a regular basis.

They also agreed to enhance the specialisation of prosecutors and consider the establishment of specialised prosecution units to guide or assist other prosecutors in cases involving cybercrime and electronic evidence.

The Prosecutors General also concurred to further explore initiatives for the purpose of strengthening the capacity of prosecutors in handling transnational crimes, including the exchange of prosecutors, training of prosecutors, and sharing of experience and expertise in implementing and enforcing laws and measures to combat cybercrime and cybersecurity threats, as well as agree to strengthen cooperation with local law enforcement agencies and the private sector in their countries to ensure effective criminal justice response against cybercrime.

In addition to this, the Prosecutors General were in agreement on the need to raise awareness on cybercrime and associated risks by providing the public, especially children and the younger generation with information on the problem.

The joint declaration also emphasised the important role played by the China-ASEAN Prosecutors General Conference since its inception in 2004 in combating transnational crime, protecting social welfare and upholding national stability, thus contributing to promoting ASEAN-China relations as well as regional and international peace, stability and prosperity.

It also noted the increasing importance accorded by ASEAN to address cybercrime and cybersecurity related issues through various ASEAN mechanisms, and international organisations such as the International Association of Prosecutor (IAP) and its sub-organisation Global Prosecutor E-crime Network (GPEN), the International Police Organization (INTERPOL), and the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in tackling cybercrime through inter-organisational coordination, international cooperation and capacity building initiatives.

Penning the joint declaration for Brunei Darussalam was Attorney General and conference chairperson Dato Paduka Haji Hairol Arni bin Haji Abdul Majid.

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam visited several schools in the capital yesterday as part of efforts to enhance quality education in the country.

Shortly after the presentation of house keys to 860 individuals in a ceremony at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas, the ruler, along with his entourage comprising Cabinet Ministers and government officials, visited Pusar Ulak Primary School and Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam (SMJA) Secondary School and made an unscheduled stop at the nearby Raja Isteri Fatimah Primary School.

His Majesty was greeted by cheering children in a show of love and loyalty towards the monarch at the schools where the ruler spent most of the morning observing several classrooms and taking a closer look at students’ learning a variety of skills from computer literacy to English language, physical exercise as well as arts and craft.

The monarch first visited Pusar Ulak Primary School which hosts some 270 students from Pre-school to Year 6. The school strives to mould ethical, life-long learners equipped with skills to make a positive contribution to the nation.

According to Headmaster Colm Mcdermott, the school is one of the first to implement the new ‘School-Based Assessment System’ as well as ‘Guided Reading’ which is now widely used in primary schools across the country.

“We have worked closely with other (primary) schools, especially in Cluster 1, to exchange ideas and ensure these initiatives are also implemented in their respective schools,” he added.

The school is separated into two main building blocks; the old building, which was built in 1965 and the new building which was built five decades later in 2015.

Currently, the school has 276 students with over 37 teachers and 10 support staff. In 2017, over 60 per cent of Primary School Assessment students achieved grade A-D.

His Majesty then visited his former school, SMJA Secondary School where the monarch toured the classrooms and mingled with the students and teachers as well as former students.

The monarch observed various activities carried out by the students. SMJA Secondary School is one of the top sports achievers in the country, winning several championships in major sporting events.

According to Acting Principal Nor’izzah binti Haji Othman, the school won top prizes in the recent futsal and football inter-school championships. The school has also managed to revive the game of basketball and has recently shifted its focus to creative arts and design, a popular subject among secondary students.

SMJA Secondary School is also one of the oldest government schools in the country and was built in the 1950s.

The school experienced a tragedy where its old building was run down by a fire back in 1992. The school was rebuilt in 1994, and celebrated its golden jubilee in 2001.

The school at present has 995 students from Year 7 to Year 11 in 48 classes as well as 110 teachers and staff.

His Majesty and entourage then decided to walk across the street to Raja Isteri Fatimah Primary School, much to the surprise of students, teachers and parents alike.

During the brief visit, eager students lined up the gates to greet the benevolent ruler as he walked towards the school entrance. There, the ruler mingled with the children and teachers, reminding them of the importance of education in building the future of the nation.

The school’s Headmistress Siti Norbayu binti Haji Samid, expressed appreciation to His Majesty for the visit.

“For the students, it’s the fulfilment of a dream to get close with their much-beloved monarch. On behalf of the school, we like to wish His Majesty good health and pray for the monarch’s continued rule to achieve success and happiness for the country,” the headmistress noted.

Currently, the school has over 160 students, 28 teachers and eight supporting staff. In the afternoon, the school also hosts religious studies for students.

The visits to the schools further highlight the monarch’s keen interest in the progress of the country’s education system. It also reflected the ruler’s concern and care towards providing quality education for the country’s citizens.

The schools included Pusar UIak Primary School, Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam (SMJA) Secondary School and Raja Isteri Fatimah Primary School.

During his visit to the schools, the monarch interacted with students, teachers and staff to learn about the progress of the institutions and toured the various facilities and exhibitions displaying the schools’ latest projects and achievements.

His Majesty’s visit to the schools reflected the monarch’s concern on the welfare and well-being of the students, especially in ensuring that students get holistic education to enhance not only their academic achievements but also life skills, creativity, confidence and religious knowledge.

The visits were part of the continuous efforts by the monarch to ensure that all strategies and initiatives relating to education are effectively implemented at education institutions in the country to the highest quality and are making a positive impact on improving the quality of teaching and learning.

His Majesty later visited the residence of the Village Head of Kampong Sungai Akar Haji Ramlee bin Haji Mat Zain where the monarch took a closer look at the village’s progress and learned more about activities that are being carried out there. Kampong Sungai Akar is home to 6,620 people.

With an area of 121.5-square metres, each semi-detached and terrace house at the RPN Kampong Panchor Mengkubau has three bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen.

During the visit, recipients whose houses were not in the schedule of His Majesty’s visiting itinerary also had their wishes fulfilled by the caring monarch. His Majesty was seen happily accepting invitations to the houses and walked through the streets under the glaring mid-day sun with his subjects.

RPN Kampong Panchor Mengkubau has 4,000 housing units. Of this, 2,400 are terrace houses while 1,600 are semi-detached units. Built on 309 hectares of land, the project’s construction cost is over BND300 million.

The housing scheme will be equipped with a school, mosque, commercial amenities, community centre, parks, playground and recreational areas in the future.

To date, the National Housing Scheme has provided more than 29,000 houses while 27,379 individuals have received houses under STKRJ. Of this, over 18,000 are from Brunei-Muara District.

Since the nation attained independence in 1984, citizens and residents in the country continue to enjoy various facilities including affordable housing, under the leadership of His Majesty.

This reflects the monarch’s concern for the people and demonstrates the government’s commitment in upholding the aspiration of the monarch to provide sustainable and affordable housing, in line with the Brunei Vision 2035 and the objective of the National Housing Scheme to enhance the quality of life in the Sultanate.

PIP champions of NFABD Under-16 Youth League

PROJEK Ikan Pusu (PIP) emerged champions in the 2018 NFABD Under-16 Youth League after their 2-0 win over Bang Dalam FC last Sunday at the Berakas Sports Complex.

The team now lead the table by an unassailable 18 points to stylishly win the 2018 championship. Projek Ikan Pusu bettered their requirement of a draw coming into the match.

PIP are also in line of scooping the Top Scorer award with lethal finisher Shafiq Hidayat Al-Azim’s haul of 15 goals looked likely not to be eclipsed. His nearest rival is his own team-mate Syafiq Saifuddin who has six.

PIP are unbeaten in the league, scoring 25 goals and conceding just twice en route to their maiden league title.

The team finished runners-up to Tabuan ‘A’ in the last two seasons and third time is the charm for the boys in yellow and black.

“For the last two years, we were runner-up to Tabuan A. This year, our dream has finally come true. For this, I will have to say thank you to all our coaches – in particular, Under-16 coach Ameer Aziz-Hakim Haji Abdul Lani and goalkeeper coach Muhd Zainal Abiddin Haji Ismail,” beamed PIP head coach Haji Omar Haji Jamil.

Asked what he said to his team in their post-mortem after the match, Haji Omar said, “Apart from congratulating my players, I told them it is not easy to win the Under-16 League. But, a big part of the credit also goes to the strong support of their parents and family members. Of course, PIP Management and our coaches all played big parts as well. Without them so strongly behind us, this victory today would not be possible.

“I also told my players to now think big – to go on to serve Brunei Darussalam with distinction and to help our country to eventually be a force to be reckoned with in ASEAN football. This is the ultimate objective of PIP. I also told them to be inspired by the National Youth Day 2018 slogan Belia Pemacu Negara Maju (Youth As Drivers of Progressive Nation). After all, they are our country’s future,” he added.

Asked for his thoughts, PIP Manager Cheah Swee Ming, added, “This may sound surprising, but I would like to, first and foremost, say thank you to all the participating teams for always putting in an extra effort whenever they play PIP. Without all of you constantly trying your best to defeat us, Projek Ikan Pusu would not be able to continuously work on our weaknesses and build on our strengths to be where we are today. It is obviously quality competition that helps all the participating teams to similarly improve. PIP is just fortunate to have two excellent strikers and an equally outstanding goalkeeper.

“Therefore, we must all thank FIFA and the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) for organising this league that enabled all the teams and players to have exposure to quality competition. We can train all year-round, but it is only with stiff competition that the rough diamonds will be able to emerge and dazzle.

“For example, Brunei Darussalam would not know about Hidayat, Syafiq or Muhd Ajrul if not for this competition. The latter amazingly only let in two goals throughout the tournament. He is truly a revelation,” he explained.

“Last, but by no means least, on behalf of PIP I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of NFABD, for the very strong support of grassroots football development.

“Equally deserving special thanks are the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for their strong support of junior football development in Brunei Darussalam. Grassroots football development is impossible without their continuous support,” he said.

TO FOSTER cross-cultural understanding over 80 delegates of the fifth Strategic Educational Alliance of Southeast Asia (SEA2) Conference visited the Belait District on Wednesday to learn more about its culture and history.

The visit was part of the delegates’ fifth SEA2 Conference itinerary.

The group of 83 included administrators, teachers and students from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

The SEA2 Conference, themed ‘ASEAN Speaks: Origin of Language’ this year, aimed to gather some of the brightest students from several schools in Southeast Asian countries. The annual conference allows students to learn more about the culture and history of the host country as well as the system of education implemented and products available in the country.

This is the first time Brunei Darussalam hosted the conference.

The delegates’ Belait visit was part of a five-day trek of the Sultanate from August 13 – 17, which included stops at the Brunei-Muara and Tutong districts.

During their time in Belait, the group visited the Belait District Museum to learn more about the rich traditional culture and history of the district. They also dropped by the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre, where they viewed a science show and participated in tech challenges.

The delegates had visited Thailand for last year’s SEA2 Conference. The next will be hosted by the Philippines in 2019.

“Among the activities held for the delegates include the introduction to traditional food,” said Noorizatul Zarana, who is also an upper sixth form student at Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College.

She added that the conference also provided the opportunity to introduce to the delegates the schools and the education system in the country.

“We hope the delegates will take away this valuable knowledge of our culture, history and educational system. In next year’s SEA2 Conference, we hope to continue showcasing our Bruneian hospitality, friendliness, culture and history,” she said.

Khristina Marie P Ricarder, a delegate from Assumption College, Metro Manila, the Philippines said it was her first time in Brunei and felt elated to be immersed in its beauty, rich culture and history.

“During the SEA2 Conference, I learnt more about the values and customs of Brunei. I felt that it was an enriching experience and I grew more as a person because of it,” she said.

ON THE occasion of the Republic of Indonesia’s anniversary of the 73rd Independence Day which falls today, the Indonesian Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Dr Sujatmiko praised the long-standing excellent ties Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia have shared over many years in different areas, expressing confidence the alliance will continue to be boosted for the benefit of both nations.

In his Independence Day message to the people of Brunei Darussalam and Indonesians residing in the Sultanate, Dr Sujatmiko said, “This year has seen significant achievements by both countries in strengthening cooperation. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and Indonesian President Joko Widodo met during His Majesty’s State Visit to Indonesia in May this year and have reinforced the foundation for both countries to move forward to enhance cooperation in various fields.”

The ambassador said that following up both leaders’ decisions during His Majesty’s State Visit in May this year, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam held the 4th Joint Committee for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) Forum from July 19-20.

The JCBC Forum is a bilateral consultation forum aimed at exploring economic and business opportunities as well as mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

The forum saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sriwijaya Air and Syarikat Kejuruteraan Bumiputera Belait Sdn Bhd for flights from Bandar Seri Begawan to Balikpapan and commitment of both countries to intensify finalisation of the MoU on the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers in Brunei Darussalam, the envoy said.

“The JCBC also laid nine priorities of bilateral cooperation stated by Foreign Minister of Indonesia Retno Marsudi, whereby both countries committed to enhance cooperation in various fields including strategic industry, health, agriculture, tourism, consular affairs and regional and international issues. These will be the focus of our bilateral cooperation and programmes in the years ahead,” he said.

In conjunction with the anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, the ambassador also shared that the embassy will organise a series of events including an exhibition of Indonesian products and culture titled ‘Magnificent Indonesia’ at the Times Square Shopping Centre in Berakas from August 30 to September 2.

“Through the event, I hope that our two nations will be closer and able to boost cooperation and bring mutual benefits for the welfare of the people of both countries,” he added.

Independence

On the occasion of Indonesia’s anniversary of the 73rd Independence Day, Dr Sujatmiko said that exactly 73 years ago today, the people of Indonesia declared independence. “It was the pinnacle of the arduous struggle of our forefathers who have sacrificed their lives and everything else for the country.

“During this auspicious day, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to Allah the Almighty for His blessings for the 73rd anniversary of Indonesia’s independence and His blessings to all Indonesians, in particular those residing in Brunei Darussalam. I also would like to extend, once again, my warmest greetings and felicitations to His Majesty and the people of Brunei for the 72nd birthday of His Majesty. May His Majesty continue to guide Brunei Darussalam to its desired destination,” he added.

He also extended his appreciation on behalf of the Indonesian Government and people of Indonesia for the sympathy and prayers offered by His Majesty and the people of Brunei Darussalam for the victims of the recent earthquake in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.

Achievements

The theme for this year’s Independence Day of Indonesia celebration is Kerja Kita, Prestasi Bangsa (Our Work, Nation’s Achievement).

Dr Sujatmiko said, “Indeed, it is due to the hard work of all Indonesians that the country reached its current position in the global political economy. Early this year, Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) hit one trillion dollars, entering the so-called trillion-dollar club with other 15 countries. In 2030, Indonesia’s GDP is projected to reach USD2.88 trillion, which will enhance Indonesia’s position in the G20 as well as the United Nations (UN).

“Indonesia’s on-going policy reforms have shown its results in the investment sector. The country’s rank on Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) in 2018 surged 19 places to 72 from its previous rank of 91 in 2017. Meanwhile, Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings have upgraded Indonesia’s sovereign credit rating to “investment grade” last year. Yet, we strive to reach a higher rank, especially on the EoDB, which is still far from Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s target position in the top 40.”

He added, “In terms of international relations, Indonesia conveys its gratitude for the support of countries that elected it as a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a fourth time in June 2018. Our priorities as the Non-Permanent Member are to strengthen the ecosystem of peace and stability, to strengthen the synergy between the regional organisation and UN Security Council; to improve a comprehensive approach in dealing with transnational crime; and to synergise efforts to create peace with the achievement of development agenda 2030. Such special privilege surely brings great responsibility.

“We thank the Government of Brunei Darussalam for its strong support during the election and hope for the Sultanate’s continuous support in addressing peace and security issues in the world, especially in this region of ours.”

Dr Sujatmiko also shared that domestically, Indonesia is preparing for simultaneous presidential and legislative elections in April 2019.

“It will be the 12th national election and the fourth direct election of the President and Vice-President in the long history of Indonesian democracy. This democratic festivity will involve all Indonesians, including those who live in Brunei Darussalam. Therefore, I urge all Indonesian citizens to participate in the election next year in an orderly manner,” he said.

Concluding the message, the ambassador conveyed his congratulations to his Indonesian brethren on the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the independence of Indonesia.

He said, “Let this historic moment be an opportunity for us all to celebrate, reflect and renew our commitment for a stronger, diverse yet unified nation and continue to strengthen Indonesia-Brunei relations. Dirgahayu Indonesiaku, Kerja Kita, Prestasi Bangsa.”

The month-long festival was launched by His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Pro-Chancellor of UBD.

After officiating the UBD Convocation Festival 2018, His Royal Highness planted a tree on the UBD Botanical Research Centre ground.

The plant, Dipterocarpus borneensis V Slooten, locally known as Keruing Sindur or Resak Kerangas, is native to Brunei Darussalam but a threatened endemic species due to agricultural expansion and logging activities. It is the only dipterocarpus species that grows in a tropical heath forest.

This year’s Convocation Festival theme ‘ILM’ stands for Innovation, Leadership and Mastery.

When pronounced as ‘ilm’, it shares its meaning with the Arabic term and Malay word ilmu which means knowledge.

The UBD in a press statement said the theme highlights the importance of innovation which has significant benefits to a society. “Innovation attests to the originality and ingenuity of UBD’s research work and knowledge creation, which culminates in being leaders and master of knowledge. The three qualities will ensure a well-educated and highly-skilled workforce and the development of a dynamic and sustainable national economy,” the statement added.

This year, UBD aims to explore its collective knowledge and research to focus on one of its key strengths, which is in the field of environmental and biodiversity research, sustainable development and green energy.

Disney dream comes true for young local musician

|     Aziz Idris     |

A FAMOUS Disney princess once sang, “A dream is a wish your heart makes.” But once you’ve wished it, how do you make that dream come true?

For Bruneian musician Aisyah Zulkarnain, it was a dream come true to be part of the music team for Disney’s upcoming movie, Christopher Robin based on the childhood book character, Winnie the Pooh.

“I have always been a fan of Winnie the Pooh!” the 22-year-old said when asked about her feelings of being a part of the movie. Aisyah had watched much of the show based on the book– even owning a life-sized Pooh toy.

Disney’s Christopher Robin is directed by Marc Forster, known for his work in World War Z, with music by Geoff Zanelli, the music composer for the Pirate of the Caribbean’s film series, and American singer and songwriter, Jon Brion.

After meeting Zanelli’s team, through acquaintances during her time working at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions – Hollywood music composer responsible for blockbuster movies, The Dark Knight and Inception – the young musician landed the part on the original soundtrack (OST) of Christopher Robin.

In an e-mail interview with the Weekend Bulletin, Aisyah explained that a member of Zanelli’s team reached out to the studio she was working at, Arkenstone Inc, and asked if the composer and owner, Bryce Jacobs and Aisyah wanted to be a part of the music team for the film. They replied with a resounding “yes!”

“Working on Disney’s Christopher Robin has definitely been one of the highlights of my career so far! I grew up watching Disney, and still to this day I’m a huge fan, so being a part of a Disney project is definitely a dream come true.

“It was so exciting to be a part of the music team! It was surreal to see Winnie the Pooh and his friends onscreen while we were working, as these characters were so prominent in my childhood,” chimed Aisyah, who turns 23 next month.

Aisyah currently works at Arkenstone Inc with composer Bryce Jacobs as a Technical Score Engineer. Prior to working there, she worked at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions and Henry Jackman’s Sacred Tiger Music. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Music at the University of Rochester, New York in 2017.

When asked about her experiences working with these big names in Hollywood, Aisyah replied, “Their styles are so unique from one another, but their ideas meshed really well together to create a wonderful score that brings out the personalities of the characters and the emotions of the story line.”

Working as technical score engineer, she was assigned many tasks depending on what was needed for a project. For Christopher Robin, she was heavily involved with the recording process and music preparation.

“For example, Bryce was the main guitarist for the project and performed on the majority of the score. I recorded his guitar and vocal performances at our studio, and delivered them so that they could be integrated into the score,” she noted.

One memorable experience was during a scoring session at one of the largest motion picture scoring venues in the world – the Barbara Streisand Scoring Stage at Sony Pictures Studios – where she single-handedly recorded a live orchestra for the project.

“Recording the orchestra was an exciting experience, as we got to see the musicians bring the film score to life,” she noted.

Describing the movie, she said nostalgia resonated with her, but at the same time it was “refreshing” because the film tells a new story of Christopher Robin as an adult played by Irish-born actor, Ewan McGregor.

GERMAN runner Andreas Bussinger, 28, was smitten by the charms of Tutong District, while passing through Brunei to raise awareness and funds for environmental projects across Borneo.

The run through the western coastal line of the Borneo Island has never been attempted, and Bussinger has set himself the mammoth task of running 1,500km through Sabah, Brunei, Sarawak and Kalimantan.

His mission enabled him to interact with locals and discuss issues at the grassroots level, but the Trans-Borneo Run is far from an easy trek no thanks to the high temperatures, mountainous terrain and mosquito-infested areas.

Bussinger is accompanied by his family and friends, who travel alongside him in a caravan throughout the journey.

“We started at Kudat, Sabah, which is at the tip of Borneo,” he told the Weekend Bulletin. “I have completed 500km in Brunei, and I’m now headed towards Miri. After more than 1,000km, I will complete my journey in Pontianak, Indonesia.

“We love Brunei, especially the care put into its nature conservation efforts. This is why tourists and scientists from all over the world are visiting Brunei – for its pristine rainforests.”

When asked about the most interesting part of his travels in Brunei, he said, “The kindness of the people. They are interesting, and seem to be well-educated about nature and also about our project.”

But for Bussinger, the highlight of his Brunei tour was the Telamba Homestay.

“We got sponsored for accommodation, food and even a free boat ride on the Tutong River!

“The owners, Hadzid and Leney, were so kind and like parents to us! It was a real Bruneian experience, with lovely people.”

Bussinger hopes to raise USD10,000 for five different projects: the Reforestation Project, Orangutan Project, Orang Asli Project, Plastic Recycling Machine Project and Ocean Conservation. He has even set up a website to collect donations.

When asked about how he came up with the idea for the project, he replied, “While travelling the world in my caravan for more than three years, from Germany to Turkey and then to Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Laos and Cambodia, we saw a lot of environmental devastations.”

BRUNEI Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC) organised a two-session dialogue under the iUsahawan programme for over 70 entrepreneurs from new and currently operating small and medium enterprises (SMEs), at its office in Jerudong yesterday.

The dialogue saw presentations by BGC representatives on topics that included an overview of the iUsahawan programme, BGC Vendor Registration System and modules covered by the Training Programme.

Representatives from DARe (Darussalam Enterprise) were also present to brief on the capacity development programmes available for iUsahawan participants, such as courses from the Industry Business Academy and the Microbusiness Bootcamp.

An entrepreneurship development initiative by the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry (MEMI) supported by BGC, the iUsahawan programme seeks to support Rakyat Jati Business Entrepreneurs planning to or currently operating SMEs, to aid them in starting, owning and growing their business.

Launched by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the 13th National Youth Day celebration on August 1, 2018, the programme is an initiative rolled out as part of BGC’s Social Investment Strategy to realise the monarch’s vision to boost economic growth, specifically in encouraging SMEs to penetrate the regional and international markets.

“BGC has invested in supporting the nation’s efforts towards enhancing the local economy and in developing local capability and local businesses in Brunei and the dialogues session is part of an ongoing collaboration between BGC and DARe to support the iUsahawan initiative,” a press statement issued by BGC said.

In her introductory remarks during the event, BGC Contracts and Procurement Manager Pengiran Dianawaty binti Pengiran Haji Matzin said, “To be awarded with contracts, vendors should be commercially and technically competitive. They must also demonstrate commitment towards safety and business integrity at all times. Recognising that these are building blocks that are necessary, the programme intends to deliver these prerequisites, so vendors would be better equipped and able to offer quality services not just for BGC but for other operators in the industry.”

iUsahawan targets aspiring and existing Rakyat Jati business owners between 18 and 40 who have yet to earn a contract with the government or government-linked companies (GLCs) and statutory bodies.

Programme participants will receive training to start, run, and grow a business through a start-up accelerator programme as well as be invited to a competitive tender exercise for selected contracts.

Successful iUsahawan programme participants will be awarded a three-year contract (with potential extensions) and guided by experienced mentors during the duration of the contract, the press statement added.

The business areas targetted by the programme include office cleaning services and related materials, event management services and transportation services.

BGC will issue an invitation of Expression of Interest (Eol) for the above contracts today to vendors who meet the iUsahawan criteria and plans to award these tenders in the first quarter of 2019.

BSB ranked 101st in global liveability survey

BANDAR Seri Begawan (BSB) has been ranked in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) 2018 ranking of the world’s most liveable cities.

The Sultanate’s capital ranked 101st in 2016 and 2015 and was in 100th place last year.

According to the annual survey which identifies the best cities to live and work in, BSB’s ‘Bandar ku Ceria’ initiative has made the city centre a location for recreational activities every Sunday morning and helped turn it into a vibrant city, creating an image that BSB is a friendly and liveable city and capable of attracting more visitors.

The survey report highlighted the importance of keeping the city clean, saying that it is the best way to raise its status. Everyone, including owners of commercial premises, shops and business stalls, has a responsibility to ensure cleanliness in their areas, the report noted.

In the EIU ranking, Austria’s capital Vienna has beaten Melbourne to be ranked first, ending the southern Australian city’s seven-year reign.

In the Southeast Asia region, Singapore ranked 37th, followed by Kuala Lumpur in the 78th place while Bangkok came in as the world’s 98th most desirable domicile, ahead of Manila (103), Hanoi (107), Ho Chi Minh City (116), Jakarta (119) and Phnom Penh (125).

Each year 140 cities are given scores out of 100 on a range of factors such as living standards, crime, transport infrastructure, access to education and healthcare, as well as political and economic stability.

Vienna scored a near-ideal 99.1, beating Melbourne into second place with a score of 98.4. Japan’s Osaka took third place. “Those that score best tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries,” researchers said in their report.

They noted that several cities in the top 10 had relatively low population densities which fostered “a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure”.

Researchers said wealthy financial capitals such as Paris (19), London (48) and New York (57) tended to be “victims of their own success” with higher crime rates and overstretched infrastructure dampening their appeal.

EIU’s liveability rating, part of the Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, assigns scores to 140 cities based on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

“While in the past couple of years cities in Europe were affected by the spreading perceived threat of terrorism in the region, which caused heightened security measures, the past year has seen a return to normalcy,” the EIU said in a statement about the report.

“A long-running contender to the title, Vienna has succeeded in displacing Melbourne from the top spot due to increases in the Austrian capital’s stability category ratings,” it said, referring to one of the index’s five headline components.

Vienna and Melbourne scored maximum points in the healthcare, education and infrastructure categories. While Melbourne extended its lead in the culture and environment component, that was outweighed by Vienna’s improved stability ranking.

“Vienna’s many green spaces include lakes with popular beaches and vineyards with sweeping views of the capital. Public transport is cheap and efficient. In addition to the generally improved security outlook for western Europe, Vienna benefited from its low crime rate,” the survey’s editor Roxana Slavcheva said.

“One of the sub-categories that Vienna does really well in is the prevalence of petty crime, It’s proven to be one of the safest cities in Europe,” she added.

BANK Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) will add two new products to the BIBD NEXGEN universe – BIBD BizNet and QuickPay – to bolster Brunei Darussalam’s move towards a fully cashless society via seamless transactions.

The two new upgraded systems will be launched today during the TechXpo 2018 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas, said Head of BIBD Retail Banking Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Md Jaafar in a press conference held yesterday at the BIBD Head Office in the capital.

Also attending the conference was Chief Operating Officer Dr Gyorgy Ladics and Head of Corporate Banking Koh Swam Sing.

“Besides the direct benefits of going paperless such as having a documented, secured and digitised economy with cost savings and reducing dependencies on physical cash and receipts, these initiatives support strategies under Brunei Vision 2035 in promoting the national growth of entrepreneurism that will invigorate a more vibrant private sector, create more opportunities and develop greater competitive strength,” BIBD said in a statement.

“In line with the national aspirations, BIBD NEXGEN and the ecosystems powered by it will digitally connect everyone, forge alliances and create conveniences such as improving the ease of doing business, creating a more progressive and pro-business economy,” the statement added.

The BIBD BizNet banking platform app provides corporate customers along with government-linked companies in Brunei Darussalam mobile access to the BIBD BizNet web-based platform.

Launched earlier this year, BIBD BizNet is an upgrade to its previous digital Corporate Internet Banking platform that provides day-to-day accounts and payments operations support with real-time account access along with a collection of other enhanced features.

These include single security token access for Parent and Subsidiary accounts, payment approval, fund transfers and bill payments along with information such as foreign currency rates and branch/ATM locator and other services.

The new BIBD BizNet service and mobile app brings affordability and convenience to BIBD MSME account holders, supporting businesses, especially budding entrepreneurs, with better and easier financial management of their businesses while providing flexibility to their business operation.

BIBD QuickPay service, meanwhile, is the latest upgrade to the BIBD NEXGEN mobile application. The service is designed to cater to the needs of businesses, especially MSMEs, new start-ups and other budding businesses requiring transaction services but do not have the capital to invest in the latest cash register or point-of-sale machines.

The cost-friendly service builds on BIBD’s existing eTunai platform for seamless digital transactions without the need for physical terminals to accept cash and card payments to produce sales receipts.

With the three-step payment method of scan, pay and confirm, payments are made instant when BIBD customers scan, using the BIBD NEXGEN mobile application, the merchant’s designated QR code.

To be able to use the new QuickPay, BIBD NEXGEN mobile users are advised to update their app to its latest version (v 3.8.0), available both at Google Play Store and App Store.

Adding to efforts to promote financial management among entrepreneurs, BIBD also recently launched its BIBD MSME Account which only requires a minimum opening and average monthly balance of only BND50, much lower than the usual requirement imposed by other banks. The facility is specifically designed to accommodate the needs of micro, small and medium enterprises.

BIBD NEXGEN is the bank’s revolutionary mobile-led digital banking concept that harnesses the latest innovations in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics and customer insights.

BIBD recognises that the future of banking is not only digital but specifically mobile-led, especially for Brunei Darussalam where mobile penetration and interaction are the highest in the region. Banking services will be more accessible through the platforms powered by BIBD NEXGEN which will de-cash the economy through enhanced interconnectivity and multi-industry alliances, the BIBD statement noted.
