Sayf is a product that we invented. We have innovated the songkok to help people, especially students that wear songkok daily, like we do.”

Muhammad Alif explained that the inspiration behind the project came after they identified problems and tried to solve them.

He noted some of the Sayf songkok’s features. “Inside it there is microfibre to absorb sweat, and it is washable.” It was also shared that the Sayf songkok has several pockets to store money (both notes and coins) as well as a special sejadah and a sunshade attachment.

Think big, start small: Expert

LOCAL entrepreneurs and startups should think big, start small and use Brunei Darussalam as a launchpad to test and fine tune their business model and ideas to prepare to take on the regional market.

This was shared by Blue Ocean expert and CEO of UCSI Blue Ocean Strategy Consulting, Malaysia, Raj Kumar during an interview with the Bulletin on the sidelines of the Local Business Development (LBD) Workshop held in September.

Asked if he had any advice for young entrepreneurs and startups in the country, Raj highlighted the idea of thinking big, but starting small.

“You can incubate and pilot test all that you have – your concept, your business model – here, but don’t be afraid to take on Southeast Asia as a market,” he said, underlining the market opportunity of that the region’s population of 600 million offers. “I think that in itself speaks volumes.”

He noted that Brunei has a population of about 450,000. “So use Brunei as a pilot, as a test case, as a proof of concept that works. Fine-tune your business model, fine-tune your ideas, fine-tune your business, and then when you’re ready, take on the 600 million of ASEAN and I think that sounds exciting.

“We’ve got to look at it at a regional level,” he said. “So we don’t look at that country specifically, but the country is a good place to test ideas. That would be my advice. So think big, start small, grow deep and think regional, and test your ideas.”

Asked for his impression of entrepreneurship in Brunei Darussalam, he noted his experience during his three visits to the country. “What I’ve noticed, I think would divide it into the first time, second and third – this time. So the first time I saw it was very dependent on oil and gas and you could see the number of participants that came, a lot were from the oil and gas industry.

“The second one was where entrepreneurship started to develop, but even then they were a lot more senior entrepreneurs,” he continued. “What I notice this time round is that there are a lot of entrepreneurs that are young, so young entrepreneurs are emerging. This is a great sign, which means that there is a desire, or there’s a need and there’s an opportunity for younger entrepreneurs that are rising.

“It’s an exciting time where I believe that the country is already in the process of diversifying from an oil-based economy towards an entrepreneurship kind of approach,” he added.

Raj featured as a speaker at the 12th LBD Forum and also facilitated the LBD Workshop entitled ‘One-Day Blue Ocean Shift Masterclass’.

BRUNEI Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) recently completed a new onshore Darat Gas Project three months ahead of schedule.

This is a significant milestone in the further development of this mature onshore asset which has still large potential based on our current subsurface studies incorporating the latest 3D seismic results acquired recently.

The gas will be piped offshore to the AMPA09 gas processing platform and exported to Brunei LNG plant in Lumut.

“Darat Gas is expected to supply around five per cent of Brunei LNG’s feedstock in coming years – it is a major step towards growing our gas production from onshore fields,” said Darat Asset Manager Norsalina Wati binti Haji Abidin.

This project incorporates the results of the state of the art Rasau 3D Seismic Survey, acquired in 2015 to provide a good assessment of the complex geology of the field.

The project is expected to produce up to two million m3 per day of gas through a new gas processing facility located near the existing Rasau production station.

Strong coordination and meticulous preparation across teams in BSP and business partners – as well as engagements with the local community – helped make it possible to produce first gas earlier than planned.

In total around 300 BSP staff and contractors worked on the project.

“We are really grateful for the cooperation from the residents of Kampong Sungai Teraban and government agencies in Belait District who have been supportive from day one of the project but also the day to day operations in Rasau,” said Senior External Relations Advisor at the BSP Suffian Zainal.

THE Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), Ministry of Finance and Economy through the Competition and Consumer Affairs Department advised book and school supply retailers to practise responsible and ethical retailing by providing good value and moderating price of school supplies, to drive sustainable domestic consumption and business growth.

According to a press release from JPKE, the advice was given to retailers during several recent visits to bookstores, as consumers’ spending on school-age children is expected to rise in this back-to-school shopping season.

JPKE also highlighted that ethical business practice will boost domestic customers’ loyalty and retailers’ reputation.

It notes that, with less than a week before the school term begins, parents and guardians are busy doing back-to-school shopping for school supplies, with many choosing the convenience of purchasing under-one-roof, which may also include school uniforms, shoes, bags, and stationery.

“While retailers are offering convenience of shopping for parents, JPKE would like to remind parents and guardians to get value for money supplies by comparing prices and quality, and avoid overspending by managing their budget,” the press release stated.

“Consumers are reminded of their rights and responsibilities to seek clarifications from the retailers or sales representatives on prices or products if there are any doubts.

“Consumers are also advised to keep proof of purchase such as receipts in case of any required follow-up after the purchase, and also to study the terms and conditions of purchase, particularly for electronics items.

“Businesses are also reminded to display price tags clearly on items to ensure price transparency and enable parents to make choices and price comparisons.

“This is required under the Price Display Regulations, failing in this can face a penalty of not more than BND1,000 after one warning notice. While subsequent offence can be prosecuted and the offender will face a maximum fine of BND20,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.”

In conjunction with the Brunei Salebration 2018, participating businesses are encouraged to offer their best deals and creative discounts to promote shopping in Brunei.

The application provides a platform for consumers to lodge a complaint of any unethical business conduct that will be channelled directly to JPKE.
