Bintang Search stars dazzle in final concert

The top five finalists of the local online-streaming-based reality singing contest Bintang Search battled their hearts out during the final concert premiered on Sunday evening.

During the final elimination show last Saturday, five contestants – Mimi Wahab, Najrul Maznibi, Khairul Nadzri, Maya Walker and Sami Alli, who have amassed a following since their debut in the auditions were named the finalists of the contest, which its producers said has garnered over 700,000 unique views on YouTube since its premiere in June.

The final concert saw each finalist belting out three different songs of different genres – a Malay song, a ballad and an upbeat or rock number, making the evening their most nerve-wrecking and challenging feat.

With the talents giving rousing performances, three celebrity judges – singer-songwriter Fakhrul Razi, entertainment producer Nana Farhana and singer Rizal Rasid gave professional advice and mentorship.

Some of the evening’s highlight performances included Mimi Wahab’s rendition of the popular song Matahariku from Indonesian artiste Agnes Monica, where YouTube commenters applauded the vocal powerhouse’s performance that also amazed the three judges with her high notes.

Meanwhile, one of viewers’ favourites Najrul Maznibi’s performance of the pop hit from Harry Styles, Sugar High, also captured the hearts of many with his fun and energetic performance.

Mimi told the Bulletin that it has been a rollercoaster journey for her. She endured challenges that taught her about singing and life. “This is where we can polish and cultivate our singing career,” she said, adding that she has overcome her stage-fright and nervousness with the mentorship of one of the judges.

Najrul said that since the auditions stage, he has learnt so much and considers this as one of his biggest platforms in his singing career. “I am an ordinary person who wants to pursue my dreams, and Alhamdulillah, this might be where my dreams will come true,” he said.

Khairul said being in the competition has polished his vocal skills. “There were many challenges, but I always strive to give my best and Alhamdulillah, this will drive me to become a better singer.”

Sami, who was eliminated in the previous elimination round and later re-entered the competition based on judges’ votes said he never imagined being in the finals. “I did my best during the semi-finals but did not make it, and to be called back to the finals, I think it’s my luck. This platform gives me an opportunity to learn from our mentors, producers and crews that have been supportive.”

Maya, the youngest contestant in the show who sang a Malay power ballad Aku Bidadari Syurgamu by Malaysian legendary vocalist Datuk Siti Nurhaliza said she felt more comfortable with the genre, as opposed to rock.

“But at the same time most of my songs are in the slow or mid tone range and a lot of tones,” she said, adding that the song allowed her to sing her heart out.

Television and streaming services consumption spiked to the highest numbers in Brunei, due to pandemic restrictions, as home-bound Bruneians sat glued to their sets and mobile screens, engrossed in the news and local entertainment. This was boosted with increased broadband Internet penetration in the country.

Director and Programme Producer Siti Kamaluddin said this was evident with the successful first season of the Bruneian sitcom Babu-Nya produced by OOPs! Brunei along with Bintang Search, which was an instant success.

She attributed the show’s success to local youth working tirelessly behind the scenes, most are still learning the basics of show business.

“The Bintang Search has provided a platform for young directors (and production team) to learn on the job as part of their training and gain exposure,” she said.

She said the journey has been very interesting for her and the team. “It has also been a touching journey for me because it bonded us as a family,” she said.

Starting as an unknown programme, she admitted that they were not expecting much reception since it was on YouTube but with the trust from many parties including corporates that have given their support, she hopes to see more coming forward to help support art and the creative industry in Brunei, so they can come up with the second season of Bintang Search.

“We have a great future in online streaming broadcasting. The best thing with YouTube is that it is accessible from any device,” she said.

With the conclusion of the concert last Sunday, viewers can vote for their favourite contestant through www.oops-brunei.com until tomorrow at 11.59pm.

The winner, who will be determined by half of the viewers’ votes and half from the judges, will be announced during the Grand Finale Results Show this Sunday through the OOPs!
YouTube Channel.

Bintang Search is a singing-based reality show that attracted over 300 individuals to showcase their talents during a month-long audition held in June.

Wargamas, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that aims to unite all senior citizens in the country to contribute and support the development, well-being and progress of the nation, celebrated its first anniversary of establishment at the Vanda Restaurant of

Wargamas President Pengiran Haji Mohd Salleh bin Pengiran Haji Kamaluddin conveyed his appreciation to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) with the cooperation of the Ministry of Development (MoD) in giving permission to use a bungalow as Wargamas’ headquarters.

He said that the number of members in Wargamas is rising daily and has reached nearly 800.

Minister lauds Wargamas organisation partnership

The importance of unity and conformity in achieving the same objective, especially in honouring senior citizens, was highlighted by Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, as Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports during the first anniversary of the Wargamas organisation.

“As the eyes and ears of the government, it is hoped that the Wargamas will complement and support past efforts, particularly its commitment in jointly addressing current challenges such as socio-economic issues and unemployment,” he said at a celebration held at the Mulia Hotel’s Vanda Restaurant yesterday.

“The citizens and residents of this country are blessed that the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has always been solicitous towards the welfare and importance of senior citizens, as people worthy of respect and consideration.

“This is very important, as Brunei Darussalam is an ageing nation where the number of senior citizens continues to grow, comprising more than eight per cent of the country’s citizens and residents.

“The involvement of senior citizens through associations and senior citizens activity centres is an important platform for ensuring their productivity and health in jointly realising the aspirations of the Senior Citizens Action Plan.

“We very much welcome the compassion and willingness of Wargamas Association, which continues to be competent in providing views and experiences to assist the government. Towards this, we remain committed in providing more platforms for senior citizens to share their ideas, such as forums and knowledge-sharing events.”

“Despite the various platforms, there is tremendous potential for the Wargamas to work together with the Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PKWE), as an opportunity to keep active instead of being overlooked. Their merits and strengths lie in their solidarity in working together for the benefit of senior citizens across the country.

“Apart from focussing on strategic matters, it is also important for the Wargamas to continue its focus on niche matters with a specific impact on senior citizens. Topics such as health, dementia, active ageing and the importance of community in caring of senior citizens are very critical and require close cooperation to be widely disseminated and effectively addressed.

“In this respect, you can be the catalyst as strategic partners in mobilising senior citizens and accomplishing the best for senior citizens throughout the nation.

“Therefore, let us continue to move forward in uniting senior citizens. As stated during the opening ceremony of the First Annual General Meeting of the Wargamas last January, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports will continue to invite Wargamas to work together with the government, non-governmental agencies and the private sector, to ensure the accomplishment of all objectives for the Senior Citizens’ Action Plan.

“In according constant significance to senior citizens, the government will continue to provide encouragement and support for the further strengthening of cooperation, in order to shore up the efforts of the Wargamas Association towards achieving common aspirations together.”

Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Umar, Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin, President of Wargamas Pengiran Haji Mohd Salleh bin Pengiran Haji Kamaluddin and the organisation’s executive members were also present.

Brunei visitors to Singapore urged to use TraceTogether app

Azlan Othman

Visitors from Brunei Darussalam and New Zealand who successfully apply to go to Singapore will be required to use the TraceTogether app at all times while in the republic. They must also retain the app in their phone for 14 consecutive days after leaving Singapore, Straits Times reported yesterday.

This is to facilitate contact tracing should they test positive for COVID-19 during their stay in Singapore and within two weeks of their departure. Should they test positive during the period, they will be required to upload data stored on the app to the Singapore’s Ministry of Health.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) yesterday spelt out the conditions for travel to the republic, following the announcement of Singapore’s decision to unilaterally open up its borders to Brunei Darussalam and New Zealand last Friday.

However, during a press conference updating on the COVID-19 situation in Brunei Darussalam yesterday, Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar said Brunei Darussalam is not relaxing the border yet to leisure visitors. A special task force is looking into the situation.

CAAS said, instead of having to serve a quarantine period, visitors from the two countries will only need a COVID-19 test upon arrival. However, they will have to pay their own medical bills should they require treatment for the coronavirus while in Singapore.

Singapore is opening its borders to visitors from Brunei Darussalam and New Zealand. PHOTO: AFP

CAAS said the travel conditions will help to contribute to the “revival of the Singapore air hub in a safe way while minimising risks to public health”.

Interested visitors from New Zealand and Brunei can apply for an air travel pass (ATP) online from noon on September 1 for entry into Singapore on/or after September 8. The application must be done between seven and 30 calendar days prior to their intended date of entry into Singapore.

CAAS said this pass will let the authorities contact interested visitors should there be any changes to Singapore’s health and border measures. It will also help to manage the number of incoming visitors.

First, they must have spent the last 14 days in Brunei or New Zealand before flying to Singapore on direct flights without transit.

In Singapore, they will also have to take private transportation, taxi or private-hire car from the airport to a declared place of accommodation after undergoing the COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction test at the airport.

They will have to remain isolated at the accommodation until the test result is out within 48 hours. Should they test negative, the visitors will be allowed to go about their activities in Singapore.

To facilitate the process, visitors are strongly encouraged to pre-book and pay the SGD300 fee for their COVID-19 test online, and refer to the Singapore Hotel Association website for the list of hotels where accommodation is available.

CAAS added that a key priority is still the safety and well-being of passengers, air crew and airport staff, and public health in Singapore.

It added, “Given the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, the relevant authorities in Singapore may introduce new measures or requirements as and when necessary to safeguard public health.

“This may result in changes to the conditions or cancellation of the ATP at short notice. Applicants will be notified of any such changes or cancellation of their ATP.”
