Underground water boost for paddy plantation

The Underground Water Well Project at Agricultural Development Area (KKP) Lot Sengkuang is an important step in realising His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s vision in ensuring the nation’s food security, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong said.

“Having plenty of water to cultivate paddy is very important and there are challenges in acquiring large and consistent amount of water. Here in Kampong Labi, we are successful in drawing out the water that will be distributed across the paddy plantation to enable them to plant high-yield paddy twice a year, where previously it was only possible once a year,” he said.

The minister made these comments during a visit to the KKP Lot Sengkuang in Belait District to look into paddy harvesting yesterday.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali said the well will ensure that paddy plantation farmers are not just reliant on rainfall to ensure a successful harvest, adding that he also hopes that projects such as these will be conducted at other plantations to ensure an alternative and consistent source of water which can result in an increase in yield during harvest.

The delegation convened at the Bio-Diversity Centre and made their way to the rural area of Belait District with the first stop being a brief visit to the KKP Rampayoh where the Ladang Syarikat Fook Chun Farm had recently started to cultivate limau manis fruit.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali and the delegation then made their way to the nearby Underground Water Well Project at the KKP Lot Sengkuang. The site is an initiative by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) through the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood and Preston Geocem (B) Sdn Bhd where various facilities such as underground pumps and water tanks have been constructed to provide water supply to the nearby paddy plantation. The area was previously an empty field.

The construction and processes that go into the operations of the site were explained in detail to the minister following the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Mosque Affairs Officer Haji Md Nazelley bin Noorashid of Kampong Labi Mosque.

The minister was given a detailed overview of the composition that makes up the well. He was also briefed on how the water pump and sediment filtration system aids in irrigation for the nearby paddy plantation. Department of Agriculture and Agrifood Senior Special Duties Officer Saidin bin Namit briefed the minister.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali also toured the facilities in the area which included the solar panels that power the whole system, the electrical panels and water tanks that store water for use during changes in seasons. Preston Geocem (B) Sdn Bhd staff were present.

The whole Underground Water Well Project at KKP Lot Sengkuang is estimated to be capable of drawing 12m3 of water every hour which equates to 12,000 litres.

This provides the nearby paddy plantation with an alternative source of water, as the extracted and filtered ground water can be stored in the water tanks for use during sudden changes in the climate, especially during the dry season.

The minister officiated the drawing of the underground water by opening a valve that draws the groundwater to the surface.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali then toured the 20.7-hectare area designated for paddy plantation led by Pertanian Tropikal Utama (PTU) Managing Director Yong Khian Fook who is leading the paddy plantation as the head.

The minister harvested the paddy that was first planted in July as part of his visit.

As the minister drove the combine harvester around the plantation, the collected paddy was emptied into holding bags. The minister, Yong Khian Fook and members of the contingent examined the harvest.

With just under eight hectares out of the 20.7 hectares of land used for this harvest, Yong Khian Fook said the plantation is slated to continue to develop the area.

He said the next paddy planting season is planned to start around December and with the continued expansion, 12 hectares will be utilised for the next season’s paddy planting.

Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Hanapi bin Mohd Siput, who is also the Chairman of the Mukim Labi Consultative Council and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Labi 1; Belait District Officer Ramlee bin Haji Jamudin; heads of departments and senior officers from various government agencies were also present.

Fourteen individuals had their heads shaved, and four others a hair trim, yesterday as part of the PinkPop Festival’s Hair For Hope campaign held at the Ozone in Kiulap to raise awareness on breast cancer.

All proceeds from the campaign will go to the Breast Cancer Support Group and the hair turned into wigs for the survivors.

Among the donors was 41-year-old Go Lai Fong who had her head shaven for the good cause.

“I had wanted to shave my head for this campaign for five years but I always bailed out,” she said. “But I finally did it today.”

She added, “My mother-in-law passed away from leukaemia. So it’s important for me to raise public awareness on cancer and the importance of early detection to increase the chances of survival, especially with the advanced medical treatments we have today.”

On the possibility of being judged for being bald, she responded, “I’m not bothered by what people think of me. Do my looks really represent who I am? My opinion is – no. Cancer patients lose their hair due to chemotherapy, but we seldom think about how they feel. So today, I want to try and understand them.”

As a reward for her sacrifice, Go raised BND1,200 at the event from her friends and family.

In the afternoon, there were Brazilian Football Academy games and talks on the benefits of exercising, breast cancer prevention and injury prevention tips. Meanwhile, on Saturday, female bikers joined a Ladies of Harley event to raise awareness on breast cancer.

There was also a talk on female empowerment featuring breast cancer survivor Katrin, yoga instructor Daphne, Lili Yong of Lilli Lingerie and surgeon Dr Amalinda Suyoi.

Bukit Merikan Recreational Park in Kampong Tarap Bau is the latest addition to the country’s popular recreational spots, with accessible jungle tracks and some challenging uphill routes, within a short distance from the capital.

The park was officially opened yesterday in a brief opening ceremony by Village Head of Kampong Lupak Luas and Kampong Tarap Bau Haji Suhaili bin Haji Moktar, in his capacity as advisor of the organising committee.

Two vantage checkpoints on Bukit Merikan provide scenic views of Kampong Ayer and Istana Nurul Iman, while the third and highest checkpoint offers a breathtaking aerial view of the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Bridge.

To get a view of the bridge, hikers will need to conquer the final steep hill, which is also the most challenging and may require the use of the rope on the sides, for added strength while climbing to the top.

Trekking through the jungle is facilitated by man-made trails with safety rails on either side, to provide hikers with more secure footing, especially when the soil becomes wet and slippery after a rainfall.

According to Haji Suhaili, it was the residents of Kampong Tarap Bau who initiated clearing work at the hilly area to turn into a recreational spot, including the building of trails for easy and safe access into the jungle.

The opening of this new trail is hoped to provide more hiking or trekking options among fitness enthusiasts, while at the same time promoting a sense of responsibility towards nature and the environment.

Food and beverages are considered as healthier will be labelled with a Healthier Choice Logo on the menu.

At present, 14 food outlets have participated in the programme including Spoonfull Restaurant that joined the cause yesterday. Thirty-five per cent of the menu at the restaurant is considered a healthier option.

Senior Medical Officer at the MoH Dr Siti Rosemawati binti Haji Md Yussof was the guest of honour. Senior officers and officers of the MoH were also present.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in its efforts to promote health and prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) advocates ‘healthy settings’ as a platform in health promotion.

A healthy setting is a place or a social context in which people engage in daily activities where environmental, organisational and personal factors interact to affect health and well-being. One of the recommended healthy settings is food outlets.

The BFA is the first food and beverage award of its kind, aiming to promote and invigorate the growth of Brunei Darussalam’s food and beverages industry.

BFA recognises and formally awards the best dishes of local and international cuisine across the country.

The food judging activities are an integral part of the BFA where four certified judges including one special judge will evaluate and provide a score to dishes submitted by participating restaurants and eateries.

The highest score given to these dishes will determine the category winner for the Best Dish award of 2020.

The evaluation of dishes is based on the EAT Methodology standard utilised by the World Food Championships that takes into account the execution, appearance and taste of the dish.

One must undergo and pass an examination that is also set by the World Food Championships to qualify as a certified food judge.

Close to 200 eateries and over 500 dishes have been scored and evaluated around Brunei Darussalam to date while 200 more are expected to be evaluated this month before the official BFA ceremony is expected to take place in December.

The BFA in collaboration with the Brunei Association of Hotels (BAH) will host a presentation at the Setia Pahlawan Hall of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism on Thursday at 8.30pm.

The agenda includes a presentation by the Manpower Industry Steering Committee (MISC) Hospitality and Tourism sector of the Manpower Planning and Employment Council (MPEC), the setting up of the Brunei Darussalam Food and Beveraged Executives Association and a presentation on the Brunei Food Awards 2020.

Restaurants and food vendors, including those under the Village Consultative Councils (MPK) are invited to attend.

The first co-branded payment and travel cards in Brunei Darussalam, the ‘Royal Brunei Visa Credit and Debit Cards by Baiduri Bank’ is equipped with the latest in contactless payment technologies. It was officially launched by Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Economy) Dato Seri Paduka Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Baiduri Bank CEO Ti Eng Hui and RB Acting CEO Martin Aeberli.

Ti Eng Hui said, “We are very proud of this collaboration between Baiduri Bank and our national carrier, Royal Brunei Airlines (RB). “These Royal Brunei Visa Cards cater to all customer segments. Though we are unable to travel at the moment, we can already start accumulating (Royal Skies) miles by using the card for our everyday spending, so when the borders open, we will have enough miles to redeem flights for our next vacation,” he added.

Dato Seri Paduka Dr Awang Haji Abdul Manaf highlighted that RB and Baiduri Bank are two strong Bruneian companies with impressive track records of innovation, product development and community service.

He believes the launch creates the ultimate travel card in Brunei, offering a new way to earn miles on everyday spending and activities.

“I have been informed that cardholders will also be able to earn even more miles with RB purchases, as well as benefitting from a minimum of five kilogramme extra baggage allowance for credit cardholders. This new launch gives guests the chance to earn now for redemption on upgrades and flights in the future, when the time is right to travel, and current restrictions eased,” the deputy minister said.

He also said that the collaboration is just one of a number of digital innovations, partnerships and collaborations that RB has worked on over the past months while preparing and building a strong platform for travel recovery when the time is right.

Other initiatives include the migration of RB’s digital e-commerce platforms to cloud systems, a new RB travel mobile app, as well as the re-launch of RB Holidays website.

Baiduri Bank, he said, “has moved into its brand new headquarters recently, which has successfully leveraged on technological innovation to improve its customers’ experience.

Therefore, I must congratulate both RB and Baiduri Bank on these initiatives. We have seen across Brunei, the widespread adoption of digital innovation as a result of COVID-19 with customer benefits ranging from food delivery, financial services and e-commerce ordering.”

Meanwhile, the RB Acting CEO said, “This collaboration is very special for RB and as one of the leading Bruneian brands on digital innovation, it is only right that we continue to innovate, collaborate and bring better experiences to our Bruneian guests who are loyal and strong supporters of the national carrier.”

Visa Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei Kunal Chatterjee said, “We congratulate our valued partners, Baiduri Bank and RB for the launch of the co-branded travel cards. Although cross-border travel has not resumed in many countries due to the pandemic, we introduced this product to Visa cardholders so that they can start earning their miles whenever they spend on their cards.

“Once travel restrictions are lifted across the world, cardholders can redeem rewards to make flight bookings or upgrade their flights. Another benefit of the card is that it is contactless, making it easy for Visa cardholders to tap and pay at supermarkets and cafes in Brunei, or any merchant across the world that accept contactless payments.

“Our data shows that contactless payments usage is growing in Brunei, and Bruneians are embracing it as a seamless and convenient mode of payment.”

For those who love travelling, the cards come with unsurpassed perks and privileges, including fast track to earning Royal Skies miles. Cardholders will earn miles at an attractive rate through everyday spending, and twice as much when they use their card at any RB Customer Service Centre or online at www.flyRB.com.
