The Government of Singapore on Monday announced a SGD49 million Low-Carbon Energy Research Funding Initiative at the Singapore International Energy Week 2020.
The funding is set to support research, development and demonstration projects in low-carbon energy technologies such as hydrogen; and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) over the next five years.
The announcement of the multimillion funding for low-carbon energy research was made by Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing during his speech at the 13th edition of the Singapore International Energy Week.
The latest efforts by the Singaporean government aimed to accelerate the technical and economic viability of such emerging technologies to reduce Singapore’s carbon emissions, particularly emissions intensive areas such as the power and industrial sectors.
Chan Chun Sing said, “Hydrogen, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage, are promising technologies that have the potential to transform Singapore’s energy landscape and help us achieve our long-term emissions-reduction goals. This new funding initiative strengthens our current efforts, and will accelerate our transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.”
Research projects could include technologies that enable the effective capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from low-concentration emission sources in the industrial and power sectors, and to convert CO2 into useful products such as building materials, reclamation sand and synthetic fuels. Test beds for emerging technologies, such as the blending of low-carbon hydrogen with natural gas in combined cycle gas turbines, will reduce carbon emissions from electricity generation. These testbeds could yield insights in applying low carbon technologies in Singapore’s context, and facilitate future deployment.
This funding initiative is a multi-agency involving the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), the Economic Development Board (EDB), the Energy Market Authority (EMA), the National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). It will be co-driven by EDB and EMA to ensure projects are relevant to the industrial and power sectors, with A*STAR as the implementing agency on behalf of the
Singapore government.

Measures and preventive actions as well as the control of the COVID-19 in Brunei Darussalam are based on the views of medical and health professionals with the justification of Islamic law, and these are all thanks to the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
The good understanding of the public on the justification of Islamic law on the advice and regulations by health professionals has made the situation in the country go well, without stirring any strife or issues in the community.
Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman said this yesterday during an unofficial annual meeting of Religious Affairs Ministers of Brunei Darussalam, the Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia and Republic of Singapore (MABIMS).
He said, such actions are further strengthened with religious practices at the national level among the people, particularly the Muslims. This method has relieved anxiety and prevented panic in the community.
It has also raised awareness on the need to comply with guidelines and instructions to prevent/control the virus spread.

This includes the decision for the temporary closure of mosques, suraus and religious halls, Arabic and religious schools, as well as postponing the departure of Haj pilgrims this year.

His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen on Tuesday released a heartfelt message for his late brother, Al-Marhum His Royal Highness Prince Haji ‘Abdul ‘Azim, who passed away on October 24.
The heartwarming message was published on His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen’s social media account.
The message read, “It was never a dull day when my Abang Azim was around. He loved to always prank us, joke around and he never took life too seriously.
“His laughter was so contagious that regardless of whether the thing was funny or not, everyone would end up laughing too. He definitely lived to the fullest. I spent every day of my entire childhood with my brother – he taught me so much and made me who I am today and for that I am eternally grateful.
“Earlier this year, my brother was diagnosed with severe systemic vasculitis which is an auto immune disease. An auto immune disease is a condition of an abnormal immune system where antibodies attack own body tissues. At the same time, he was also coping with bipolar disorder, which made the fight harder.
File photo shows His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen with Al-Marhum His Royal Highness Prince Haji ‘Abdul ‘Azim.
“Eventually, my brother succumbed to multiple organ failure caused by persistent infections, due to the auto immune disease, which led to his passing on the morning of October 24, 2020. We wanted to share this information about these illnesses as I know this is what my brother would have wanted. He was a big advocate of bringing awareness to different causes.”
“While my family and I are all heartbroken and love him infinitely, we know that Allah loves him even more, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return,” His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen’s message read.
Al-Marhum His Royal Highness Prince Haji ‘Abdul ‘Azim passed away at the age of 38.
Al-Marhum His Royal Highness was an active advocate for persons with different abilities (including autism) as well as children diagnosed with cancers, among others.
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday received in audience outgoing High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore to Brunei Darussalam Lim Hong Huai at Istana Nurul Iman.
Lim Hong Huai presented his Letter of Credence to His Majesty on March 23, 2016.
Also present was Defence Advisor of the Republic of Singapore to Brunei Darussalam Colonel Yeo Joon Hua Desmond.
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam said Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) moral virtues form a path of light and guidance towards development.
Delivering the titah to mark Maulidur Rasul 1442 Hijrah from Istana Nurul Iman yesterday, His Majesty said that patience was one of the greatest morals that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) possessed.
“The Prophet (pbuh) was known to have great patience throughout his teenage years and adulthood, where he was constantly tested with many obstacles and resistance from his opponents. But with his enduring patience, the Prophet (pbuh) successfully built a highly revered country and Ummah,” His Majesty said.
The monarch praised the Prophet’s (pbuh) ways of developing a country, which started by building his own personality, before the rise of eminent personalities such as Sayyidina Abu Bakar, Sayyidina Omar, Sayyidina Othman, Sayyidina Ali and the other apostles.
His Majesty added that the meaning of personality-building here is acquiring noble moral values such as fairness, bravery, patience, loyalty and trustworthiness as such, which was how Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) began to build a nation, provisioned with an abundance of noble moral values.

His Majesty said this can also be correlated to the theme of this year’s Maulidur Rasul celebration, which is ‘Developing with the Moral Values of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).’ As development is constantly ongoing, His Majesty said that we should grasp on to the Prophet’s (pbuh) moral values as a guiding light, so that all of it is in the path of the religion.
Another example of the Prophet’s (pbuh) moral value, the monarch said, is the prohibition of corruption.
“If this moral value is practised firmly in a country, of course it will promise prosperity and harmony,” His Majesty said, adding that a country free of corruption is a country full of blessings that is free from bane.
His Majesty cited the Prophet’s (pbuh) other moral values, which is beneficence and trustworthy, noting that if these two values form the basis of development, it will be successful in fruition. “That’s how noble and high of the Prophet’s (pbuh) moral values.. if we or anyone possesses them, it can create a blissful world,” the monarch said.
His Majesty cited a verse in Al-Quran, from Surah Al-Anbiya Verse 107 that translates to – “We have sent you O Prophet only as a mercy for the whole world.” This is a declaration that cannot be challenged and denied, the monarch said.
Earlier in the titah, His Majesty praised the people and residents of Brunei for their patience and conforming to government directives in enduring, what His Majesty said is an “extraordinary test” of the COVID-19 pandemic that has befallen the country and the world.
“Alhamdulillah with our unity and ways to manage it, Allah the Almighty has saved us, allowing us to live our normal lives with comfort and harmony,” the monarch said.

Haji Dennie said the position and rank of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is high and special in the eye of Allah the Almighty.
Although the Prophet was a Ma`shum, protected from sins and vices, he was even promised by Allah the Almighty with the reward of heaven, but he still worshiped Allah the Almighty to a degree beyond the normal level. The Prophet did not neglect the worship of Allah but doubled it although the Prophet’s position was guaranteed as the first person to set foot in heaven.
Haji Dennie said whether in physical or spiritual development, trust and patience are among the two important morals. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) called on the people to believe in Allah the Almighty despite receiving various allegations, threats and criticisms. The Prophet was once offered property, rank and position and women to abandon his propagation and betray the trust of Allah the Almighty. However, the Prophet remained patient, firm and unmoved by pressure or offer to betray the trust of Allah the Almighty. The Prophet was a brave and courageous man and at the same time loving, gentle and forgiving.
