Employees Trust Fund (TAP) conducted the Lakastah Bersedia (Let’s Be Ready) programme from December 9-10 at Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE) Building.
Lakastah Bersedia is a comprehensive retirement planning programme highlighting the importance of planning before reaching retirement. The programme is targetted at TAP members who will retire in the next 10 to 15 years.

These were explained by speakers from Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD), Syariah Affairs Department, Health Promotion Centre, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and Baiduri Bank Berhad.
The retirement planning session highlighted the importance of identifying the participants’ needs and goals for retirement at earlier stage so that appropriate actions can be taken to ensure they will be met, which includes identifying the savings they wish to achieve to sustain their lifestyles during retirement.
Information on voluntary contribution was also shared as a way for members to increase their retirement savings in TAP or/and Supplemental Contributory Pensions (SCP) by contributing more than the mandatory rates prescribed. Voluntary contributions can be made online via Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) and Baiduri Bank where members only need to input their details when making the payment (TAP or SCP account number, and identity card number).
Also available during the programme were booths showcasing information and products related to financial planning from Baiduri Bank Berhad, Insurans Islam TAIB and Great Eastern Life Assurance Company.
This programme saw 50 participants from MoFE, including their spouses. TAP will extend the programme to other ministries in the future.

The ecosystem is in line with the whole-of-nation concept, with the involvement of the MoHA as a government agency, BIBD as the main Islamic financial institution, GLCs and the private sector, in contributing to the success of the 1K1P Transformation Programme.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) of Home Affairs Abdul Walid bin Haji Matassan said, “The 1K1P Transformation Programme 2020 is an effort and initiative of the MoHA, with the cooperation of BIBD, in providing training for entrepreneurs under the 1K1P programme.

“The first phase was held from July 27 to 30, involving 35 1K1P entrepreneurs representing their respective village consultative councils. The participants were also exposed to various management approaches in preparing their respective business plans.
“As a result of the evaluation by a panel of judges for the 1K1P Transformation Programme, 19 of the participants were selected to continue the course in phases two and three, from August to September 3.
“The 1K1P transformation has already undergone several phases. It is currently in phase four, where the ministry is introducing 1K1P classic and premium products to the market.”
The 1K1P classic and premium products are on sale for two days only, at the BIBD Heritage Branch at Pekan Bangar. Today, they will go on sale from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 6pm.

The State Mufti’s Office at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) launched two new titles – Dirgahayu Raja Kita and its translation ‘Long Live Our King’ yesterday.
State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the author, attended the launch.
The book contains a special State Mufti interview with Radio Television Brunei (RTB) in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 73rd birthday, and a special talk in conjunction with the monarch 74th birthday.
The book also depicts His Majesty’s concern for the welfare of the people across various aspects, including administration, security, economy, education and charities.
According to the State Mufti, it is not prohibited to mention virtue in the form of a person’s good deeds and pious acts. In certain circumstances, when such deeds are mentioned, it can bring intercession or help to the person who owns the charity.

Therefore, it is of great benefit to list the monarch’s charitable deeds, because they have the status of leadership and a role model to emulate. Charity is very much loved by Allah the Almighty, and Allah the Almighty commands that every blessing be mentioned always, he said.
As the world faces the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Sultanate not spared, the State Mufti said the monarch expresses concerns over all matters related to the pandemic. The ruler provides encouragement and guidance in facing the health crisis.
The book also discusses how His Majesty strongly emphasises that supplications and Al-Quran be used in fighting the pandemic.
Among others, His Majesty in a titah said, “I would like to recommend that we all practise reading Surah Yaasiin and other surahs in Al-Quran, because the Surah has many benefits for our safety in this world and the hereafter. Insya Allah, thanks to the practice, COVID-19 will leave us and the country.“
“This is where the advantages of our ruler as the supreme leader of this country are reflected. The monarch’s care for the welfare of his people cannot be measured, and is continuous,” said the State Mufti.
Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar commended Pengkalan Batu Health Centre on its second accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI), with the Gold Seal of Approval Award for standards of basic healthcare.
During a Doa Kesyukuran ceremony at the Pengkalan Batu Health Centre yesterday, Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham expressed hope that the accreditation would serve as a benchmark and incentive for government health centres and hospitals, in striving to provide safe and high-quality health services.
“Therefore, it is hoped that the Pengkalan Batu Health Centre will be able to share its experiences and knowledge with other health centres, on the process of achieving this accreditation,” he said.
He added, “In 2017, the Pengkalan Batu Health Centre was accredited by the JCI, also making it the first government health centre in Brunei Darussalam to be recognised. To maintain the standards of the facility and to ensure safety and quality of treatment is always given priority, JCI will renew its recognition every three years.
“On November 13, 2020, the Pengkalan Batu Health Centre underwent another evaluation process. In the process of achieving JCI accreditation, I understand there are 158 standards that need to be adhered to, which are comprehensive and covering all aspects of health services.

“These include patient safety, community involvement, clinical procedures, patient clinical outcomes, medicine use and management, infection prevention and control, quality improvement, staff education and competencies, as well as health and safety facilities management.
“All these aspects have been evaluated by JCI, and Alhamdulillah, this health centre has successfully met the required standards. The achievement of the JCI accreditation is also in line with the mission of the Ministry of Health (MoH), which is to provide high-quality, comprehensive, effective, efficient, responsive, fair and easily accessible healthcare system for all in the country.”
Earlier, Acting Director of Health Services at the MoH Dr Hajah Rafidah binti Haji Gharif delivered a speech, in the presence of Permanent Secretary at the MoH Haji Abdul Manap bin Othman and Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Management) at the MoH Haji Maswadi bin Haji Mohsin as well as officers and staff from the ministry.
JCI is a world-renowned organisation that recognises accreditation for international health facilities which prioritise patient safety and provide high-quality healthcare.
JCI accreditation is a gold standard for health facilities, where obtaining the recognition means that an institution has successfully undergone a strict evaluation process and met performance standards, in addition to high eligibility criteria in relation to the safety and quality of treatment.
The accreditation also indicates the dedication of an institution in improving the quality and safety of healthcare. Undergoing the JCI accreditation assessment is intended to foster a culture of safety and quality in basic care centres, while also providing assurance that the employed standards, processes and training are at the highest international benchmark.

“Through this summit, we aim to provide a platform for the youth to learn from outstanding young role models locally and abroad, as well as providing an opportunity to network, learn and interact with local industry players.”

As they say, the future is made up of people who are here now, and Insya Allah, all of you are the present and the future of this country. This summit hopes to encourage everyone to start taking action now because we do not need to wait to hold a certain position or land a certain job to start making our mark.”
The BIBD Youth Empowerment Summit, he explained “falls under the pillar of education and is a strong testament of how we view education as vital to the nation’s progress and success. Another prime example of our commitment in this area is the BIBD Advocating Life-Long Learning for Aspiring Future (ALAF) initiative which has been our mainstay programme since its introduction in 2013”.
BIBD ALAF’s primary programme provides financing and academic support for exemplary students to pursue their studies in notable schools, institutions and universities both locally and overseas. To date, 240 students have been given such opportunities. In addition, BIBD ALAF also conducts and supports capacity building programmes, including equipping students with coding, robotics and other ICT-related skills, the minister said.
“These initiatives will realise BIBD’s goal in helping to groom the youth of Brunei by giving everyone equal opportunities to excel in various fields of expertise regardless of their background. This will directly align with the future needs and requirements of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and ultimately help create better job matching and reduce unemployment in the country,” Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew said.

In 2014, Hengyi Industries established the joint chemical and process engineering scholarship programme with UBD and Zhejiang University allowing UBD students to continue their studies at Zhejiang University.

The virtual presence of the speakers allowed students to view the topics they approached through a global lens.
The summit also had 27 breakout sessions adopting a more proactive approach on learning, with on-site classes that gave students a fresher perspective through topics such as Arts, Career, Technology and Fitness.
Some of the breakout sessions were conducted in locations such as Tasek Lama, where participants connected with nature; Jab Gym and Fitness Zone, and students got the chance to explore the unique sides of fitness, and even explored their creative sides at Laksamana College of Business, Mahakarya Institute of Arts Asia and Relentless Academy of Performing Arts.
BIBD YES! is the first summit of its kind in Brunei Darussalam that combines physical and virtual participation by speakers and delegates. It was simultaneously broadcast to 24 different schools to hundreds of students, with more than 300 students physically attending at the JIS Arts Centre.
The summit is a testament to the community’s demonstration of support, commitment and solidarity in rooting for the success of the future generation. This is demonstrated by the 37 different partners and supporters for the event, comprising of government departments, private sector sponsors, personal benefactors as well as other supporting organisations.
“I challenge you to create a different set of opportunities for you and your peers, beyond what is currently available, rather than just waiting for a comfortable job, or a corporate ladder to climb,” His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen said in his sabda at the opening ceremony of the two-day BIBD Youth Empowerment Summit (YES!) yesterday.
The opening ceremony at Jerudong International School (JIS) Arts Centre was attended by some 300 youth participants from 32 schools nationwide.
His Royal Highness also said, “I strongly believe that our youth can build new corporations which will be future engines of our society.”
The youth, with their vibrant energy and fresh perspectives can contribute vitality and creativity to emerging social and economic challenges that Brunei face, he said.
His Royal Highness also pointed out, “We are already seeing youth-led organisations come up with ideas and solutions to tackle issues such as public transport, food security, sustainable energy, and more. These young people should be recognised for the work they are doing to create real change in our society – change that will make an impact not just today, but also to help us deal with the challenges of the future.”
His Royal Highness in his sabda touched on COVID-19 and its impacts worldwide including Brunei Darussalam: “We have before us the COVID-19 pandemic, with its devastating impact on the global community, and our community here in Brunei Darussalam. Businesses, jobs, and our personal well-being have all been affected by this crisis.”

“With 71 million coronavirus cases and 1.6 million deaths around the world, we must all be grateful to the government for containing the virus effectively and at the same time address the wider consequences of this pandemic. Businesses have had to shut down and schools suspended, leading to socio-economic disruptions of current structures and demanding us to consider how best to operate in this new normal.”
His Royal Highness added, “As latest figures from the government show that the national unemployment rate stands at 6.8 per cent, and youth unemployment at 21.3 per cent, there is no doubt our youth face a future marked by greater sense of uncertainty. Yet I am heartened to see that youth were at the forefront of volunteering to help people during these times of need – from distributing food supplies to healthcare workers and to raising funds for our communities.
“However, this spirit of identifying the needs in the community is only the beginning, working hard to fill the gap is what will set you apart when you leave school or graduate from college. The results you obtain and the certificates you receive will not be as significant as working for a greater purpose that you are passionate about.”
His Royal Highness added, “I, myself was not a brilliant student but I found my passion in the army, serving my country. We need to realise that the challenges of our generation face will not be the same as before. Therefore, we also need to be adaptable and resilient.”
His Royal Highness recalled, “When I was 18 years old, I was sent to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK, where I was pushed to my limits time and time again. Often, I thought I could not take it anymore – but I learned not to give up in trying times. I recall one very formative experience – I had to complete a 73-kilometre group race in the black mountains of Wales, all while carrying a 20-kilogramme backpack. Generally, this takes between 24 and 35 hours to complete, with hardly any rest. The terrain was so unforgiving that I developed a cramp within the first hour, and I did not know how much longer I could go on.
“But despite the intense pain, I just focussed on putting one foot in front of the other. And in the end, after a gruelling 23 hours and 11 minutes, my group and I finished in first place. This showed me how powerful the mind is, even when the body feels like giving up.
“What this experience, and what being in the military has taught me, is that we need to constantly push ourselves and not be afraid of challenges. Because pressing on and fighting through hardships will only build our resilience and character. This pandemic and its lingering effects will put our youth’s resilience to the test. Jobs that you may have wanted when you were younger may not be there in the future.”
His Royal Highness also said,”I would like to applaud the government for implementing programmes to re-train and up-skill the youth, such as the i-Ready apprenticeships and SkillsPlus.”
“I encourage you to explore these initiatives, to expose yourselves to new industries and build new skill sets, constantly improving yourselves.”
His Royal Highness added, “We want to develop new industries that will future-proof our economy. One example is investing into our creative industries. This was an issue close to my late brother’s heart. Globally, the creative industries employ more people aged 15 to 29 than any other sector.
“There are a lot of young people in Brunei Darussalam who are passionate about the arts, who have started their own creative agencies, production companies and more. They have moved beyond the usual path and out of their comfort zone to make a change. I want to encourage the youth to approach the stakeholders in this room with your ideas, in the creative industries or beyond. And together, create an ecosystem that is sustainable; one that creates quality job opportunities – and achieves social and economic progress.”
His Royal Highness added, “With that, I wish for you all to have a productive and successful summit, and that there will be outcomes that pave the way for the youth to become pioneers in the continued development of Brunei Darussalam.”
