THE spouse of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was yesterday treated to the sights and sounds of Kampong Ayer.
Upon arrival Nguyen Thi Hien and a delegation from Vietnam were greeted by Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong and spouse, Datin Paduka Hajah Jahrah binti Haji Mohamad.
Also welcoming them were the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof; deputy permanent secretary, Acting Brunei Muara District Officer as well as their respective spouses and senior officials.
The Vietnamese entourage first visited the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery, where they were briefed on the history and background of Kampong Ayer as well as the economic and social development of the residents.
During the tour, Nguyen signed on a parchment and later visited the residence of Haji Ahmad bin Haji Bujang, Village Head of Kampong Lorong Sikuna.
His house is among the 64 houses that are included under the Kampong Ayer Upgrading Pilot Project, which covers an open area of six villages in Mukim Saba as well as several areas in Mukim Sungai Kebun.
During the visit, the Vietnamese delegation took a closer look at various cultural performances, sampled Brunei traditional kueh and learnt how to make ambuyat.
Before enjoying a river cruise along the Brunei River, Nguyen witnessed a ‘Malam Berbedak’, a Malay Traditional wedding custom.
