A fire broke out at a house in Jalan Kianggeh yesterday, leaving a Malaysian Chinese elderly couple homeless, but unscathed.
Ishraqi bin Haji Sidup from the Bandar Seri Begawan Fire Station led a team of 13 fire and rescue personnel to the scene at 6.09pm. The police helped control the traffic flow near Jubilee Hotel.
Residents from the nearby apartment helped the elderly couple retrieve important documents such as identification cards.
The 73-year occupant, who had been renting the house for 45 years, said that others (possibly squatters) had been living around their compound, where he believes the fire might have started.
“I came out of the house and saw a big fire in the backyard. I told my wife to grab our clothing and important documents and we fled,” he added.
The swift spreading fire ravaged the entire house. The Fire and Rescue Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
