Twenty students with different abilities from Pusat Bahagia participated in planting 40 seedlings of Tabebuia Rosea and Casuarina Nobilis trees at Taman Riadah, Jalan Menteri Besar last Saturday.

The activity was organised by seven officers from the 30th Executive Development Programme for Middle Management Officers (EDPMMO) ongoing at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), in collaboration with the Peoples with Different Abilities (OKU) Section under the Community Development Department (JAPEM), Forestry Department at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), and Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) at the Ministry of Development.

Acting Director of Forestry at the MPRT Noralinda binti Haji Ibrahim and Community Development Officer as Acting Head of Persons with Different Abilities Division (BOKU) under JAPEM at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Irnawati binti Haji Mahir were also present.

As part of the Community Outreach Programme of the 30th EDPMMO, the activity highlighted OKUs’ contributions towards the environment and forest sustainability, and supports Brunei Darussalam’s Climate Change Mitigation Efforts. It is hoped to raise public awareness on the role of OKU as members of the community able to contribute to the country.

The Community Outreach Project is one of 30th EDPMMO’s requirements where participants carry out activities to address the challenges faced by the community. Within two weeks allocated for Community Outreach Project, several 30th EDPMMO officers focussed on OKU’s welfare and well-being, and carried out research identifying aspects for improvement in managing the affairs related to OKU.

Persons with different abilities in the country have been given attention and support by the Government of Brunei Darussalam to safeguard and maintain their well-being.

The 30th EDPMMO participants involved are of the opinion that opportunities must be provided for OKU as active members of the community to contribute for the country’s benefit such as th tree-planting activity.

The Acting Head of BOKU under JAPEM said such an activity is a simple project with a big impact on the OKU, especially their involvement in society.
