His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) stressed on the need for graduates to maintain their integrity and faith when faced with challenges.

In his titah delivered at the 32nd UBD Convocation Ceremony yesterday, His Majesty said, “It is my hope that all graduates will continue to cultivate their adaptability and independence in the current world situation.

“Aside from that, they should always maintain their integrity and hold firm to the teachings of Islam when faced with challenges, so that their endeavours may be blessed by Allah the Almighty.”

Earlier, the monarch referred to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as a “blessing in disguise (hikmah) which prompted the application of increasingly rapid digital technology. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has also contributed to the government’s efforts in curbing the spread of the outbreak.”

His Majesty said, “In this regard, I am pleased to note that UBD has updated its Computer Science programme and introduced a Bachelor of Digital Science with an emphasis on courses such as AI, Robotics Data Science and Cyber Security. It is my recommendation that UBD’s digital initiatives should be aligned with and uphold the Digital Economy Master Plan 2025, which was introduced this year. Regarding innovation initiatives, I would suggest that the research conducted at UBD be sensitive to the changes in various facets of the landscape.

“I was informed that UBD is embarking on a study of Smart Farming, with the use of advanced technology; and Personalised Medicine, in which medical treatment is based on the person’s genetic information.

“All of these are really good for boosting competitiveness. It is my hope that all will proceed according to plan and achieve success.

“On the subject of competitiveness, I wish to congratulate UBD in being listed on the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for the first time. In respect of the QS World University Rankings, I was made to understand that UBD was included among the the one per cent of the world’s top universities.”

After congratulating the new graduates, His Majesty said, “I wish to take this opportunity to thank the entire populace of UBD, which includes its Council and Senate Members, Vice-Chancellor, executive officers, academic personnel, officers and staff members. May they receive manifold blessings for their contributions and services.”
