Exhibition celebrates Islamic art, heritage

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) organised an Exhibition, Calligraphy Art Workshop, Islamic Art Paintings and Sales in conjunction with the International Day of Islamic Art, at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Islamic Arts Calligraphy Centre yesterday.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin officiated the ceremony.

The event is aimed at commemorating Bandar Seri Begawan as the 2019 Asian Capital of Islamic Culture and celebrate the art of Islamic culture and the values of daily life based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy while appreciating diversity and highlighting the Islamic heritage.

Projects and activities have been outlined to commemorate and celebrate Bandar Seri Begawan as the 2019 Asian Capital of Islamic Culture, including initiatives involving government ministries and departments, private sector, associations and individuals to raise awareness on Islam and its civilisation in the Sultanate.

The Islamic Calligraphy Exhibition and Workshop also focusses on a combination of Islamic calligraphy and contemporary illustrative paintings highlighting talent and enhancing the creativity and quality of Islamic artwork produced by the local community.

Artists will be introduced to Islamic calligraphy, while khat Jawi calligraphers exposed to contemporary art. It is hoped that the combination of calligraphy and painting activists will contribute to the advancement of art, especially Islamic art in the country.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak in her capacity as Acting Managing Director of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, permanent and deputy permanent secretaries at the MCYS, high commissioners, ambassadors and representatives were also present.

The International Islamic Art Day is an initiative towards implementing the Resolution of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
